THE HAWK 1980 Annual Staff, River Valley High School, Spring Green, Wisconsin DEDICATION WE, THE RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL STAFF, WISH TO DEDI- CATE THE 1980 ANNUAL TO TWO FINE TEACHERS WHO ARE LEAVING US AT THE END OF THIS YEAR. BARB TESSMER Barb has been a teacher at River Valley for the past ten years. She has also served as Head of the English Department. In the ten years she has spent teaching at River Valley, she has also been an active class advisor, chess club advisor, and forensics coach. Barb was a very dedicated English teach- er and was interested in providing her stu- dents with a good perspective and solid background in the English language. She had a reputation among the students as be- ing a tough teacher, but all of the students that had her for an English class appreciate how much they really learned and realize what a good teacher she was. PAULINE HOCKING Pauline has been a teacher in the River Valley system since its origin in 1960. She was Head of the Art Department and advi- sor of the booster club. She organized the many art shows at the high school in which her students displayed their art work. She also showed student art work at the West Towne Art Shows in Madison. Pauline helped many students interested in art to improve and enjoy their own tal- ents. She may be credited with the fact that many of her students are continuing in an art-related field in college. We want to wish her the best of luck in her retirement. 2 MR. HOCH HONORED Nordeen Gilbertson presented the plaque to Mr. Hoch. The honors came in recogni- tion of Mr. Hoch’s 20 years of service to the River Valley School District as its only superintendent since its founding in 1960. Mr. Hoch received letters of commendation from the state superintendent of public instruction, Barbara Thompson, and from the executive director of the Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators. The plaque presented to Mr. Hoch on behalf of the River Valley School District read: In his pursuit of quality and equality of education opportunities, Edward Hoch made a unique contribution through his leadership and outstanding performance, given so freely during the years of our district consolidation. KATHLEEN LINS HONORED The River Valley High School Staff and student body presented Kathleen Lins with a plaque and service award proclaiming the district’s appreciation of her long years of office service in the high school. Mike De- drick made the presentation on behalf of the school. Mrs. Lins has been with the school district since October 15, 1953 - serv- ing first in the old Spring Green High School and then in the River Valley High School following consolidation. The plaque read: In appreciation of your many years of dedicated service to the River Valley District and Community - January, 1980.” Mrs. Kathleen Lins receives a kiss and a plaque from Student Council President, Mike Dedrick. Mr. Michael Manning, High School Princi- pal, and Mrs. Kathleen Lins admire her plaque in front of a large birthday banner from the students and faculty. 4 One of the couples had some problems in Joe Wiest heads for class. ATHLETIC CLUB From the initial meeting of the club, the numbers of its allegiance were few, but the spirits of those present were ready to get the ball rolling. With Mr. Showen again the official advisor for the club, the first-day elections rolled along very smoothly. The club’s first fund-raising project came through the sale of plastic River Valley Black hawk cups. With 10,000 cups sitting in Mr. Showen’s office, many still need to be sold. Another fund- raiser for the club, was the sale of River Valley Blackhawk football jerseys. This sale was quite success ful. The club has not been quite as active this year as it has been in the past, with the scheduling of meetings very difficult to appropriate to everyone’s schedule. The willingness to help the school and community is always present in the attitude of those who share the common title, “Athletic Club Member’’! BOOSTER CLUB The Booster Club is an organization open to everyone. Its main purpose is to promote school spirit and create an interest in the activities of our teams. “Spirit” is defined as an enthusiastic loyalty. The spirit of River Valley is one of distinction among the S. W. A. L. Conference. By being a member of the River Valley Booster Club, a student demonstrates this loyalty through locker decoration, posters, and attendance at the various athletic games. A minimum of ten posters is required from a member. Posters are one of the most important ways of producing spirit in our school. Members take a lot of time and effort to make each poster unique. By putting posters up around our school, our goal is to inform students when games are and to get them more interested in attending. With this year’s membership being the largest ever, more things were done to achieve this goal. A project that was finally completed this year was the conference mascots. Members of the Booster Club finished painting them and the Athletic Club put them up. It is a nice addition to the gym. At the beginning of the year, signs were made to stick in the dessert at noon hour and to cover glasses. This was done in an effort to maintain a large attendance at the very important games held that night. Candy bars were sold as a means of raising money. This money was used to buy more supplies. But this year, the club had a new twist, due to the new French teacher, Ms. Laurie Lavine. The officers, with the help of Ms. Lavine, tried some new fund raisers this year. We sold posters which went over pretty good and we used this money for renting a French film from Madison. This movie was shown in the Little Theatre and free crepes were distributed afterwards. For a second fund-raiser, we decided to try selling small, decorative lamps. This was a disaster and we abandoned the idea soon after starting. The club then went back to its old stand-by; selling M M's. With the money raised the senior French club members went to eat at a French restaurant in Madison. Singling out the fourth-year class has become somewhat of a tradition. It is not necessary to be in any math course during the year in order to be a member. The club finances its activities by selling concessions at boys' and girls’ athletic events. Meetings are held at least once a month to discuss upcoming events. This year we had a guest speaker and went on a field trip to Milwaukee. The club is organized to better the student’s participation in mathematics and to inform him of all of the uses of math in today’s society. To become a member, the student must maintain a grade point average of 12.0 for sophomores, 11.0 for juniors, and 10.0 for seniors. A selection committee consisting of faculty members chooses the new National Honor Society members each year. During the 1979-80 school year, the National Honor Society invited the Green Bay Packers to play a basketball game against the River Valley Alumni All-Stars. Profits from the game went to the senior citizens. The Society had its banquet at Arthur’s Restaurant. At the banquet the new members were officially inducted into NHS. The River Valley High School Newspaper, “The Bridge” tries to “bridge the gap between students, parents, teachers, and administrators. The staff this year was rather small but this did not affect the variety or quality of the articles. Each issue was centered around a special event or holiday. The year began with a Homecoming Edition and ended with the Easter Edition of “The Bridge”. Each issue started out with an editorial dealing with a subject that would hopefully make the reader more aware of what was happening in the world. The edi toral was followed by articles about school happenings, club activities, and a background on the history of each holiday. The history was to inform and remind the readers of the mean- ing of each holiday. “The Bridge” also had a lot of creative writing. We were lucky to have a staff that was very talented in creative writing. Each issue had a comical story and also some poetry. Along with these regular columns, the ever-popu- lar “Eye Spies” and Horoscopes” were also found in every issue. “The Bridge” also contained some special features such as student opinions and comments. 70 ROW 1: Dawn Armstrong, Jackie Carmody, Kim Baker. SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club is an organization that welcomes all students with one or more years of Spanish. The club promotes an interest in the cultures and traditions of Spanish-speaking coun- tries. A picnic with the French Club got the year off to a great start. The annual Christmas party was a fun experience as we made Spanish foods and played Spanish games. The Spanish Club has sold Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pop Drops to make money for plans to have an area Spanish meal. T-shirts were also sold to Spanish Club members. OFFICERS Lisa Ruhland Secretary-Treasurer Joyce Sprecher President Kathy Stoltz Vice President 71 STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council consists of students who are elected by their classmates. Their task is working together to help and improve the entire student body. This organization is the link between the student body and the administration. If a student is faced with a problem or an idea, he or she can relate this to a council member who will then bring it up for discussion at a meeting and may even bring it up to the faculty or administration. This year’s Student Council had many old and new projects, such as a Word Encounters Day, which was a spelling bee given to students who signed up for it. The active participants were asked to get sponsors for this and all the money that was raised went to the Multiple Sclerosis Fund. The Student Council also decorated the cafeteria during Christmas time and donated a Stereo System to the school. A dance was held to raise money for the stereo which turned out to be a big success. A student-teacher rap session took place after the first semester where problems and new ideas were brought up concerning the student body and the faculty. There also was the 5th Annual Junior Olympics which included students and town members in various stunts and races which was fun for everyone. Our employers provide the student with working situations that they will benefit from when they go out into the competitive work world. They are helping the students to become happy, self- supporting citizens. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation reimburses the employer for the wages paid to the student but the employers are not reimbursed for the time and effort spent on the students. Several students have been offered jobs at the work stations after they have graduated from high school. The Work Study Program provides the student with on the job training. To be in the program the student must be in attendance at school the first half of the day involved in academic work. The student has a preparatory program for one and one half years before going to work. Juniors may go out to work the second semester if they have met classroom requirements. The require- ments are: academic, attendance, and behavior. Seniors work for a full year. They work for two hours each day school is in session. The student receives two credits towards graduation for each full year in the program.
