September 3 4 THE PLACE ...... School Starts THE EVENT ...... Caledonia School Yes, twenty future men and women stand on the threshold of a new life. They're very young but can still rea- lize that something new is stretching ahead of them and that there is a long road they must travel. lt's a long road on which they will grow in knowledge and experience. Of the twenty to start, five remain together. Some of the others have left and returnedg others have gone on other ways. I salute, as the members of the Twelve-Year Club, Leona Belt, Inez Gist, and Rebecca Scheifler. Others stood with them whom you should rememberg Melvin Bryant, Bill Hurtt, Janet Benge, Marjorie Irey, Maynard Mulvaine, Joyce Smith, Pat Landes, and Bud Bending, these and seven others. The ones mentioned here being back memories, but the nicest memory of all is that of our first teacher, Miss Porter. To her we owe much, for it was she who started us on that road to the future. Well, we have come a long way. Down through the years, many things have happened tn us. We have leamed through books and experiences to do the things that we must know how to do when we reach the outside world of con- fusion and complexity. From simplest reading and writing we have advanced to higher science and literature un- til, we hope, we are ready for what the world may bring. What happened to those who started out? When did we receive those we now have? Let me enumerate. Bud Bending left us in the early stages and we gained Darlene Cochran and Bob Detwiler. In the fourth grade, Kirk- patrick School closed and gave us three more of our graduates, Virgil Hildreth, Janet Perry, and Marilyn Under- wood. In the fifth Doris Walkerjoined us. In the sixth, Marilyn Sullivan joined our ranks and Pat Landes left us. In the seventh, Janet Benge returned. In the meantime, we gained Don Crissinger, Ivan Bayles, Raymond Morrow, Don Miracle, but they were lost to us before we reached high school. Yes, many who have been with us through the early years drop away. In the eighth, we lost the boys previously mentioned and Melvin Bryant. In the ninth, Bill Hurttg the tenth, Joyce Smithg the eleventh, Marjorie Irey and another girl who came to us in the seventh and whom we always will remember. The most outstanding person in the history of our class was Lois Anne Levien. She was as much a part of our education as the books we studied. In learning how to understand her problems, we came to understand the world just that much better. May the Lord bless her wherever she goes and whatever she does. Then in our junior year we gained the last of our eminent class, Barbara Hildreth and Harold Lyon. Pat Landes also returne'd. Then in our senior year, Katie McKinsn'y who had been with us in our freshman year, returned. Now with these we stand on another threshold and are ready to step out into the world. Will our training be enough to guide us during the trials to come? We can only wait and see. Dear Diary I have just returned from a brief visit to Caledonia to see what my old classmates were doing. when I drove through the town I noticed a great change. A new Murphy's store had been added. I parked my 1928 Ford on the square and went in. Wnom did I see behind the snack bar, but LEONA BELT, She liked working behind a counter so well that she just hated to quit. If she gets married she can't work any longer, so Leona is still single. Leona told me our old classmate, VIRGIL HILDRETH is now President of the new Ford plant. This is easy to understand because Virgil just loved tearing apart and putting together Fords. I had just about finished drinking my coke when BOB DETWILER walked in. Bob told me he had just returned from a very interesting trip to England where his Donia Professional Basketball Team performed for the Queen. As I was leaving, someone called to me. when I turned, I saw JANET PERRY working behind the toy counter asthe balloon blower. She's finally getting some use out of that hot air. I left Murphy's and started back to my car when I decided to go into the post office. when I got inside I found that PAT LANDES now runs the post office. She told me that since she was up there most of the time she decided to get a job. In this situation she was in a position to know what went on in Caledonia, and she did. I didn't need to go any farther. She told me that: MARILYN UNDERWOOD is the head of a modeling firm out of New York. She finally put that strut to some advantage. REBECCA SCHEIFLER is now 28 and still trying desperately to get enrolled in one of the colleges of the nation. I knew she'd never make it. JANET BENGE is now in charge of the Caledonia City Library and its millions of books. DORIS WALKER is secretary for her husband who is in the contracting business. She can sit on his lap instead of someone else. MARILYN SULLIVAN is head of the Atnletic Department at Caldonia since Mr. Hamric's retirement. I guess it got to be too much for George. DARLENE COCHRAN is in business with her sister-in-law. They own and operate the world-renowned Blashinsky Dance Studios. INEZ GIST-well , Inez is still loafing at home. I guess she was just too lazy to start out on her own. BARBARA HILDRETH lives in Columbus where she is secretary to the Governor of Ohio. A11 those letters she wrote in school finally paid off. As I left the post office, whom did l see but HAROLD LYON driving by in his gold Cadillac. He had just returned from the West Coast where he made his latest movie, Calling All Girls . This has been a very exciting day but not nearly as exciting as tomorrow will be. Yes, tomorrow is the big day in my life. It has actually happened. Tomorrow I start co-starring on CBS-TV with none other than 'MY BOY ELVIS , Don't you envy mel Il Goodnight Katie McKinstry 13 C ass Will We the class of 1957, do hereby write up this last will and testament in proper mental and physical condition without undue prevarication and solemnly hope that the students and faculty of Caledonia School will accept and appreciate this note of departure.
