THE HAWK Prepared by the River Valley Annual Staff River Valley High School Spring Green, Wisconsin DEDICATION EDWARD V. HOCH Mr. Hoch has been River Valley's only Superintendent since its founding in 1960. He played a very important role in the consolidation of the school district and his efforts have made River Valley known throughout the state. Mr. Hoch came to River Valley from Big Foot Union High School in Walworth where he had been chief school district administrator since 1958. Prior to that, he was superintendent of Sharon Public Schools from 1952 until 1958. When he came to River Valley he brought with him many years of valuable exper- ience. Mr. Hoch s dedication and determination should be incentives for all of us to follow. We thank you Mr. Hoch for the major role that you have played in making River Valley Number 1 . 2 DEDICATION Eulalia Fargen Mrs. Fargen was a teacher at River Valley since 1968. Before that she taught at var- ious country schools taking time out to raise a family. She has served as Head of the Special Education Department and was also an active class advisor. Mrs. Fargen was very dedicated to her job, to her fellow tachers, and to her stu- dents. She was a very gracious and gener- ous person who will be greatly missed at River Valley High School. We thank you for all you have done and wish you the best of luck in your retire- ment. Lewis Schmidt Mr. Schmidt was Head of the Music De- partment and the only band director in the history of River Valley High School. His ambition and dedication built a music pro- gram that is known throughout Wisconsin and even nationwide. He had a reputation of making students work for the best and not settle for less. Numerous honors, awards, and achieve- ments filled his years here and will always be a part of River Valley's memories. We thank you and wish you the very best of luck in your new position at Lake- land College. 3 RIVER VALLEY Peanuts, popcorn, wa- Hoppy's new acrobatic ter bottles, tape ... move! cornet The River Valley School Board attends to serious business for the district. FRENCH CLUB French Club continues to grow year after year. Students now realize how important a foreign language is and how useful it can be in the future. This year the club started off by sponsoring the homecoming luncheon and joining the Spanish Club for a picnic. The club took two field trips. One was a day in Milwaukee at the folk fair, and the other was spent in Chicago. We sold books and also had a few bake sales. The highlight of the 1981-1982 school year was when some of the members tried out their knowledge of the foreign language by spending a week in Canada during Easter vacation. The trip was a great success and memories of that once-in-a-lifetime week will last forever. Members of National Honor Society are chosen by all faculty members. Qualifications that must be met to be chosen are scholar- ship, service, leadership, and character. This year's banquet was held at Arthur's Restaurant. At the banquet, six new members were inductd into NHS. Our guest speaker, Mike Manning, added finishing touches to the program to make the night a total success. Tne main project this year was to raise money for the replacement of the school letters in front of the nigh school building. We hope this project will be completed next year. NEWSPAPER STAFF The newspaper, The Bridge , is a paper that tries to let the students, teachers, and parents know what is happening at River Valley High School. The staff includes writers, typists, and artists. Some members do a little of each. This year's staff was very big and that meant for a variety of articles. Each issue was centered around a holiday or special event such as Homecoming. In each issue you were likely to find student comments, an editorial, the top ten, a movie review, update on sports, poems, short stories, and the ever famous eye spies . The history of the holiday was also included to remind us of the true meaning and origin. The seniors also published a special issue of The Bridge for graduation. It contained pictures, feature stories, and senior plans and opinions. Hopefully each issue of The Bridge was pleasing and satisfying to all who read it. SPANISH CLUB The River Valley High School Spanish Club was organized to give students an opportu- nity to experience different cultures. In Spanish Club, members are given the opportunity to sample new foods, visit exhibits, and learn about people with different cultural back- grounds. Some of the activities sponsored by the Spanish Club were: the annual French-Spanish picnic held in September; the trip to Milwaukee to attend the folk Fair in November; making Christmas pinatas and enjoying them in December; and the sampling of Spanish cuisine at Chi Chi's in Madison. STUDENT SENATE The members of the River Valley High School Student Senate have established this as their River Valley High School Student Senate Constitution: In order to experience the democratic process, to give students more of a voice in school matters, to share in the responsibility to the community in which they live, to promote better communications between all levels of the school, and to provide for total involvement in school activities. The Student Senate consists of students who are elected by their classmates. If a student is faced with a problem or an idea, he or she can go to a student senate representative and they can bring up the issue at the next meeting, and may even bring it up to the faculty or administration. Projects that involved the Student Senate this year were taking care of the pop machine, giving Homecoming mums to the teachers and secretaries, going on a field trip to Platte- ville for a conference for Student Senates, giving all senior citizens free passes to go to all athletic events, and also the annual Junior Olympics which is held every year. VICA There are twenty-five members in our River Valley Vocational Industrial Club of America. There are close to 2,000,000 members in VICA clubs throughout the nation. The VICA club has been going strong for three years now. In the past, the VICA club has had the shop open at night for those who wanted to learn how to use the tools. During Christmas vacation the club chopped wood and donated it to the senior citizens and those who needed it. They have received alot of thanks for this and plan to do it in the coming years because of its success. This year the club was selling refreshments at all boys home basketball games. They have raised enough money for a scholarship which will be given to a graduate who wants to go on to vocational school. They also want to earn enough money to go on a field trip at the end of this year. The club participates in the state VICA contest that offers different activities. The main activities are auto mechanics, welding, carpentry, parliamentary procedures, and job inter- views. This year the contest is April 30th and May 1st in Waukesha. The winners in each OFFICERS Carla Carmody Treasurer Lori Nachreiner Vice President Wynn Anderson President Carrie Hess Secretary activity will go on to a national contest. 68 WORK STUDY PROGRAM CINDY BROOKS worked at GREENWAY MANOR. In preparation for the Work Study Program, the students must meet certain criteria. They must do the academic work in an acceptable manner and to the best of their ability., A sincere effort must be made to learn the responsibilities of a good worker and then put into practical use what has been learned. Good behavior and good attendance are vital require- ments. These good habits will be reflected on the job. The students fill out an application form to be accepted by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation — State of Wisconsin, as a client. After acceptance by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation they go to their family doctor for a physical. When the students are seniors a job will be found with a willing and supportive employer. The employer agrees to take the student and give him or her training on the iob, two hours a day for eight months of the school year. The student will be paid wages for the work. Employers are reimbursed by the Division of Rehabilitation for the wages paid to the student. In addition to the wages, students earn two credits toward graduation. The students of River Valley are fortunate to live in a caring community which is helpful in providing positions in which the students gain work experience while in school. This cooperation with the Work Study Program has enabled students to become self-supporting and productive citizens. VIRGIL HOLTSLAW worked at UNION 76. JERRY GLASER worked at WOODY'S. When the play-offs began in 1976, all conference champions were considered for the play-offs, but only four would get a play-off berth. In 1981 all conference champions were in the play-offs. River Valley was co-champion of the S.W.A.L. Conference with Prairie du Chien but since River Valley beat Prairie during the season, the Blackhawks earned a spot in the play-offs. In the quarter finals of the play-offs. River Valley hosted the Cuba City Cubans who belong to a tough Southern Eight Conference. The game featured two tough defenses, this being shown in a scoreless first half. Cuba City scored first in the third quarter, but River Valley took control of the game after this. The final outcome was River Valley 16, Cuba City 14. This was one of River Valley's biggest victories. This qualified River Valley for the semi-final game against the Deforest Norskies at Monona Grove High School. The game matched one of the better offenses in the state against one of the tougher defenses. The Blackhawks started out fast, scoring on their first drive; but, after that, it was all Deforest. The final score was Deforest 27, River Valley 6. The hopes of a Division IV State Championship had disappeared but with the winning tradition of football at River Valley, there's bound to be another state play-off team. CONGRATULATIONS!
