ANNUAL STAFF The main goal of the Annual Staff is to publish a book of memories for our student body. We work hard to make it a better and more interesting book each year. Early in the school year, most of our time is spent selling subscriptions and soliciting sponsors for our annual. The layout and designing of pages is done by staff members. We hope that you will enjoy this year's annual and will be proud to keep it as a remembrance of your school year. FT A The River Valley Chapter of the Future Teachers of America not only gives opportunity for its members to become acquainted with various aspects of teaching as a career, but it also provides other experiences to enable the member to understand more clearly the role of education in society, in preparation for their function as responsible citizens in the community in later life. The chapter has provided teaching and tutoring experiences for its members, as well as field trips to a college campus and to a unique educational program at Central Colony. A major service project for the chapter has been the gathering of coupons for Central Colony, particu- larly of coupons for the purchase of a bus. The chapter has been honored this year in having a state officer elected from its group. Janet McCluskey has served in several workshop programs, as an obligation of her office as state secretary of FTA. HEALTH CAREERS CLUB This year we officially changed our name from the Red Cross Club to the Health Careers Club, hoping to attract some more members - especially from the male department. Our membership did increase, but un- fortunately we didn’t find any career-minded boys in the health field. During our meetings we discussed some different health careers, projects, and field trips we wished to make. We visited Mendota State Hospital and Central Colony. The girls also have been a big help in assisting with the Sauk County Annual Spring Immunization Clinics in March, April, and May. The work they do is very interesting, including assisting the doctor, scrubbing arms, rounding up bus loads of children, and drying tears. All in all, our club has had an interesting beginning, and next year we hope to accomplish many more projects. CHESS CLUB The Chess Club was organized to provide a chance for advanced chess players to play in chess tourna- ments. Novices in the game of kings also have an opportunity, through the chess club, to learn basic offenses and basic defenses. When asked why students play chess. President Arlan Walker stressed the clear thinking and logic that chess develops in the individual. Tony Weston, co-organizer of the group, emphasized the challenge involved in tournament play and a desire to play chess clubs from other schools. In the chess club, the students have found a satisfying leisure-time activity. STUDENT COUNCIL The purpose of the Student Council is: (1) to promote the general welfare of the school, (2) to develop the student’s responsibility, initiative, and leadership, and (3) to represent the student body in working with the faculty in an advisory and suggestive capacity. Members of the Student Council are chosen each year. Each class has four representatives. There are also four officers which are elected from the previous Council to carry on the following year. The represent- atives are elected by the students and are a major deciding factor in the success of the Council. Their job is the betterment of all parties concerned - students, administrators, and faculty. If the student body wants things done, it is their job to elect responsible representatives. One project of the Student Council this year was to start a foreign exchange program. A foreign student will attend River Valley High School during the 1971-1972 school year. A student from our school will go to a foreign country during the summer of 1972 for a three-month period.
