ANNUAL STAFF The 1973-74 Annual Staff has put in many hours this school year to meet their deadlines. The staff consists of two co-editors - Pat Stapleton and Deb Crook - and two business managers - Bonnie Williams and Tom Riek. One day in the life of an Annual Staff member would include designing pages, selling ads and pictures, and selling annuals themselves which involves effort, hard work, and responsibility. Each member contributes to the best of their abil- ity in an attempt to make this annual the best River Valley has ever had. The work of the Annual Staff has been supervised by Nancy Kollatz. ART CLUB The Art Club is a group of students organized to help extend interests in art beyond the classroom. It gives op- portunities such as visiting museums, doing extra activities, and extending the students' awareness of the beauty around them. This club has many fine points for the art-oriented person, and induces beauty of man's arts through the ages. Early in the year, they visited the Elvehjem Art Museum and art classes at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In the spring of the year, the members will again take their annual field trip to some art museum in the Chicago or Milwaukee area. BOOSTERCLUB The Booster Club is a group of students whose chief interest is to help boost the morale of the team by injecting enthusiasm into the student body. The Booster Club holds pep rallies and makes posters of special interest concern- ing games in all athletic events. Each member of the Booster Club gets a certain number of points for each poster he makes, meetings he attends, games he attends, and other activities in which he participates. A person who gets 75 total points receives a pin or an award. Overall, the Booster Club is a group of students who have pride in their school and their teams. Having our teams on top is our custom! FFA The River Valley FFA Chapter was first started in 1961 with a membership of 55. Today it is an organized group with a membership of 63. The members participate in such things as cattle judging, crop judging, the school fair, county and state fairs, trips to farm and agriculture shows, and the FFA softball team. During the year the chapter members make money by selling popcorn during football games. They also have a 7- acre plot from which they sell their corn crop each year. They have made money in previous years by selling Slow Moving Vehicle signs and Fire Extinguishers. The money is then used to buy things for the agriculture department. This year we purchased a high pressure water sprayer. FFA members learn leadership and new practices in agriculture so that when they graduate they will be able to use the latest methods of farming and display leadership in their own community. LETTERMEN’S CLUB The Lettermen's Club is an organization aimed at giving all athletes a better understanding of the basic concepts un- der which the entire athletic program is run and also a chance for them to express what they think is right or wrong with it. It is hoped that by this way we can develop a sense of unity and strength from within the athletic program and this will carry on to the various seasonal sports. NHS The National Honor Society, founded by Edward Rynearson, hit the national scene in 1921. A constitution was set up providing the steps by which secondary schools could be issued charters to become official members of the NHS. At the individual school, a selection committee made up of members of the administration and faculty selects can- didates for this organization. Candidates are selected according to their ability in the four virtues the NHS stands for - Character, Leadership, Service, and Scholarship. The candidates are then initiated in an induction ceremony where they recite the NHS Pledge, are presented with membership cards, and sign the chapter's register book. The National Honor Society's objectives are to provide community activity and carry out projects of national impor- tance. The association set up a scholarship program in 1945 to increase student interest in post high school educa- tion. Our local chapter's project has been to provide money for the Children's Foster Parents Plan. Membership in the NHS has grown tremendously over the years showing interest in the organization and an increase in community service. LIBRARY CLUB LIBRARY MONITORS The students in the pictures are library monitors and library club members. They are shown doing some of the various things that library monitors do. For instance, they check books in and out, help students find things through use of the card catalog and of course they get first hand knowledge of the books and information that the library has. Monitors also shelve books, put away magazines, and help check in the mail. Their work is not all routine, however. Sometimes they help with special projects to improve the library's collection and its use. Library club, a new club this year, also helps in special projects. For example, they helped reorganize the peri- odical room to make magazines easier to find. Many library monitors are also library club members, but you don't have to be a monitor to join library club or vice versa. Library club's main goals are to share book experiences and learn how to use the library to the best advantage. A variety of things can take place at a library club meeting. For instance, there may be book talks. Members may talk about good or bad books they have read or the librarian may introduce them to new books the library has or suggest other books that they might like to read. The members may also suggest new books for the library to pur- chase. In the fall the library club hosted a tea for the teachers and some new library materials were displayed. There was a Christmas party and a spring social meeting. Library club is just beginning at River Valley and it hopes to get bigger and better each year. It seemed as though our BRIDGE was about to collapse due to a lack of interest; that is, no one was willing to volunteer their time and effort to continue the fine tradition of our school newspaper. Once the plight of THE BRIDGE was made public, however, the students in the pictures on this page decided to do something about it. In short, THE BRIDGE was saved from the fate that befell a more famous bridge in London, England. The students who worked on the staff of THE BRIDGE didn't receive very much praise or recognition for their efforts, but without them River Valley High School would be just a little less lively - just a little less informed - just a little less happy. The national organization formerly known as Future Teachers of America has a new name: Student Action for Edu- cation. The River Valley Chapter has rechartered under this new name. While career exploration is still a basic chapter goal, new directions are being explored to provide more effective communication between teachers and students and between teachers and parents. The organization hopes to insure student involvement in improving and supporting education. Chapter meetings this past year gave opportunity for student-teacher dialogue and for mothers of students to visit classrooms. Other highlights of the year were a charter renewal Christmas party and an exchange meeting with the Richland Center Chapter. It also gives him the chance to visit other ski hills in the state. The club has visited hills as far away as Telemark at Cable, Wisconsin. Safety in skiing, rules of the road (or ski hill), types of equipment and the advantages and disadvantages of different types of equipment have been covered in general meetings at school. A skiing conditioning program has been held. Cross country skiing has been added to the Ski Club's agenda. Cross country outings are hoped for during the school year. Having a good time in the snow, going down a big hill safely, or across a quiet frozen field are this club's objectives. 66 SEATED: Tia Graves, Diana Walker, Greg Dietzman, Mike Olson, Sue Pulvermacher, Sally Ramsden. The main puipose of the Student Council is to act as an advisory committee to the administration and school board. The Council is also active in fund-raising activities. The funds are then used for programs that are beneficial to the student body. One of the major projects that the Student Council has sponsored is the Foreign Exchange Student Program.
