The River Valley Annual Staff helps to make this wish come true. The Staff is formed by students interested in putting together a book of high school activities, organizations, athletics, names, faces, and memories. Each of these divisions involve pictures, write-ups, and designing to form a page in The HAWK . Activities of the staff included obtaining sponsors, selling annuals, and, of course, roughing out and designing the pages for the annual. This year, to help with the financial payments, the annual staff sold ice cream after school each day. The members of the staff hope you enjoy the 1979 HAWK as much as they enjoyed making it for you. ANNUAL STAFF Much hard work from many people was necessary to make this year's annual a success. The Annual Staff' would like to use this space to recognize those people. BOOSTER CLUB Sports play a large role in River Valley as well as every other high school. Behind every sport, there are fans. These fans combine to lift the spirits of the athletes in as many ways as possible. One such way is to be a member of the River Valley Booster Club. The club is the largest in the school and their main activity is making posters. A poster of power, determination, victory, good luck, or thankfulness is displayed throughout the entire year. Each poster has its own color and originality which really adds to the atmosphere of the school. A poster relates to the students and athletes, as well as to the faculty and parents of the River Valley Community. This year the club worked on a project which many people have felt was needed for quite a long time. It was decid- ed that the gym should have some kind of symbols representing the other schools in the SWAL Conference. The de- signs representing each of the other schools in the conference were taken from the SWAL sports supplement. These comical mascots were drawn onto the plywood, cut out by the industrial arts classes, and then painted by the booster club members. River Valley's own hawk was cut from the large painting of it which has hung in the gym for several years. The plaques were then hung on the gym walls with the hawk directly above the stage. These plaques will add to the gym greatly and will also be an added project for future Booster Clubs. They may enhance each by placing an identification plate below it. Although projects such as the one carried out this year will keep the Booster Club busy, the club will never cease to support events of all sorts and never cease its main activity - TO BOOST THE SPIRIT OF RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL. FRENCH CLUB French Club had quite an exciting year. They did many things including unusual fund raisers, a trip to Chicago and Madison, and the big French-Madrigal Dinner. The French-Madrigal Dinner was the first big event of the year. It was held at the Spring Green Restaurant. French Club supplied the men and the waitresses - both turned out to be excellent. There was even a little music from the French Club supplied by record players. After the Madrigal Dinner, French Club went on a money-making spurt. They tried selling crepes after school a few times but that didn't seem to go over very well so they switched to selling M M's. In January, Ms. Wyman took a group of fourth year French Club members to the Elvehmn Art Center in Madison and to go eat at the Baker's Room on State Street. A little longer trip came later with the trip to Chicago to the Art Museum. The students also enjoyed a brief shopping spree at Watertower Place where they also ate lunch. French Club members like to eat! All in all it was quite a fun year. 60 OFFICERS Marie Burns President Julie Richard Vice President Jane Dolan Secretary-Treasurer ROW 1: Rickey Wiest, Tim Palmer, Peter Crook, Vic Stapleton, Jean Munz, Kallen Schwartz, Todd Ehlert. FFA The Future Farmers of America is an organization formed for the purpose of involving interested students in farming and agriculture. This organization was very active this year and they completed many projects. A sign was donated to the high school and placed on the outer grounds to welcome everyone to River Valley. The club also donated a picnic table to Greenway Manor. Other activities included a trip to the Chevrolet plant in Janesville which proved to be a very exciting experience. The future farmers also sent a dairy cattle judging team to Platteville and it was rated in the top ten. One other activity of importance included a corn planting project. The students planted their own corn and the profit from harvesting will be given to any student wishing to continue their education in agricul- ture. OFFICERS Dale Richards President Vincent Murphy Advisor Joe Prem Vice President 61 NEW MEMBERS - Janet Yanke, Jean Louis, Laura Frank, Jeanne Tennant, Sonya Gilbertson, Lisa Olson, Tim Young. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an organization formed to promote education and leadership in our school. Members of the society are chosen by a faculty committee on the basis of scholarship, character, their participation in school and community activities, and leadership. The student must hold a grade point average of 4.0 as a sophomore, 3.75 as a junior, and 3.5 as a senior to be eligible for consideration by the faculty committee. This year's honor society started the year by initiating the new members with the usual ceremony at the Spring Green Restaurant. The banquet was enjoyed by guests and parents of the members as was the speech given by Gary Wegner. The organization held its first annual NHS Conference Meeting here at River Valley. A spaghetti dinner was held at Rock's Round Barn to raise money for a growing curtain fund for the use of others in future years Other ideas, such as sending letters to graduated NHS members to gather information on life out of school, and making a wooden plaque to display the school song in the gym, were brought up and planned out to be continued the following year. This is the first year that females have officially been allowed into the club. Thus, the name has been changed to the Letter Persons' Club. It no longer has a President but Co- Presidents - one male and one female. The club is financed mainly by selling candy and refreshments at various athietic events. The Letter Persons' Club is dedicated to the unioni- zation of River Valley athletes to promote the improvement of River Valley High Schooi athletics. 63 ROW 1: Mary Kraemer, Kathy Kraemer, Paula Warmus, Mary Meixelsperger, Pat Layton, Chris Murphy, Jim Pol- cyn, Dan Layton, Theresa Weldner, Rose Kraemer. The Math Club sold popcorn, candy, and pop qat the Girls' Volleyball and Basketball Games to raise money to finance the trip. The club raised enough money to take a Tri-State Bus to Chicago. NEWSPAPER STAFF The River Valley High School Newspaper, The Bridge , is a publication that tries to bridge the gap between students, parents, teachers, and administrators. Although the staff this year was not as large as those of previous years, we were still able to have a wide variety of articles to interest every ready in some way. Each issue started out with an editorial dealing with a subject that would hopefully make the reader more aware of what is going on in the world today. Club news, articles about River Valley, students with special accomplishments, and sports, along with regular columns such as the notorious Eye Spy , horoscopes, movie reviews, fiction stories, and Fanny , were also found in every issue. Special features such as student polls or teacher evaluations also ap- peared in some editions of The Bridge . The final issue of The Bridge was a tribute to the graduating class of 1979. It contained articles about the vale- dictorian and salutatorian, prophecies, wills, song dedications, awards for good or unusual characteristcs, and photo- graphs of many members of the class. This edition was made available to students, relatives, faculty members, and administrators at graduation and hopefully has left a lasting impression of the Class of '79. SPANISH CLUB We opened the year with a joint picnic with the French Club. Tacos and French crepes were served and finished off in record time! Later, some members took part in a soccer game while others enjoyed a quiet game of lawn darts. Our plans for the year include a visit to see Jose Molina and his Spanish dancers who are coming to Madison on No- vember 1st, a Christmas party, and a visit to Folklore Village. We also hope to attend the annual play produced by the Spanish Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and go on a visit to sample some of the gastronom- ic delights of a Mexican or Peruvian restaurant. STRATEGY CLUB The Strategy Club could call the 1978-79 school year a transition year since we were trying to expand to other strategy games than just chess. The individuals who attended were enthusiastic, but our numbers were too few to even hold tournaments. We did introduce a new game to many individuals - the challenge of Othello, and we do feel that many community members enjoyed playing Chess, Othello, and Score Four at the Open House. We hope our numbers will grow next year! Mike and Carl concentrate on the game as Jim watch- es. Dennis watches Jim and Pete play a game of Othello. 74 SEATED: Dan Bodendein, Dan Murphy, Marty Loy, Jerry Jennings. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council consists of self-nominated students representing each class working as a governing unit for the entire student body. Your student body members from each class are elected as council members along with the vice presidents of each class. This organization is the link between the student body and the administration. Any suggestion or idea which a student may have can be related to a council member, discussed at a meeting, and pre- sented to the faculty and the administration to be decided upon. The Council holds its meetings during school hours on an average of once every three weeks depending upon the need at that time. Committees are formed to perform duties needed for events to be sponsored by the Student Council. The vice presidents on the Council form a standing dance committee with the senior vice president serving as the chairman. This year's Council consisted of only 13 members with only two elected from the sophomore class. Many old and new projects were sponsored throughout the year including a Christmas hall decorating contest, the 4th annual Ju- nior Olympics, a computer dance held with Richland Center, a disco dance at River dale along with Boscobel, a campus clean-up day, and a teacher rap session. A new project this year which turned out to be a great success was Slave Day. We held an auction at the end of the school day with Carl Frederickson as the auctioneer. All of the stu- dent council members were auctioned off one by one to a large crowd of enthusiastic bidders. Prices ranged from $2 to $24 and the Council made a profit of $102. The following day each member went with their owner to follow his every wish (without breaking the rules). Student Council members were involved in such tasks as cleaning lockers, carrying books, washing both cars and windows, sweeping floors, scrubbing beakers and tubas, and even standing on chairs and singing the school song. All in all the day was full of fun for everyone. A STATE CHAMPION On Saturday, February 24, 1979, Dennis Limmex became River Valley's first State Wrestling Champion. He battled his way through a field of 374 varsity wrestlers in a sport where the class system was non-existent. Dennis finished the season with a 35-1 record, 18 pins, and 204Vi? team points. He won championships in the Rich- land Center, Badger State and Sauk-Prairie Invitationals. The Blackhawk junior claimed titles at the S. W. A. L., Sub-Regional, Regional, Sectional, and State Tournament levels defeating everyone he met up to the state finals by a major decision or more. Dennis Limmex waits for Janesville Parker's Keith Gay to come out of his shell during the 155 pound State Finals. Limmex, who had beaten Gay 10-2 at the Sectionals, was forced to settle for a 2-2, 1-1 0. T. Referee's decision to claim the 155 pound state championship.
