After getting off to a slow start, Chess Club flourished, and once again it became an active school organization. Our small numbers this year made it possible for each person to play everyone else, the best two of three, with the person with the best record receiving a trophy. This differs from the way it has traditionally been done. Previous- ly, members would categorize themselves Beginners, Intermediate, or Advanced chess players, and after one loss, a player was eliminated from further competition. Chess club, however, is not totally dominated by the playing of chess; the club put on a skit for theChristmas program, as well. It wasn't tremendously successful, but we tried. We also had a Christmas party and are planning a tournament chess supper to end the year. In need of financial backing, chess club has sponsored bake sales during the year to finance the purchase of our trophies. If we ever have money left over, perhaps we will purchase new chess sets for the club. ROW 1: James Polcyn, Mike Johnson, Glen Bahr, Kevin Schwartz, Mike Bahr. FHA The year began with the regular recruiting of members into each club, and FHA was not to be excluded from this annual ordeal. Posters were made by Sandy Ruhland and Linda K - and distributed throughout the Senior and Junior High Schools. We entered the new year with a nice sum of money in our treasury so money-making activities were not too ex- tensive. We did have some bake sales, lollipop sales, and taffy-apple sales. On December 21 we went carolling in the Village of Plain. It was a bitter cold evening and we welcomed any opportunity to get inside one of the nice warm homes. People were very generous and seemed to appreciate our Christmas carols. After making our way around Plain, we were invited to Mary Ruhland's house for hot chocolate. There we presented Miss Leque with her Christmas present. We also held a St. Patrick's Day Contest at River Valley High School. The magic word was green and whoever wore the most received a cash prize. First place and $7.00 went to Karen Ring, second place and $5.00 went to Tammy Crook, and third place and $3.00 went to Marie Burns. Other activities for the year included a trip to the Betty Crocker Kitchens in Minnesota, the annual Mother- Daughter Banquet, and a trip to New Glarus. An all-time high enrollment of nearly 50 members lis- tened to Peggy Lord, a RVHS alumnus, talk about her experiences as an English teacher in France. Her humorous anecdotes and insights about French culture kindled the club's imagination — visions of a summer trip to France or Quebec ... The club's next activity was in fact a trip - but to Dodgeville! There we had an overnight trip to Folk- lore Village where we learned French games, songs, and danced and chatted until the small hours of the morning. The club is also planning a Mardi Gras festival - a French gala PAR EXCELLENCE in the spring, as well as a tradi- tional French Christmas dinner and program for members and parents. The enthusiasm in the club is abundant and ideas flow under the apt leadership of Kathy Limmex, Connie Horswell, and Jill Nachreiner. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club got off to a very successful but hectic beginning this year as it prepared for and hosted the an- nual Teachers' Tea. The club members served refreshments as the faculty browsed through the numerous displays of new books. Afterwards the members happily took care of cleaning up any leftover refreshments. The tea was re- peated in the spring to acquaint the faculty with the new materials acquired during the year. The mostly experienced club members assisted the librarian greatly this year and served the school by their hard work in the library, although club members don't have to work as library aides to be in the club. There were social and learning opportunities too. A Christmas party was held, complete with games and refreshments, plus, once again the members had their annual awards dinner in May at a local restaurant. Each member got part of his dinner paid for by the club and received a pin. During the monthly meetings the club decorated the library for the various sea- sons, learned more about library skills, discussed books, sponsored a paperback sale and swap and had special after school programs on various topics which were open to the entire student body and faculty. NEWSPAPER STAFF For the second time in two years, the BRIDGE has taken on a new look. This year, with the help of their advisor, Mr. Wegner, and their final -draft typist, Mrs. O'Brien, the students can carry out all phases of production necessary in publishing the BRIDGE. The staff writes, types, draws, designs, and makes electronic stencils of every article and picture which is printed. In addition to this, each paper must be folded and distrubited. As long as it was a year for change, several regular features were added to the BRIDGE. Among these are Aloy- sious and Laverne , a column where people may seek solutions to their problems; The Knights Review, a contro- versial column written AT the reader, who in turn receives an opportunity to reply to the author; and an astrology section, devoted to the sign of the month. With the new features, the old stand-bys - eye spy , Fanny , and games - were retained. One of the goals of these regular features is to involve the reader in the newspaper. The final - biggest and hopefully most exciting - issue of the BRIDGE was a tribute to the graduating Seniors. This issue was made available to parents, relatives, and friends of the Seniors on graduation night as well as to the student body and faculty. This year the BRIDGE staff was truly dedicated to their cause and it is hoped that the tra- dition set forth by them will continue. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is the governing body of the students. It is the channel through which a student can voice his or her opinion and it can be the door through which better internal improvements can be reached. These ideas, and marry more are the objectives of the River Valley Student Council. The Council consists of fifteen members - five from each class. Four of these members are regular members and the fifth is also the vice president of their respective class. The vice presidents are expected to go back to their classes and report the happenings of the Council, thus keeping an open channel of communication between the Council and the classes. Various committees inside the Council consists of Publicity, Money Making, Constitution and Election Commit- tees. All of these committees are designed to keep the present Council moving smoothly and to get the future Coun- cils off on the right track. The plans of the '76-'77 Student Council consisted of going to out of town leadership workshops and Student Council conventions, various money making projects, a pre-Christmas Vacation activity, noon hour volleyball tour- naments, the 2nd Annual Jr. Olympics and Clean Up Campus Day. With all of these events and more, the year could hardly help but be a huge success. The student has a preparatory program for one year before going to a work station. Units based on the World of Work are studied. Work-texts, filmstrips, TV, cassettes, and transparencies are some of the audio-visual aids used when studying the units. The Work Study Program provides the student with on the job training. There are many aspects to this training, namely: working under a boss, getting along with co-workers, learning the job well, punching the time clock and punctuality, following orders, neatness and correct attire for the job, and handling a pay check. While out on the job the student must be in attendance at school the first half of the day involved in academic work. Most students are out on the job two years if funds are available from the state for employer reimbursement The number of students out on Work Study will vary from year to year. This year there are three. I try to find jobs for the students as close to the school as possible, in the village or the outlying area. The em- ployers have been very cooperative. It takes a great deal of time and patience for an employer to provide a work station for the students. We are fortunate to be in an area with cooperative employers. They are designed to provide ex- posure to the three branches of government as well as the news media and the private sector. The speakers for these seminars were distinguished members of the Washington Community. Often during the week the seminars were held on location enabling the students to get a feel for the character of the institution being studied.
