3 River Valley High School Spring Green, Wisconsin IN MEMORI AN EDGAR L. OBMA 1911-1976 PHOTOGRAPHER FRIEND Photos courtesy of Dexter Haney This is the way Mr. Obma looked to many of our graduates as he took their senior pictures. The portraits of Bishop O'Connor, Frank Lloyd Wright, and John Fitzgerald Kennedy shown on the page at the left are the work of photographer EDGAR L. OBMA. Mr. Obma operated a one-man studio in Dodgeville, Wiscon- sin for 34 years along with the assistance of his wife Betty. His pictures have won top awards in professional com- petitions. His hobby of visiting the art galleries of America and Europe brought him both stimulation and pleasure and widened his approach to portraiture in the areas of church, state, industry, and education. Mr. Obma was a creative artist whose camera captured not only a likeness, but also a personality. He was a life member of the W. P. P. A. , the Professional Photographers of America, the Darlot Society of America, and a member of several other professional groups in the United States and Great Britain. He was bom August 27, 1911 and passed away Jan- uary 31, 1976 at the age of 64. In appreciation of all the time and work he donated to our annuals since the beg- inning of our school in 1962, the River Valley Annual Staff wishes to publish this 1976 annual as a memorial to him. The students displayed their work in the rotunda of the capitol building, at the Department of Public Instruction, and at the West Towne Shopp- ing Maul during Youth Art Month in March. The students help in community projects such as Special Effects for tne community theater play, Skin of Your Teeth , presented in February at the Card Theater. The Club sponsors a show of student work at the end of the school year. They also exhibit in various business places during the school year. They had a field trip to Chicago's Art Institute and the Museum of Contemporary Art. This is an active club striving to make art an enrichment program. CHESS CLUB Chess Club had quite a few members this year. One good thing about the club is that anyone can join, whether he knows a lot about playing chess or whether he knows very little. As in last year's club, members were divided up according to their knowledge of the game. There were three categories: beginners, intermediates, and advanced. After this separation was accomplished, tournaments in each category were set up. The chess club raised money this year by bake sales. The money was needed to purchase trophies for each division. It is hoped that chess club will maintain a large membership in future years. DRAMA CLUB The Drama Club was set up for the purpose of helping students become familiar with various short plays and with speaking and acting before a group. Although our group was small this year, we did have fun reading plays during club meetings, and we did generate interest in forensics. The majority of our club members attempted forensics for the first time. Since time was limited, the Drama Club did not perform any plays before a group, but the members are hoping for bigger and better accomplishments next year. Some of the activities that the FFA participated in included FOOD FOR AMERICA which involved the presentation of how food comes from the farm and the process it goes through to the consumer. This was presented to the elementary students throughout the school district. Another activity was B.O.A.C. (Building Our American Communities) in which we presented to the school board a proposal of making a nature trail throughout the school forest. The board approved and the trail is to be completed by June 1. Participation among members in the FFA contests was greater this year also. We had a dairy judging team, a farm management team, and two members participated in the public speaking contest. We sold popcorn at football games and donated some money to the band for their trip to Washington D.C. Gary Nagel and Rick Deli attendent the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri. Convention talks were very informative and featured such speakers as Nelson Rockefeller and Johnny Bench. There were also many other worth- while activities held at the National Convention. LIBRARY CLUB Library Club continues its service to the school this year by working in the library to make it run more smoothly and serve the student body more efficiently. In addition to clerical and general upkeep tasks, the Library Club has again been involved in special projects. In the beginning of the year they hosted a teachers' tea where they greeted teachers at the door, gave them a guided tour of the library, pointed out new books and materials, handed them lists of audio visual materials available for their use and provided punch and cupcakes for their refreshment. During the second semester, in after-school sessions, the Library Club learned more about researching and finding information in the library, plus, they sponsored book talks. Library Club had a Book Fair at the end of the year in addition to selling paperbacks during the year. Of course there was a social side, too, to Library Club which culminated in an awards dinner in May. This year, for the first time, the council consisted of four elected student representatives from each class, plus the vice- president from each class. The modification was made in the hope that the addition of the vice-presidents would improve communication between the student council and the class officers. This change has proved successful and will probably be continued in the future., One of the major projects that the Student Council sponsored this past year was the 1st Annual Junior Olympics. The evening included fierce competition between students, faculty, and community organizations. TTie girls went into this match determined to win. They did, and it was the beginning of a great season. Eventually the con- test for the Conference Title was narrowed to Richland Center and River Valley. At their first meeting, Richland Center defeated River Valley in two straight games. The hopes for the Conference Title were dampened, but only momentarily. The rest of the season went well except for a bad night against the Chieftains. River Valley then came back their last match of the season to beat Richland Center in a crowded Hornet gymnasium. Consequently, the Hawks ended up sharing the S. W. A. L. crown with an upset Richland Center team. The next step for the team was Sub-Regionals, where the girls defeated Dodgeville to move into Regionals. Enthusiastic fans cheered the team from Regionals into Sectionals with an undefeated record. At Sectionals, the girls girls met up with Richland Center again and beat them in two straight games but lost two games to Lancaster. As a result of having two losses each, River Valley and Richland Center had to meet for one more game to decide who would be in second place. Richland Center stung the Hawks 15-9 and the River Valley Blackhawks returned home with no hopes of capturing the State Crown . . . this year. Much of the team's success is attributed to returning letter winners — Brenda Hackl, Chris Crook, Jane Harring- ton, and Sue Pulvermacher (1974's Most Valuable Player). Another one of the team's major assets was Tara Yttfi, a transfer student from Madison. Tara was voted the team's Most Valuable Player for 1975. Tara Yttri, Sue Pulver- macher, and Chris Crook were named to the S. W.A.L. All-Conference Team. 117 ROW 1: Cheri Lamont, Bernie Kaul, Kathy Limmex, Rita Kaul, Sue Wilkinson. GIRLS’ TRACK The 1976 Girls Track Season was a year of rebuilding with many new faces comprising the team. The girls finished conference competition with 2 wins and 4 losses. The wins came as they easily defeated Riverdale and Boscobel. The four losses were at the hands of Fennimore, Richland Center, Viroqua, and League Champions Prairie du Chien. The girls worked hard throughout the season and ended up finishing fourth in the S. W. A.L. Conference. SUE PULVERMACHER — STATE CHAMPION The 1976 girls track season ended with the headlines of the STATE JOURNAL'S Sports Page reading, ’’Pulvermacher Sets Second Straight Record. The caption was in tribute to Senior Sue Pulvermacher as she honored River Valley by bring- ing home two state crowns as she set Class 'B records in the Shot Put and Discus. On Friday, June 4, she broke her own state record in the Shot Put with a heave of 42' 4 3 4 before coming back on Saturday to set a new State Record in the discus with a toss of 129' 3 . She became the first athlete in River Valley history to bring home a state crown in any athletic event when she set the Class B Shot Put Record in 1975. The two State Championships of 1976 in the Shot Put and Discus are a fitting finale to Sue Pulvermacher's athletic feats at River Valley High School. 132 JoELLEN E BE RLE, High Jump CONNIE HACKL G TERI NACH- REINER — Runners CHRIS CROOK, Shot Put GIRLS’ TRACK STARS MARY WANKERL, Block Start BRENDA KNUD SON, Long Jump LAURIE WHITE, Hurdles ROSE YANKE G JULIE MICHELS, Batton Exchange 133 JoEllen Eberle — High Jump Mary Wankerl -- High Jump Tammy Crook — Discus Karen Cowling -- Discus Laurie White in the Starting Blocks Connie Hackl — Mile Run 134 ROW 1: Bob Haas, Mike Paulus, Pat Compty, Jay Neider, Steve Feiner, Gene Roberts.
