THE HAWK 1963 Annual Staff River Valley High School Spring Green, Wisconsin WE, THE STUDENTS, INVITE YOU TO SHARE A YEAR AT The people of this district voted to consolidate on April 26, 1960, in order to improve the curriculum and to provide more advanced methods of education. Our district includes parts of four counties - Sauk, Iowa, Richland, and Dane - and covers 270 square miles which makes it the largest rural school district in Wisconsin. The building was designed by Jack Klund Associates of Madison. We broke ground on June 1, 1961, and the office staff moved in July 1, 1962. The classrooms were completed on August 1, 1962, and school officially opened on August 27, 1962. These materialistic facilities are only part of any high school and cannot make a school by themselves. For our school to be successful, it will require the complete support o‘f the student body. The future of River Valley High School will depend upon the students realization of three short but mighty words: SPIRIT - PRIDE - LOYALTY. Let's all rise to the challenge and make River Valley one of the outstanding schools in the state. EDWARD V. HOCH, Superintendent WE ARE ALSO GRATEFUL TO OUR ADMINISTRATION, PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE I am happy to have an opportunity to bring a message to my students. You have been provided a great opportunity and you, as students, will determine whether we will have just another school or an institution of learning of which our community will be proud. Your building is both beautiful and functional and you, and all who follow you, will be forever grate- ful to the farsighted citizens who have provided these excellent facilities. Future traditions re being formed and the sacrifices of the district will be worthwhile if everyone meets the challenge and works to his ability. LAVERNE M. SNEATH, Principal SEATED: Walter Urfer; Ken Hottmann, Clerk; Helen Martin; Charles Roberts; Roy Anding, Director. STANDING: Myron Moore, Treasurer; Nordeen Gilbertson; Vincent Limmex; Norman Kraemer. OUR DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD, To the Students of River Valley High School-- It has been your good fortune to initiate the use of our new high school building. We have placed our faith in you and it has been justified; and we are more than satisfied with the results. To the Seniors of River Valley High School-- Congratulations Qn your achievements! Students are encouraged to work in- dependently in order to develop creative ability. The program con- sists of projects in drawing and sketch- ing with pencils, charcoal, pen and ink; painting with watercolor, tempera, and oil; lettering and poster making; designing with paper, modeling with clay, paper mache', and wire; and the development of an appreciation for the beauty all around us. This syllabus contains a program of art expression which will serve in making sensitive, perspective, and worthy citizens. FOREIGN LANGUAGE — GERMAN River Valley High School presently offers to its students an extremely adequate language laboratory. The students in the advanced German class undoubtedly remember the difficulty in acquiring the exact pronounciation that so often encumbered them in the old schools. So this year, having the advantage of tapes adapted with excellent speakers and booths, the class of 23 students is furthering itself in translation and advanced speech. First year German classes are also finding it very easy to adopt the German language. Slide films and occasional recorded songs and stories in the foreign language add enjoyment to the class work. Oral reports of interest to the entire class and skits worked out by the 31 students help broaden their knowledge of Germany's culture - socially, politically, and literally. 13 SCIENCE The science curriculum at River Valley includes the fol- lowing subjects: General Sci- ence, Biology, Physics, Chem- istry, and Physical Science. This was the first year that the students in this area had access to the use of audio-visual equipment, excellent laboratory facilities and modern teaching techniques. All science stu- dents have the opportunity to receive a well-rounded education in the field of science. AGRICULTURE The agricultural curriculum at River Valley is based on a course of study, prepared by the state of Wisconsin for Wisconsin high schools. Vocational agriculture education is designed for those who have entered upon or are pre- paring to enter upon the occupations of the farm. The program consists of organized group and individual instruction given in schools, on farms, or anywhere else that systematic instruction can be given. Essential to the program is practical experience in farming. Farm training must include scientific study and practical experience. 14 BUSINESS EDUCATION Students interested in entering the business world or in taking business subjects for their own personal use have the opportunity to choose from a wide selection of subjects offered by the business education department. The subjects available are Office Practice, Typing I and H, Shorthand I and II, and Bookkeeping. Office Practice is available to seniors only and the main purpose of the course is to prepare young people for job application. ENGLISH In the English Department, three years are required and the fourth year of English is optional. The senior year of English includes two divisions which are distinctly different, because the division that goes to college has a different course from the others. The second division is a course of study of general nature while the first division instructs college bound students in literature. MUSIC The music department offers a wide variety of channels through which musical experience and growth can be achieved. Although the program is built essentially on the performance aspect, it is also our goal to produce artistically alert, intelligently critical, well-rounded musicians - people who will enjoy throughout their life in an ever-advancing way the art of music. In addition to solo work and numerous small ensembles, the formal groups in the music department are these: A Band, B. Band, Mixed Chorus and Girls' Glee Club. PHYSICAL EDUCATION To work hard and play well you need a strong healthy body and an eager vigorous mind. Physical Education aims to keep you physically healthy and mentally alert. The vigorous physical activity will release tensions and erase irritations. Learning to play together helps people learn to live together. The competition involved in our space age requires endurance of body and mind. Constant attention to our health practices will increase the efficiency of body and mind. Proper exercise done regularly each day results in increased efficiency in all parts of your body. When you get the exercise you need, you look and feel better and can work better. A constant program of physical improvement contributes to your health and well being and makes you a better member of life's society. HOME ECONOMICS The study of Homemaking includes many aspects of family life. It includes planning of nutritious meals for the family to build health, the care of children during their preschool years, care of the sick in the home, housing and home furnishings, safety in the home, career for girls, marriage, etiquette, teen-age relations, care and repair of clothing, and budgeting. It takes four years of study to cover all these phases with different areas of clothing con- struction and food preparation each year. SOCIAL STUDIES Social Studies 9, Social Problems, Economics, Geography, World History and United States History are the six subjects offered in the Social Studies Department. Students are taught the history of the United States and her relations with foreign nations. They are also given the opportunity to understand present-day problems and learn the role they will play in helping to solve them. 17 In each of the four years in the Industrial Arts curriculum, certain projects are required of every student. The freshmen deal mostly with handwork. The sophomores work chiefly with mechanical drawing and develop house plans. The juniors learn machine operation and work with sheet metal. The seniors deal with welding and electricity. MATH The Mathematics Depart- ment offers a wide selection of courses for the high school student. Algebra I, Algebra II, General Math, Geometry, Senior Mathematics, and Advanced Mathematics are the subjects offered in the math curriculum. A new approach is being presented to the accelerated algebra class, using the most modern methods of Algebra. The new process resembles geometry in its basic function INDUSTRIAL ARTS SENIORS ROSE ANN ALT THOMAS ALT ELAINE ANDING LARRY ANDING GARY BAKER DONNA BARTLE RONALD BAUER 20 KENNETH BECK DANIEL BINDL LAVINA BLOEDOW ROGER BOUGHTON MARY JANE BRUMMER MARY BUCHNER DENIECE CARVER 21 COLLEEN COYLE TERRY CRARY MARY MARGARET CROWLEY FRANCES DEDERICH DONALD DOLAN EDWARD DOLAN ROBERT DONNER 22 TIMOTHY DOYLE DAVID DRUCKREY MAUREEN FARGEN DIANE FLEMING KENNETH FOSBINDER NANCY FRY KATHLEEN FUNK 23 LEROY GRAVES GORDON LA VERNE GULSRUD JANE GUTKNECHT RICHARD HAAS KATHLEEN HAMEL SHARON HANEY ARTHUR HOLFORD 24 RUTH HUNTER JAROLD JAMES MARY JANTZEN GLORIA JEANNE JONES RAYMOND KEPLER BARBARA KINYON MARY LEE KOLAN 25 DIANE KRAEMER RICHARD KRAEMER LAURA LADD LARRY LAMPMAN DEBORAH LIEGEL JERRY LIMMEX MAUREEN UNS JOHN McCARVILLE SHERYL McCASKILL MAX MACHOTKA DONALD MAXWELL YVONNE MEILI FRANK METCALF JEAN MEYER 27 MARLISS MILLER CLASS COLORS — TERRY OLSON MARION JOANNE PHILLIPS BLACK AND WHITE DONALD LAVERN RICHARDS BARBARA PRATT JOHN RICHARDSON 29 SHIRLEY ROBERTS CLASS FLOWER WHITE ROSE RICHARD ROELKE EMOGENE STARR NANCY STAFFORD CLASS MOTTO THE DOOR TO SUCCESS IS LABELED PUSH JAMES THERING 31 ROBERT WILKINSON MARJORIE WEITZEL SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Larry Anding, Treasurer; Barbara Pratt, Secretary; Max Machotka, Vice-President; John McCarville, President. Established in 1960, the council, under the supervision of Mr. Hoch, helped in the selection of the school colors and nickname. The main project of the council this year was to construct and adopt its constitution. Other projects undertaken were an all-school Christmas party, a March of Dimes drives, and the establishment of a school supply store. During May, 1963, officers and representatives for next year's council were elected. ELAINE ANDING, Treasurer ROGER BOUGHTON, President ALICE NACHREINER, Secretary 50 ROW 1: F. Rach, L. Fosbinder, J.
