FFA In 1984 the River Valley Chapter of the Future Farmers of America had 63 members. Many activities have been carried out this year that have been helpful to the community and the learning process. During the football season we ran the foodstand. We also delivered the government commodities to the distribution spots in our area. We were chosen to be on an FFA talk show on WPPQ radio in Baraboo. The Chapter officers were interviewed. To understand farming better, we plan to take a field trip to the forage research station in Prairie du Sac. We are also taking part in dairy judgin and speech contests. Our main goal in FFA is to make the youth of today the agricultural leaders of tomorrow. FRENCH CLUB French Club is an organization that allows students to use and explore the foreign language. Students have the opportunity to sample foods and have a better understanding of a different culture. The year was started off by sponsoring the homecoming lunch and selling candy for fund raising. An exciting event that took place this year was the field trip to the folk fair in Milwaukee. Students were able to see cultural displays and taste food samples from many different areas. French classes have made it possible for interested students to travel to France. The two and a half week trip includes a six-day stay at a French family’s home. The rest of the time is spent sight-seeing the area around Paris. A group will be leaving this spring. This should prove to be a good experience for students who plan on studying the language and students who enjoy traveling. In April, a trip was planned to Chicago to visit the art museum. This year, for the first time, students were able to attend an evening meal prepared by Prairie Land Cafe. MATH CLUB The Math Club is an organization made up of people interested in mathematics. The main goal of this club is to promote mathematics and show how useful it is. The club raised money by selling pop, candy, and chips at athletic events and also after school. The money raised was used for scholarships for seniors planning to further their education in mathematics or a field related to mathematics. The math club was also involved in area math contests. Members of the National Honor Society are chosen by all faculty members. Qualifications that must be met to be chosen are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. NEWSPAPER STAFF This year the interest to be on the newspaper staff seemed to decrease and the staff was rather small. Each member realized this and knew they had to work a little bit harder on each article. This year, again, the computer was used to help speed up the process and it gave the paper a nice easy-to-read appearance. The newspaper’s name, THE BRIDGE, represents its purpose - to line and “bridge” the communication gap between the students, parents, and teachers. There are many types of articles in every issue that can satisfy the interests of various school organizations, history of special holidays, various surveys and, of course, the ever-popular eye spies. This year during graduation a special issue of THE BRIDGE was presented to the graduating seniors. This issue was dedicated to the Class of 1984 and it contained such things as prophecies, wills, song dedications, awards for good and bad characteristics and various photographs of the graduating seniors. This final issue has always been favored by those who read it. Sue Thering ROW 1: Chris Berry, Paulette Nelson, Mike Curran, Theresa Meyer, Mary Miller, Dwayne Zila, Doug Zila. In Spanish Club, the members are given a chance to sample new foods, visit exhibits, and learn about people with different cultural backgrounds. Some of the activities this year have been: a visit to the annual Folk Fair in Milwaukee, a Spanish supper prepared for us at the Prairieland Cafe, and the sampling of Mexican cuisine at Chi Chi’s in Madison. As a fund raiser, the Spanish Club continued its tradition of selling carnations on Valentine’s Day. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is made up of members from the sohomore, junior, and senior classes. When you are elected to be on the Student Council, your acceptance means you will serve as a member until you graduate from high school. This year the council sponsored a talent show at the time of Homecoming. They also arranged an assembly for Mr. Pratt and presented him with a plaque for his dedication and hard work. Each year the council would like to get more involved. The Student Council is still part of the Student Assistance Program. They are not responsible for the work, but try to stay involved by donating money to the SAP. VICA CLUB The Vocational Industrial Clubs of America are designed for those students who are enrolled in vocational classes. There are 14 members in the club this year, and this will be the fifth year the VICA club has been organized at River Valley High School. Each year the club members do different activities to earn money for a scholarship, which will be awarded to a graduate who is going to attend vocational school or college and major in the vocational field. This year the club members sold concessions at the Boys’ home basketball games. They also construct projects to sell and plan to cut firewood as they done in the past. Some of the firewood is sold while some of it is donated to the Arena Manor and to others who need it. The club also went on a field trip this spring and attended a competition at Platteville in April. VICA members competed against others by using their knowledge and skills in different vocational areas. This was the first year that the VICA club constructed a float for the Homecoming Parade. He has dedicated his life, his time, and his efforts to help make River Valley what it is today. Mr. Pratt had many jobs at River Valley. He was an administrative assistant, the political science and economic theory teacher, the head advisor of the senior class, and the head advisor for forensics. We thank Mr. Pratt for his dedication and wish him the best of luck always. He has left many memories for us and we will remember and treasure them forever. This was his day as he received awards from Dr. Turner (superintendent of schools) and Ann Mueller (representing the student council). He directed the Jazz Band, listened to Shawn Roberts (alumnus) speak and Heidi Schoenmann sing, and watched a skit in which Eric Drachenberg played the part of “Mr. Pratt.” Let the pictures tell the story of this enjoyable day. 70 71 Dennis Gilbertson’s animal received a 1st- Diane Eberle’9 animal received a 2nd-place Ralph Nachreiner tries to control his place award. award. very affectionate Holstein.
