SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On the bright and shining Tuesday morning of September 2, 1941, eleven girls and nine boys entered the first grade room to begin their long struggle to obtain an education at dear old Caledonia School. Our teacher, Miss Ethel Porter, took one look at this class and realized that here before her eyes was a class destined to make history. (Remember, we didn ' t say what kind of history.) This extraordinary class was composed of the following pupils: Suzanne Reed, Patty Arnold, Mary Lou Cochran, Betty Weir, Velma Lyon, Carol Reish, Rosie Hunt, Nona Rigdon, Marlene Rasey, Ronnie Reed, Rodney Dice, Mary Ann Steward, Gene Ault, Glendon Kight, John Mead, Dorothy Osborn, Milton Osborn, and Roy Shuster. We managed to struggle through our first year of school, and by the time September rolled around in 1942 we were anxious to start to school once again, as we were second graders. Those who joined us were: Robert Belt, Charles Blevins, Billy Hough, and Patty Shonk. Throughout our second grade of school, Miss Porter, again, was our patient guide and counsellor. For our third year of school we advanced to a new room and a new teacher who was Mrs. Eleanor Fichtner. Our number was increased to 22 by the admission of: Lowell Coon, Wilma Jean Salisbury, Jack Whiteamire, James Kirk, Joann O ' Hare, and Joan Kirk. Mrs. Fichtner, who was to be our instructor once again, cheer- fully welcomed us into the fourth grade in the fall of 1944. There were now only 21 in our little band. Richard Wright, Myron Arm- bruster, Dixie Bodell, and Charles Butcher joined us. During the fourth grade school year we were saddened by the death of our superintendent, Mr. G. W„ Cox, who had been super- intendent at Caledonia for 15 years. There was such a large number of pupils in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades the next fall, that the fifth grade was divided. Twelve of us remained downstairs with Mrs. Garber and the fourth grade, and the rest (nine) of us went upstairs with the sixth grade to meet our new teacher, Miss Jane Brundige. In the course of the year we gained two new students who were welcomed into our class. There were: John Boger from Cardington and Barbara Miller from Green Camp. During the course of the year we lost two pupils who moved to Marion. In the sixth grade we were all together once again. Miss Brun- dige was our teacher that year also. The admission of Harold Cole and Jim and Dick Detwiler increased our number of 21 once again. All of us worked hard to make that year a success because we were looking forward to leaving grade school and entering Junior High. We entered school the next year feeling quite grown-up, for we had left recess and other characteristics of grade school be- hind. We discovered, however, that we were to share our home room with the eighth grade, the class we had been with in our first grade room. As Junior High students we had fewer, but more difficult sub- jects to study. We did not remain in one room for our classes as we had previously done in the grades. We changed classes just like the high school students did. Since the Junior High was composed of both the seventh and eighth grades, the class officers were members of both grades. It was our first experience at electing officers, but we felt that those we elected were capable ones. We elected: Robert Howe of the eighth grade, president; Dixie Bodell, seventh grade, vice-president; Margaret Martin, eighth grade, Sec. and Treas.; student council, Betty Phillips of the eighth grade and Velma Lyon of the seventh grade. Elsie Boganwright joined us, but Dixie Bodell moved away so our total number remained the same as that of the previous year. During our eighth grade, we gained two new members, Peggy Walter from Kirkpatrick, and George Deickert from Patterson, New Jersey. Twenty-one eager classmates entered the ninth grade. We were all looking forward to the time when we could march up onto the platform and receive our diplomas. We were initiated in grand and glorious style by the sophomores. Joe Chamberlin, Larry Nie- derhauser, and Jesse Wells swelled our enrollment to twenty-four. We held one bake sale during the year to begin our class fortune. Due to the loss of our money, we started our sophomore year penniless. We lost Elsie Boganwright, Gene Ault, Charles Butcher, Barbara Miller, Larry Niederhauser, and Jesse Wells, and gained Cassie Coulter and Dennie Sparrow. A bake sale and ticket-selling project for the Community Club were our only money-making ven- tures. Our class rings were ordered during the second semester. The size of our class began to dwindle during our junior year. We lost five of our members; Joe Chamberlin, Cassie Coulter, Jim Detwiler, Dick Detwiler, and Ronnie Reed. Our class rings were delivered to us two weeks after school started. Money-making projects were really begun in earnest. We earned about $300 by selling candy and pop at the football and basketball games, and by selling vanilla. During the first semester, our class presented the play, A Ready Made Family. On May 10, the juniors played host to the senior class and faculty for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet at the Greenlawn Inn, at Crestline. We began our senior year with a feeling of mingled gladness and sadness to think that this was to be our last year to work to- gether as a class. Shortly after the beginning of the year, Dorothy Osborne withdrew, leaving our class with an enrollment of four- teen. Many long hours of work were donated to selling advertise- ments and getting our yearbook ready for publication. We hope to earn enough money to finance our senior trip by printing a year- book and by presenting a Senior Class Play. At the end of this year, we will leave Caledonia High School to take our places as citizens in a far different world from that which we have already known. CLASS WILL With all due regard to those who may think us otherwise, we, the exceedingly intelligent and superior members of the class of 1953, after struggling through twelve years of severe mental tor- ture to attain this high and esteemed accomplishment, believe it is now our right and duty to set forth this last will and testament, thus declaring null and void all other wills previously made by us. We here and now, being of able body and sound mind, do will our sole possessions to the following worthy people and groups. I, BETTY WEIR -- will my red hair to anyone with nerve enough to wear it. I, PAT SHONK -- will my nickname Hogan to Beverly Harper. I, NONA RIGDON -- will my right to swear under my breath in typing class to anyone who can get away with it. I, JIM KIRK -- will my little black book of girls addresses to Bob Hill. I, DENNIE SPARROW -- will my right to argue with Miss Laibe in history class to Dick Stafford. I, JACK WHITEAMIRE -- will my 20-70 vision to Joe Green. I, RODNEY DICE -- will my ambition at athletics to Frank Mc- Donald. I, VELMA LYON -- will my hot temper to Lois Levien. I, PEGGY WALTER -- will my athletic ability to Rosei Medley. I, GEORGE DEICKERT -- will my right to bust up school property to Mike Murphy. I, JOHN BOGER -- will my right to get kicked out of Marion by the Police to Gene Ault. I, MARY LOU COCHRAN -- will my right to be late every morning to Jimmie Cain. I, SUSIE REED -- will my right to be a cheerleader four years in a row to Mary Hunt. I, MYRON ARMBRUSTER -- will my right to speak out in class without being called on to Ronnie Groves. To the teachers: MR. RETTERER -- we leave x the unknown quantity with the hope that someday he will find it. MISS LAIBE -- we leave a new notebook for history notes. MRS. NEILSEN -- we leave all the old eraser dust left on our type- writers. MR. WALLS -- we leave a new bottle of smelling salts that has some kick to it. MR. HARPER -- we leave a wide-awake, intelligent, and talkative Physics Class. MISS SCRANTON -- we leave a suit of armor to protect her from flying erasers. MR. LINDSAY -- we leave our old pencil stubs to keep the school ' s records with. PROPHECY The year? 1963, time surely has flown. I ' ve just finished supper and settled down in my favorite chair to look at this week ' s Life . I see that it has a pic- ture of a football star on the cover. Wait a minute, that isn ' t any ordinary foot- ball player, that ' s JACK WHITEAMIRE, the famous quarterback for Notre Dame. You ' d think anybody with Jack ' s money would have made good in the political world. Well, one never can tell! As I turn the page I see that NONA RIGDON ' S world famous dog kennels were raided by a group of fleas. Poor Nona, one would never have thought she would have gone to the dogs after being around birds the early part of her life. Well, well. What ' s this? Why a picture of a mansion built by that famous multi-millionaire, MYRON ARMBRUSTER. The caption under the picture says that Myron hit the jackpot on one of those You Take All quiz programs. And here I thought Myron would be a professional artist. I see that the next page is entitled Agriculture . I wonder if there is any- one here that I know. Why, of course, I should have known that was GEORGE DEICKERT pictured with his 2000 head of Holsteins. It was rumored that George wanted to be a dress designer. Speaking of dress, I see that BETTY WEIR has gone far in her Modeling School, she has 541 pupils enrolled at the present time. I thought Betty wanted to be a grade school teacher. I see the last page has some pictures from Ohio State University, and I be- lieve here at the bottom is a picture of JIM KIRK, the Dean at State. Jim surely has advanced rapidly; everyone thought him to be the romantic type, and as such should be married by now. But he ' s still a bachelor. Probably prefers to spread his charm around. Life surely has some famous people. I wonder if I could find any news about some of my famous classmates in the Marion Star . Wow! Look at those muscles on that fellow. Why it looks like, of course, it is DENNY SPAR- ROW, the world ' s greatest wrestler. Why just the other night Denny took on three men single handed (friends may call at the Timson Allen Funeral Home.) One might have expected Denny to follow in his father ' s footsteps. I see here that MARY LOU COCHRAN has donated two thousand dollars to a fund for elderly, homeless cats. It seems that Mary Lou was too busy with her career as a nurse to get married. Here ' s another name on the next page that seems familiar. Yes, it ' s PEGGY WALTER, famous doctor of Walter Reed Hospital. It seems Peggy has developed a new cure for fatigue. (The cure is less work). Speaking of less work, I see that PATTY SHONK gave up her job as baby sitter and is going to enlist in the Waves. Ship- A-Hoy , Patty. Here ' s another item, Mrs. Hinnamon, formerly SUSIE REED, was elected chairman of the Mothers Club. This was Susie ' s greatest ambition all through her high school years. Why, look at this ad. Honest John Boger -- your friendly Cadillac dealer . John surely has come a long way from that ' 36 Plymouth. And here ' s another ad. Just look at this dashing fellow whose picture appears in the ad. It ' s Rod- ney (Buy it by the truckload) Dice. He ' s the new owner of the ex-Resler Eleva- tor. Rodney ' s life ambition was to follow in the footsteps of Solon. It is really wonderful to be able to relax at home and catch up on all of one ' s old classmates. But the Star always carries a good bit of news about the good old class of ' 53, partly because VELMA LYON is the editor. Velma actually achieved her grade school ambition of being a paper girl. Guess I ' ll just curl up and take a nap now, after catching up with all the news of former classmates. Maybe I ' ll have a dream of even greater fortunes for the famous members of the class of ' 53. ■j •A i ? 1ST ROW: Dixie Detwiler, Jeanne Smith, Rosie Medley, Theresa Hipsher, Joanne Hoffman, Selorus Tomlin, Marian Deickert, Joyce Artis. 2ND ROW: Mrs. Neilsen, Gene Ault, Don Belt, Bob Noggle, Kenny Gilliam, John Kightlinger, John Wells, Joe Green, Bob Hunt. 3RD ROW: Ronnie Groves, Paul Layman, Dick Stafford, Joe Chamberlin, George Cochran, Francis Lyon, Jimmy Cain. On the evening of November 9, 1952 the Junior Class Play, A Ready Made Family was presented. The play was directed by our Class Advisor, Miss Louise Laibe. Agnes Martyn, a widow, while vacationing met an old sweetheart, Henry Turner, a widower, and they became engaged. Neither told the other of the children at home, three in one household and two in the other. The youngsters, having heard of the big surprise, planned to upset the matrimonial apple cart by acting their worst before their prospective step-parents. One had fits, another talked baby talk, a third played the role of a holy terror. Sammie be- came a kleptomaniac, and Doris, having had an operation, harped on that. Agnes and Henry finally emerged victorious and the kids were ready to accept their new parents. The cast was as follows: Agnes Martyn, a widow, Betty Weir; Bob, her son, Rodney Dice; Marilee, her elder daughter, Peggy Walter; Gracie, her youngest daughter, Dorothy Osborn; Miss Lydia, her sister-in-law, Velma Lyon; Henry Turner, a widower, Jim Kirk; Doris, his daughter, MaryLou Cochran; Sammie, his son, Myron Armbruster; Begonia, the darky cook, Pat Shonk; Nicodemus, the colored handyman, Dennie Sparrow. The Senior Class of 1953 will present the play, If Mother Only Knew on the evening of April 24, 1953 in the auditorium of the new school building. The play will be directed by Miss Louise Laibe, our class advisor. Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell are having their twentieth wedding anniversary! Mrs. Maxwell, however, is sure Dad has forgotten all about it, and bursts into tears when he is late for dinner. Aunt Mary and the three Maxwell children feel so badly they each call, a florist and order flowers in Dad ' s name. Betty Lou, fifteen, even makes a reservation for her parents at an exclusive res- taurant. Dad arrives and, sure enough, he has completely forgotten. He is soon reminded when a multitude of flowers start arriving. Mrs. Maxwell is beside herself with joy. Connie, the eldest daughter, reads the cards on the flowers and finds a large bouquet addressed very lovingly to her mother and signed Dr. Gooch. When Mother has lunch with Dr. Gooch the following day, Connie tells the other children and they decide something must be done about the wolf. What they don ' t know is that Dr. Gooch is a lady doctor with whom their mother went to college. Now she and her husband (who is also named Dr. Gooch) have suggested Mr. Maxwell for an important job on the board of directors of the local college. Meanwhile, Connie tells her father that their Mother has been stepping out with an unknown doctor. When the male Dr. Gooch comes to the Maxwell home to interview Dad about the position, you can imagine what happens. He never gets a chance to explain his mission -- Well, you just have to see the fun for yourself! The cast is as follows: Janet Maxwell, mother, Betty Weir; John Maxwell, father, Jim Kirk; Aunt Mary, mother ' s aunt, Pat Shonk; Connie Maxwell, daughter, Velma Lyon; Charles Brains Burke, Connie ' s boyfriend, Myron Armbruster; Betty Lou Maxwell, daughter, Peggy Walter; Bernadine, Betty Lou ' s pal, Susie Reed; Wilbur Maxwell, son, Dennie Sparrow; Hercules Nelson, Wilbur ' s pal, Jack Whiteamire; Gladys Gooch, mother ' s former college roommate, Mary Lou Cochran; Dr. Jeffry Gooch, Gladys ' husband, Rodney Dice. 32 JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET On May 10, 1952 the Junior Class played host to the Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Ban- quet held at Green Lawn Inn near Crestline. A springtime theme was carried out in all of the decorations . A bower of many pastel colored streamers made an artificial ceiling over the whole dining area, where the tables were ar- ranged in a large bouquet of wine roses, the class flower of the honored guests. Each Sen- ior was presented with one of the class flowers at the end of the program. The room and tables were decorated with many vases of lilacs, pastel colored tulips, and flags. Other table decora- tions included miniature bird houses, wishing wells, May poles and plaster country scenes with a rustic bridge and apple trees in blossom. Candle light added to the impressiveness of the decorations. Each guest ' s place was marked by a small nut cup in the form of a lacy May bas- ket from the handle of which hung a tag with the person ' s name. Jim Kirk, as master of ceremonies, introduc- ed Peggy Walter, Junior Class President who welcomed the Seniors and the faculty members. Margaret Burley, Senior Class President, gave the response. Included in the program for the evening were remarks by Superintendent T. D. Brown, County Superintendent D. T. Mills, a pantomine by Junior Class members, a piano solo by Mary Lou Cochran, and a saxophone solo by Bette Weir. After the dinner, the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing and playing cards. We Juniors felt our weeks of work and planning were well repaid by the apparent en- joyment of the Banquet by our guests. Bl9 l The Caledonia Junior Class presented a three-act play entitled Spooky Tavern , on November 9. 1952, in the school gym with the cast as follows: Lon Hacker, George Cochran; Ghost Woman, Jeanne Smith; Lucy Hacker, Jo- anne Hoffman; Joyce Wingate, Marion Deickert; Florabel Wingate, Selorus Tomlin; Bedelia, Dixie Detwiler; Ralph Channing, Kenny Gilliam; Terry Tan- ner, John Kightlinger; Willie Worgle, James Cain; Blackie Simms, Francis Lyon; Farone, John Wells. When Joyce Wingate brought her younger sister and her colored mammy, Bedelia, out to Old Mill Tavern on a stormy evening, with a view to buying it, turning it into a tea room and calling it Spooky Tavern, she started something. She was followed by three college mates. The hard- faced master of the tavern and his crafty sister did all they could to scare the young people away. A ghost woman, presumably the spirit of a murderess, prowled about, uttering blood-curdling screams. Here occurred the rendez- vous of two leaders of a narcotic-stealing gang and a dope-peddling college student with a detective from the federal narcotic service on their trail. The excitement was modified by laughs at the superstitious Bedelia and the ghost ridden Freshman. Caledonia representatives to the National Honor Soc- iety are, front row: Senior Velma Lyon, Junior Joyce Ar- tis, Senior Peggy Walter. Back Row: Senior Jim Kirk. Any Junior or Senior who is in the upper third of his class scholastically is eligible for membership. Other char- acteristics which must be present in their school record are Leadership, Character, and Service. These students were admitted into the society at the annual Marion County Honor Society Banquet held this year at New Bloomington School in April.
