ANNUAL STAFF The annual staff's main goal is to publish a book of memories for our student body. The annual staff has worked throughout the school year compiling pictures of the year's activities in order to give you a yearbook covering the events for the school year 1977- 1978. The staff sells ads and subscriptions to cover most of the cost of the yearbook - approximately $5,000. Much time, effort, and work has gone into the production of this book - our hope is that you will enjoy it. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club was a small but active group this year, meeting every week and holding a tournament at the end of the year. The addition of a three dimensional chess set cre- ated a challenge for the experts. Groans of frustration echoed from Room 24 when a player realized that a piece he wasn't watching on another level had checked his king. This expansion from regular chess motivated members to try other strategy games. Panzer Blitz and related war games became popular tests of skill with the club. Be- cause of this interest, next year the chess club will change its name to Strategy Club and will include war games as a regular part of its agenda and tournament schedule. 55 ROW 1: PAULINE HOCKING (Advisor), Jean Louis, Barb Hackl, Judy Brickl, Cindy Nach- reiner, Carol Dolan, Connie Emshoff, Wanda Anderson, Laura Frank, Janet Crook, Ju- lie Richard. BOOSTER CLUB The purpose of Booster Club is just like its name - to boost and to promote River Valley activities. Making posters and other decorations and attending events are the chief pur- poses of the club. Members receive points for making spirit-raising posters, attending sport activities, and being a member of pep band, a manager, or a cheerleader. At the end of the year, the officers tally up the points and awards are given to members that scored in the high percentage bracket. During the course of the 1977-78 school year, the Booster Club had numerous activities. To raise money the members sold candy and buttons. The buttons were designed by the members and had the slogan, This is the year of the Hawks. A special project Booster Club tackled this year was Victory Hall. It began with the winter sports season. Every- time an athletic team won a game, the members made a poster. Since our halls are equipped with visible rafters, the posters were secured to them. Each poster included the opponents name and the score. At the bottom it had a slogan such as Keep Up the Good Work , Hope to See You at State , etc. At one time, the River Valley halls con- tained over 40 posters. FFA The FFA started out this year by sending two officers to Kansas City, Missouri to attend the fiftieth annual FFA Convention. Randy Deli and Jesse Gilbertson went to see different judging teams, the best farmers in the nation, and the swearing in of the new National FFA Officers. The River Valley FFA Chapter went to Tri-State Breeders Association in Westby. The members saw new techniques in breeding of herds and also some of the best bulls in the nation. We plan on touring the Allis-Chalmers Agricultural Plant in West Al- lis in the spring. We will see how the different types of agricultural machinery are man- ufactured. We collected Christmas trees for a project. We took the trees to the school forest and build a wildlife refuge. We made a nature trail in the forest to be completed within the next few years. The chapter is also planning to get different judging teams for area contests, such as: crop judging, soil and land judging, and also dairy milk judging. We are involved in fund raising activities like selling popcorn and we donated $25 to muscular dystrophy, and $50 to the March of Dimes. Local merchants and Greenway Manor all received large calendars presented by the FFA. FHA Future Homemakers of America is a nonprofit, national organization of home economics students in junior and senior high schools in the United States. Our overall objective is to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living. Our main objective this year was to rebuild our Chapter and we have by increasing our members and planning more activities. We started the year with a well-built treasury, so the members traveled to Menomonie to tour the U. W. at Stout and stayed as over- night guests on campus. Also, while in that area, we toured the Betty Crocker Kitchens in Minnesota. On December 22, we went caroling in Spring Green and later gathered back at school in the Home Economics room for tacos and the exchanging of gifts between members. We also presented Ms. Leque and the Chapter Mothers with their Christmas presents. Some service-fun projects this year included bake sales, dinner and movies in Madison, making wall hangings for the Greenway Manor residents, a trip to the Swiss Mills in New Glarus and a Mother-Daughter Banquet on May 11 at Rocks Round Barn. We also sold a variety of Better Homes and Gardens Cookbooks. Why join FHA? Because, we are gals working together on projects that reflect youth con- cerns. We promote an appreciation for the role of homemaker. We emphasize, now as youth, the importance of worthy home membership. We strive for good home and family life for all. We encourage democracy and creative leadership in our own home and in community life. We encourage wholesome individual and group recreation. We further interest in home economics, home-economics careers, and related occupations. As a result, we gain poise, achieve a sense of worth, gain experience in making sound deci- sions , and we learn to work together toward common goals. FRENCH CLUB A touch of France at River Valley? You bet! This has always been the jubilant response of the growing numbers of French Club members. This year has been no exception. First semester, the club sponsored the Homecoming Luncheon - a financial success, but certainly not in the same gastronomic league as the French Madrigal Dinner held at the Spring Green Restaurant in December. This elegant gala offered an eight-course French dinner served by the most amiable waitresses in the area (our French club members) and was highlighted by Renaissance songs sung by the Madrigal Choir. A memorable evening indeed. Later in December the French club also went to Madison to see a real ballet - The Nut- cracker Suite and held their traditional Christmas party. Making crepes with ham and cheese made this year's party very enjoyable. The coming of Spring planted field trip ideas in the members' heads, and off we were to Madison again to see the Boston Reperatory Theater do St. Exuperys classic. The Little Prince. The day was delightful for those who went. The year ended with a presentation by each class of slapstick skits and good food. Isn't it true that in the River Valley High School French Club as in France, good food also com- pliments a good time. Most of the club members had never worked in a library before so they soon discovered that there was a lot more work in running a library than checking materials in and out for students. Club members helped discard old library books, process new books, compile bibliographies and prepare mag- azines and newspapers for student use. The club also planned the New Books parties held in September and April for the purpose of acquainting the faculty with the new books purchased for the library. Paperbook books were sold as a service project for the students at River Valley High School and as a money-raising activity for the club. Social activities included a laugh- filled Christmas party at which paperback books were exchanged and an end-of-the-year picnic. NHS The National Honor Society is a club that encourages education and activities in the com- munity and promotes leadership and good character qualities. To become a member, a student must keep a certain grade point average. For sopho- mores, you must keep a 4.00 average; for juniors, a 3.75 average; and for seniors, a 3.50 average. A faculty group then selects the students they feel qualify in the other three areas of community activity, leadership, and character. Throughout the 1977-78 school year, the main goal of the NHS was to raise money for a new stage curtain for the high school gym. Since the club did not have a large member- ship at the beginning of the year, the new members were chosen early so that more peo- ple could work on raising money. The annual banquet was also held early with Mr. Lewis Schmidt as the featured speaker. To raise money for the new stage curtain, the organization had car washes, sold cor- sages for Mother’s day and had a raffle. The raffle was the biggest project which dealt with the members making the quilt and then raffling it off. It was a big success. Also, other clubs in the school made donations to the curtain fund . The end of the year was perhaps the best. To see the new stage curtain was a dream come true to the members of National Honor Society. It is hoped that the new curtain is appreciated and will last for many years to come. OFFICERS Lisa Thering Vice President Mary Murphy President Carol Hausladen Treasurer Carol Ringelstetter Historian Julie Hutter Secretary 63 NEWSPAPER STAFF LEATHERING, EDITOR The River Valley High School Newspaper, The Bridge , is a paper that tries to bridge the gap between the students and their parents. This year's staff was very big and thus we had the chance to expand our newspaper into more areas. Creative writings, news stories, feature stories, and opinions can be found in the Blackhawk paper. If a person would open up the River Valley paper the first thing they would see would be the editorial. Following this would be issues dealing with the State and the Nation. The middle section of the paper contains the comical sections like Eye Spy . Club news fol- lowed. The final section represented the sports and also included the ever popular Fanny . During graduation a special issue of The Bridge was presented to the graduating Sen- iors. It was totally dedicated to the Class of '78 and contained feature stories about the valedictorian and salutatorian. Besides feature stories, it told of the seniors' plans for the future and asked their opinions of River Valley. This edition also contained photo- graphs of students and activities. The special issue of The Bridge ended the year on a very good note. ROW 1: Karen Ring, Mary Kraemer, Jean Louis, Connie Emshoff, Denise Eno, Laura Frank, Julie Richard. RV ATHLETIC CLUB The Athletic Club is an association of male and female athletes who have met the re- quirements for a letter on the varsity level. This year, for the first time, the club voted to involve female varsity letter winners in the club, showing that the guys in River Val- ley are not chauvanistic. This is an excellent opportunity for the girls to lend a helping hand toward the promotion of River Valley's improving athletic department. Funding of the club comes from activities and events carried out by the club's members. In the past year, the club has participated in such activities as selling refreshments and snacks at all sporting events, selling letter jackets to varsity letter winners, and selling River Valley Blackhawk sweaters. The Athletic Club consists of approximately 30 members with Mr. Showen as the club's advisor. The club is organized for the promotion and improvement of RVHS athletics, which seem to be getting better and becoming more important as the years progress. SPANISH CLUB In Spanish Club, the promoting of the culture and language of Spanish speaking countries is the main interest. This year Spanish Club enjoyed a very large enrollment. With such a large group, the club enjoyed doing many things together. Before Christmas the club sold such items as posters and other trinkets to raise money. Also before Christmas, the Spanish Club had their annual Christmas party. The group celebrated Christmas by making Spanish food and playing Spanish games. The favorite was trying to break the pinata. The highlight of the year was taking a day off from school and going to Madison to hear a special concert. The concert dealt with the flair and romance of the Spanish music. 66 OFFICERS SEATED: Tom Kinder President Laura Alt Treasurer Tom Limmex Secretary STANDING: Deanna Runyan Committee Chairperson Teresa Baker Committee Chairperson Cheryl Stoltz Vice President SEATED: Mike Dedrick, Dan Bodendein, Cindy Murphy, Rich Roberts, Amie Feiner, Luann Lins. STUDENT COUNCIL The River Valley High School Student Council is the governing body of the students. This organization consists of four elected members and the vice president of each class. The council's main objective is to represent the student body and to better communications between the students, faculty, and community. The '77-'78 projects which the Student Council has tackled are numerous. The group or- ganized a fund-raising drive for a needy local family, distributed free athletic passes to those 65 and over, contributed money to the Presidential Classroom and stage-curtain funds, sponsored a very successful 3rd Annual Junior Olympics, and for the second year held a computer dance. The council also, for the first time in the history of the school, took part in an exchange program with the Richland Center Student Council. The groups visited each other's school and participated in council meetings. The program was very worthwhile and hopefully it will help both schools develop better communications. Thirty-two students have been given training in the program. The program enables a student to meet aca- demic requirements in the morning and go to a work station in the afternoon. The student receives 2 credits toward graduation each full year in the program. Juniors go out the second semester and the seniors the full year. If the student does not meet the require- ments he cannot go out on Work Study. The students on Work Study learn what the work world is like. They have work exper- iences and learn to make personal adjustments. This will help them to be better workers when they go out into the work world. They will be able to take a good reference with them providing they have performed well at the station. River Valley is fortunate to have cooperative individuals and business people. The coo- peration of these people is very important to the Work Study Program. It needs work sta- tions. Without the stations, the Work Study Program could not operate. To be selected, you must have taken a required number of social studies courses, received no lower than a B in the classes, and held a major office in some activity or organization. The studen-. must also have shown interest in politics and government. Throughout the week the students are kept on their toes with seminars and tours. They listened to such distinguished speakers as an aide to President Carter and an Egyptian Ambassador. They saw Teddy Kennedy, Robert Dole, Walter Mondale, etc. The Presi- dential Classroom taught the students many facts and expanded their knowledge concern- ing the United States Government. Later, the floats were brought to the high school parking lot so that the entire faculty and student body could see them. The theme of the Junior float was No Peace on the Prairie Tonight The theme of the Sophomore float was Like Rocky, R. V. is 'Gonna Fly Now' 81 In the Bob for Apples , the seniors were victorious.
