ANNUAL STAFF The Annual Staff has worked throughout the school year compiling pictures of the year's activi- ties in order to give you a yearbook covering the events that you will want to remember from the school year 1969-1970. This annual contains over a thousand pictures for your enjoyment. The staff wishes to thank the many people who have helped us in any way with the production of this annual - especially the administration, faculty, staff, spon- sors, and photographers. Much time, effort, and work has gone into the production of this book - our hope is that you will enjoy it! Jodi Johnson, Mary Lynn Brickl, Bonnie Richards, and Donna White solicited many of the sponsors named in this book. They also sold subscriptions and designed some pages. Dean Brickl and Jerry Burns worked on the sports section of the annual and helped out in other areas. (John Gates was absent when picture was taken.) ROW 1: J. Price, J, Barton, J. Feiner, P. The purpose of the project is to work toward eliminating prejudices and inequalities involving differ- ences in culture, race, and creed. Activities which helped to carry out this project included sending Christ- mas letters to area soldiers in Viet Nam; learning about other parts of the world from speakers who have traveled abroad; and sending money to sponsor a war orphan. The chapter sponsored a bake sale, a taffy apple sale, and a dance to earn money to carry out the projects and also to send four delegates to the state FHA convention in June. The chapter also had a fall rally with the Sauk-Prairie chapter. ROW 1: J. Pailing, M. Hetzel, T. Kraemer, J. White, B. Peterson, K. Meixelsperger, R. Greenheck, K. Hunter, M. Kane, D. Copus, C. The goals of its members are to improve character and personality; to experience a realistic look at teaching; to study and identify the qualities and aptitudes which good teachers possess, and to find ways to cultivate these in self; and finally, to visit colleges for wise selection of career training. There were visits to the Richland Campus and to Whitewater State University. Senior members and of- ficers attended a conference at Platteville State University. An intensive program in observation of teaching at the junior high school took place in the Spring. The concluding event of the year was an outing at the Nooyen farm and deer park. ROW 1: D. Students come to help during their study halls and noon hours. Without the students' help, John's fight against Cerebral Palsy would be much harder. The number of students who have helped during the two school years of therapy is unknown. Only a portion of the students that helped are pictured. The others were un- available at that time. A roller skating party and a water skiing party were held at the end of the year to thank the students for the tremendous effort they had given during the year. The River Valley Blackhawks won the Southwestern Wisconsin Athletic League championships in three major sports - namely football, basketball, and baseball. Our school was also well represented in Cross Country, Wrestling, Track, and Golf. Many of these lettermen were seniors and we hope that the desire and dedication of these athletes will be a positive influence on the future athletes of River Valley. We salute the coaches as well - in football. After becoming adjusted to their school schedules in the fall and estimating the time their class work will require, the students may volunteer one (1) to five (5) periods a week. No student spends more than a period a day in library service. As aides they assist in many of the routine tasks which must be performed in the library. Some of the services with which they are concerned are charging learning materials out and in at the circulation desk, shelving books, reading shelves, and keeping the magazine files organized in the periodicals room. Another function which employs their talents is the periodic changing of the bulletin board. For those who like to assist in the processing of books before they go on the shelves there are activities such as making out work cards, stamping the books, and giving the books their final check. Some aides become efficient searchers, a function which has them checking the card catalog to see if the library has a particular book or reference set, and if so, which edition it is. Besides the great interest in the library, in books, or in being of service to the students and their school, some aides are interested in watching the library function. It gives them the opportunity to evaluate the pro- fession of school librarianship and to consider it as a personal career. NHS Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the high- est honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. While high scholarship is the primary requirement for consideration in election to the River Valley Chapter, three other qualities are stressed: leadership, character, and service. With a four point average, a student may be elected as a provisional member at the second se- mester of the sophomore year. For juniors the requirement is a 3.75 average, and for seniors an average of 3.50 is necessary for consideration for membership. It is the goal of the River Valley Chapter that its members not only demonstrate the best in schol- arship, leadership, character, and service, but that they also exert a positive influence so as to pro- mote improvement of those qualities in the entire student body. It also provides the student and faculty a chance to express their ideas and views on affairs of interest to the student body and to present both sides of these issues. The paper gives the students on its staff a chance to observe and participate in the organization of a small scale newspaper. PHOTO CLUB The River Valley Photo Club was organized for the first time this year. The school set up an excellent, fully equipped darkroom; but, except for one person, its members had little or no knowledge of the technical aspects of photography. Through the club’s on-the-job-training program its members became proficient at not only taking pictures, but also developing, print- ing, and displaying their works. The club had many activities and supplied quite a few services during the year, including community service photography, sports coverage, a photo contest, aerial photography, and a school assembly program. Develop school spirit, student morale, and pride in the school. 2. Provide a means for expressing student opinion. 3. Promote the general welfare of the school. 4. Teach leadership and followership. 5. Furnish an opportunity for citizenship training. It is difficult to imagine a school in which these contributions are unneeded, and so it is difficult to imagine a school that does not need a student council. A student council is a student organization, composed of students elected by students to represent them, to speak for them, and to work for the general welfare of the school. A student council, through its cooperative efforts with other student and faculty groups, can give stability and vitality to all aspects of a high school - the student body, the teachers, and the administration. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Howard Crook, Treasurer Bill Ring, President Debbie Schutz, Secretary Sue Duren, Vice-President 74 NURSERY The Spring Nursery School at River Valley was very successful. Girls from the child development class, under the supervision of Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Novak, and Mrs. Eichorst, planned and carried out the nursery school which ran through the month of May, three days a week, in a portable building at the rear of the high school. About 25 children from ages 2 to 5 participated. The High School students gained valuable practical experience with children, and the project aided in promoting the physical, social, and mental growth of the children. The thirty high school girls, in groups of two or three, had a chance to plan and carry out the activities of a certain day. Activities included outdoor games and hikes, finger painting, seeing films, seeing pets, forming a rhythm band, playing in a sand box, and making tissue flowers. 75 Mr. Max Klein, in action as he delivers the Graduation Address entitled, The Present Hour.
