The use of more pages and more pictures is the most noticeable change. Among the more important features is the padded cover and sewn pages which were made possible by dona- tions made by professional people. We feelthese two features have given our annual a. much more enchanting and desirable appearance. The 1961 Donian was published by the American Yearbook Co. and the photography was done by Cubberly of Delaware. Although the staff worked during the fifth period, many sessions were held after school to complete copy to meet deadlines. We hope this year's Donian will be the best annual ever published by the Caledonia High School. 2 -if . Wie-3 When September arrives And activities start, Much fills our days, We can't tell them apart: We cherish them all, But our memory's not clear, So in order to keep them, We've stored them in here. at Now as they all happened, We've recorded each treasure, And when we have finished, 3 You can read them with pleasure. CALEDONIA LOCAL SCHOOL FFF? Dedication For Alma Maters' Halls of Learning, Many hearts will soon be yearning, Many silent tears will fall, Remembering Her as best of all. For now our High Schools must concede To a greater plan, to meet our need, As we of '61 must go Our schools themselves must also grow. To each of you who holds them dear We dedicate our book this year, And pray you, too, will find your place, In River Valley's fond embrace. We hope that the information is correct. However, there may be some cases in which the information is not up to date. In many cases, we had to leave off the address as we could not readily get this information. Many persons have contributed to the corn- piling of the alumni members, but the one person who was primarily responsible for this is Flora Mae Fichtner, who has spent many hours trying to gather and arrange this alumni. Class Histor The Caledonia High School Class of 1961 started in the first grade during the fall of 1949. There were thirteen girls and fourteen boys, all of whom were then looking forward to a happy first year at school. Mrs. McNew was the lucky first grade teacher who had the pleasure of starting us on the road to success, and I am sure that we all remember her very well. The second year of school found us all very glad to return from our summer vacation and now we all felt much older because we were not just first graders now,but second graders. Our teacher this year was Mrs. Williams, and unfortunately there was not enough room in the school house for us so we had to share with the third grade what was then known as the Uni- versalis Church. We all grew to like there, though, and it was a good thing, too, because we spent our third year of school in it under the supervision of Mrs. Adams. The fourth grade found us back in the school house again with Mrs. Garber as our teacher. We spent only half a year in this school house, and the rest in the new school which we liked! ! The one-half year we spent in the new school building during the fourth grade was the only time we had a chance to really enjoy one of the newer classrooms. The fifth grade found us in the old school building again with our new teacher, Mrs. Kennedy. We really didn't rnind, though because all that really mattered to us was school. Q? ? '? ?J Now we began the sixth grade and were very deeply impressed because we had made it this far. Mrs. Walter was our sixth grade teacher and for some reason, which none of us has ever been able to figure out, she stayed with us through our seventh year. We must have realized that we were growing up finally, and decided to be ladies and gentlemen for a change. Anyhow, we were very glad to have her again and we did feel more at home as we started our first year of Junior High School. The eighth grade made us all feel as though we were really grown-ups now, because we spent our first year upstairs and with the high school, too. This soon grew old, and we went on our weary way to become freshmen. Mr. Pauly, l know, was very sorry to see us go, but we couldn't help it if we passed. Our eighth grade tests proved to many that we were a class of knowledge as we all ranked very high! Freshmen at last! Boy, we thought we'd never make it, but we did. This year Mrs. Boger felt very lucky because she knew she was to be the homeroom teacher of a very smart and polite class? We were all really excited about being big freshmen at first, but a few weeks it wore off and we were ourselves again. We were all very enthused about getting our rings in the fall of 1959. We slowly crept through our junior year with Mr. Green again being our homeroom teacher. tl-Ie was in our sophomore year, alsol. We kept our fingers crossed that nothing would go wrong to keep us from being seniors the coming year. Then, here we were, and all in so short a time, too. To most of us, it only seemed like yesterday that we just couldn't wait until that first day at school, and now, 12 years later, we felt the same excitement in a different way. We all wish to express our thanks to Mr. Stephens, our homeroom teacher for helping us. The class of 1961 includes both members from Caledonia and members previously from Martel. With the history of our class coming to a close, we all wish to thank the many others who had a part in it. If it weren't for YOU, we would never have had A Class History. Martel ' ROW ONE: Carol White- ' amire, Patricia Fabian, Joyce Worcester, Roger Pursley, Charles Pin- yerd, Louise Burkhart, Delmer Hildreth, Lanny Price, Janis Scott, Billy Wollum. ROW THREE: Mrs. Lyon, Elaine Ross, Joyce Miller, Ruth Ann Pletcher, Kenneth Hill, Jim Landis, Joyce Angel, Ruth Coulter, Ann Winters, Brian Porter, Bradford Kile, ABSENT: Mary Rice, Harold Pinyerd. In September of 1949 we entered school very excited about our new adventures. Members of our first grade class, who are still together, are Pat Fabian, Carol Whiteamire, Louise Burk- hart, Ronnie Clever, Larry Grimes, Jim Landis, Lewis Leathem, and Harold Pinyerd. The ones who, moved away are: Elaine Ross, Sandra Manring, Nancy Radcliffe, Brad Kile, Lanny Price, Billy Woolum, Brian Porter, Delmer Hildreth, Tom Sampley, Shirley Stinehelfer, Roger Pur- sley, Ray Swearinger, and Mary Rice. Our first and second grade teacher was Mrs. Mary Alice Lyon. Our fourth and fifth grade teacher was Mrs. Winters: Mrs. Hazel Lyon was our fifth and sixth grade teacher. Then we entered Junior High where everything was very confusing. It was hard for us to organize our time so we would make it to classes on time. By the eighth grade we were well broken in and found that junior high wasn't as confusing as we had thought. It was rather interesting. Then came the Freshman year with the big decision of what course we would take for the next four years of our schooling. Of course, the big event of our freshman year was freshman initiation. This was an event we all looked forward to, even though we wouldn't admit it to the seniors. We all enjoyed this day when the laugh was on us. The next year we were sophomores and already looking forward to going to New York and Washington. We planned money-making projects which included a bake sale, a round and square dance, and a scrap drive. We also had several parties and hayrides. Last year our class sold refreshments at the home basketball games. We also sold magazines and presented a play Moonshine and Honeysuckle. The play cast consisted of the members of our English class. As we entered this last year, we had seven of our original members and two others-- Ella McKinniss, and Brad Hatcher. Now as we are about to leave high school and go our separate ways, we are faced with the biggest problem of our life. The school faculty has given us the foundation for life and now it is up to us to build upon it. 27 Junior Class Play J pzv- Y .,,,-I-' l... , ff -,af ,.,,- -' - AN..- - ., T Q' Q.. ,,..,l2-fr I . -. --Y' - ' ' x V H,,:,.- L' Our Junior Class Play, TREE POINTS INN, was presented in the school auditorium on April 8, 1960, under the direction of Mr. Gary Murray. Cool, man, cool! Beat 'em, boys, beat 'em. f 30 Class Prophecy 1961 . . . 1975 This is my first visit back to Caledonia since I graduated. I hurried up town to see if I could find any of my classmates. I went into the bank and found Joyce Bayles busy punching keys. She cashed a check for meg I went into the restaurant to find Ella Kelly and Cathy Smith the new owners. They call it the E 8: C. As I walked across the street, I saw a sign that read, I..ANNY 'S AUTO BODY REPAIR SHOP, where Lanny Gist is the sole proprietor. I went across the street to Douce's Insurance and saw Teddy Noggle, who is the new auditor. He always did work well with figures! I went next door where I found Debby Clark owner of Clark's T.V. and Appliance. I went in and found Carolyn Kightlinger talking about some woman she imbombed. She now has her own Funeral Home and she offered to measure me for a coffin. Of course, since Caledonia consolidated into River Valley School, there is no school here. I found that Linda Carter opened a dancing school and that Flora Mae Fichtner is her receptionist. Larry Grimes has his own barber shop. I hear he has more women customers than men! I took a drive to River Valley School. I walked into the office and saw Brad Kile, who is the principal, dictating a letter to his secretary Carolyn Phillips. The door opened and Jim Perry Walked in. He teaches math. Jim told me that a lot of former Caledonia graduates taught school. He took me to the gym Where I saw Becky Brooks, Phys. Ed. teacher, doing pushups with her class. I went to the commercial room and found that Sharon Snader had taken Mrs. Culbertson's place after she decided to retire. I saw Doris Douce giving a demonstration on sewing to the Home Ec. class. I always knew she would made a home ec. teacher after she showed me how she sorted buttons! Doris told me that Louise Burkhart had opened a florist shop in Martel and that Lewis Leathern is her best customer since he struck oil on his farm. I hear that Jim Landis became a policeman so he couldn't get arrested. They say Bill Miracle practically lives in a tree since he became a forest ranger. I talked to Ron Clever who teaches biology. He said he received a letter from Dave Seevers and Harold Pinyerd, who are busy sending the first man into space, Brad Hatcher. I stopped by the Marion General Hospital where I found Barbara Kaelber the head nurse pushing Georgia Miller in a wheel chair. Georgia decided to give up her career as an air stewardess after she broke her leg. Barb told me that Gloria Brennan has her own pharmacy set up at the hospital and is doing quite well. Barb told me she had to hurry because Curt Whiteamire was to be on T.V. to discuss the labor situation with the President. As I was coming from the hospital I saw Pat Fabian who told me she had a beauty shop in Martel and that Carol Whiteamire was her assistant. Pat told me that Ashton Ogle had a used car lot in Marion. I said good-bye to Pat and I drove to Caledonia. As for me, I have enough material assembled to write another novel. Written by Gretchen McClintock 31 Senior Trip ci 21 5 n Louis Leathem. The theme was Twilight Time being carried out by appropriate designs on the place cards, programs, covers, napkins, favors, etc. The menu consisted of tomato juice, mashed potatoes, swiss steak, garden salad, coffee, tea, or milkg rolls, and sherbet. The main program lasted until about 10:30. During the program, Mr. A. B. Augenstein and Mr. Jacob Retterer made a few remarks to the audience, some junior girls sang, three juniors along with Carolyn Coulter gave a saxophone quartet, Carolyn Kightlinger read the class prophecy, and Dr. Carrol Richey performed an interesting magician's act. As a final windup, a breakfast was served by the mothers of the junior class at 4 a.m. Sunday morning. There was an excellent turnout for it, about 55 persons enjoyed orange juice, eggs, bacon, toast, hot cocoa, milk or coffee, and rolls, after which everyone was ready to go home having enjoyed a full evening's entertainment. The well-planned banquet was enjoyed and shall be remembered as one of the highlights of 1961. 57 'Ag s Mrs. Bailey directing while Janet Anderson accompanies.
