CHESS CL UB Chess, a challenge of the intellect and also of the Blackhawk Chess Club, is back again this year. As usual the club captured Miss Tessmer, not as queen, but as advisor of the chess club. The club is made up of a group of students who enjoy the game, the competition and the all-around challenge the game of chess involves. Chess club is busy with many activities throughout the year. The biggest and most exciting is the tournament, which is designed to bring out the competitive spirit of the chess players. The winners in the advanced, intermediate, and beginners cat- agories are awarded trophies. Chess club is a very interesting and worth-while club to become involved in especi- ally for those with a love for the Game of Kings. Its membership has more than doubled and the activi- ties continue to include both social and service projects. Most of the club members serve as library aides whenever they have free time although they are not required to do so. These aides help with such daily tasks as checking in the mail and other materials, shelving materials and assisting in the general upkeep of the library. The aides and club members have also worked on special service projects such as reorganizing and making posters for the periodi- cals room to make magazines easier to find. Members also helped reorganize the vertical file and prepare a list of all the AV materials in the school for the teachers. The big fall project for the club was both service and socially oriented. The club planned, paid for, prepared served an excellent dinner for the faculty before parent-teacher conferences. ' ANNUAL STAFF The twenty-five members of this year's annual staff has worked hard to put together an annual that we hope will be enjoyed by all. The hours were divided between sorting pictures, arranging pages, typing rough drafts, and preparing final drafts for publication. Much effort was devoted this year to soliciting ads from businesses in the River Valley and surrounding areas which included Dodgeville, Sauk City, Mazomanie, Middleton and Madison. These funds along with the money raised by the selling of annuals during the school year, have made possible the publication of this year's annual. Members of the FFA participate in such things as cattle judging, crop judging, the school fair, county and state fairs, trips to farm and agriculture shows. During the school year the chapter members make money by selling popcorn during football games. They also have a 7-acre plot from which they sell their corn crop each year. FFA members learn leadership and new practices in agriculture so that when they graduate they will be able to use the latest methods of farming and display leadership in their own community. LETTERMEN’S CLUB The Lettermen's Club is an organization aimed at giving all athletes a better understanding of the basic concepts under which the entire athletic program is run and also a chance for them to express their opinions as to the pro- blems involved in athletics. It is hoped that by this we can develop a sense of unity and strength from within the athletic program and this will carry on to the various seasonal sports. The club is currently active in the selling of concessions at various athletic events. Presently, pop, popcorn and candy bars sold during events are the sole income of the Lettermen's Club, but plans are being made for a candy bar vending machine to be installed. Members of the club must have lettered in one of the major sports to be eligible. The need for officers was disre- garded this year due to the cooperation and participation of the members and our advisors, Mr. Derrickson. Had it not been for Mr. Derrickson the club would have most probably remained in its previous dormant state. River Valley is only now beginning to revitalize its athletic program. New equipment has been purchased for the gymnastics department, the football and wrestling departments, and a new track has been given the go-ahead by our school board. As the athletic department grows, the Lettermen's Club hopes to expand and enhance its success LETTERMEN'S COUNCIL - Pat Compty, Dale Bradley, and Stuart McCaskill. 72 NEW MEMBERS - ROW 1: Sheila Schmitz, Renee Marklein, Beth Nachreiner, Vicki Radel, Debbie Lamont, Barb Silko, Sherri Hawkins. Its purpose is to encourage scholarship and activity in the community and to promote leadership and good character qualities. To become a member you must maintain a certain grade point average. For sophomores, you must maintain a 4:00 grade point average; for juniors, a 3.75 grade point average; and, for seniors, a 3.50 grade point average. A faculty administration panel then picks the students they feel qualify in the other three areas - community activity, leader- ship, and character. The River Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society has a yearly project the raising of money which is then sent to a charity picked by the Society. They must find topics write up the articles, type them, proofread them and finally send them into the Richland Center Observer to get the ar- ticles printed. When these articles come back, they must be proofread again. The paper then must be laid out and put together. Titles and pictures must be found to fill the paper and then it must be sent back to be printed into the final newspaper. All of this occurs in one week during ninth hour, after school or any other spare time. These people put in a lot of time to get the newspaper out and to get the papers to the students. This newspaper. The Bridge , is really a bridge over the communication gap between all the people at River Valley. The staff is trying to live up to this standard and keep River Valley informed about what is really going on, to get the deeo- down ins and outs of River Valley students. FRENCH CLUB One of the major goals of the French Club is to bring the group in closer contact with the French world. The sche- dule of activities for 1974-1975 promises to fulfill that goal. It was decided to send an exchange student to France for a period of one month, after which time the student will bring a French student back for a month's stay with us at River Valley. To finance this project, the club held one pizza drive which ended December 7. Another fund-raising project is planned for the spring. Other activities included a trip to Whitewater University, where two French skits were presented by River Valley students at a French festival on November 23. This was so successful that the group decided to have a Mardi Gras (fat Tuesday, pre-Lenten) festival at River Valley and invite area French students to participate. Skits, games, songs, a French feast, prizes, and possibly a French movie were planned. And finally, the club hopes to hold a French week-end at a camp in the spring. The purpose of this project is to im- merse as many students as possible in a French experience. 76 ROW 1 DOUGLAS COONS (Advisor), Rhonda Kinyon, Deb Druckrey, Cindy Haag, Shellie Feick, Debbie Lamont, Sue Schwartz, Kathy Crook, Rose Slaney. The club activities include monthly meetings the sponsorship of ski lessons and ski trips. The club meets regularly throughout the school year to resolve its business and plan activities. Ski programs are al- so organized and presented at the meetings. The programs include ski films, demonstrations of ski equipment and speakers from area ski resorts. The club has continued to sponsor ski lessons at area resorts. The lessons are presented in a package plan and made available to the ski club members at a discount. This program has given club members an opportunity to learn how to ski and to improve their skills at the intermediate and advanced levels. The ski club also organizes several ski trips throughout the winter. These trips provide members an opportunity to ski at a variety of resorts throughout the state. These activities make the River Valley Ski Club an interesting and enjoyable organization and presents an excel- lent opportunity for all students to learn a recreational sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. 78 OFFICERS Steve Conley President Madelyn Alt Secretary Pat Rock Treasurer Sally Ramsden Vice President SEATED: Sherri Hawkins, Carol Olmstead, Sally Ramsden, Bernie Kaul, Jane Harrington, Theresa Hanson. STUDENT COUNCIL The general purpose of our Student Council is to promote general welfare and to develop student responsibility, initiative, and leadership. We also represent the student body in working with the faculty and administration in an advisory and cooperative capacity. We do as much as we can with any issue that arises, but we can't always do everything on our own. The Student Council needs backing from the students, administration, and the community. As an example of what we can do, here are some of the things we did during the '74- '75 school year. The club purchased 4 ping pong tables, 4 picnic tables, a stereo, a bench, sent and recieved 2 Foreign Exchange Students and more. Being on Student Council is of educational value in itself. You learn to cooperate, think things out, look into every aspect of a problem, etc. Being on Student Council is an experience most people will never forget. It is really something to think that out of all the people in your class you were 1 out of the 4 chosen to represent your fellow students. GIRLS’ TRACK SUE PULVERMACHER WINS STATE TITLE School Year 1974-1975 had ended for most River Valley stu- dents in May but Sue Pulvermacher was still practicing for the state track competition. On the 6th of June, Sue competed in the W.I.A.A. State Track Meet in Madison. She became River Valley's first athletic state champion and the second state champion in River Val- ley's history. (Michaeline Kraemer brought River Valley their first state championship in the late 1960's as she competed against public and parochial students from throughout the state in the state accounting championships held in Milwaukee and brought home the title.) Sue won the state shot put title this day with a record toss of 41'9 . Sue is only a junior and we are already looking forward to the next track season when we hope Sue will be River Valley's first two-time state champion. 134 YVONNE PLETZER Low Hurdles SHIRLEY KLEBESADEL Half Mile o GAYLE WOOD Shot Put SENIOR GIRL TRACK MEMBERS SHANNON DOLAN Long Jump SHERI HAWKINS LUANN WELKE Mile Relay JOLENE BAYER Discuss DEB BURKHALTER Quarter Mile BETTY RING High Jump 135 Football Cheerleader Letter Winners SPORTS AWARDS Wrestling Cheerleader Letter Winners Volleyball Letter Winners 136 Basketball Letter Winners Sue Pulvermacher receives basketball trophy from Coach Jane Hess.
