Through this department, training is given to students which will qualify them for positions as secretaries, bookkeepers, and general clerical workers. lf students take advantage of the training offered in the Commercial Department, they have a life's vocation which will pay high salaries, and lead to promotions and good fine arts department The Fine Arts Department is composed of Art, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Orchestra and Band. The Art classes service both the iunior and senior high school students. These classes include sketching, painting, basket weaving and ce- ramics. There are tryout courses on the iunior high level as well as advanced classes on the senior high school level. The Vocal division of the department includes voice classes on the iunior high school level, a Junior Glee Club and a Senior Glee Club. The Orchestra division is limited to string classes on both the iunior and senior high school level and guidance services The function of the guidance service of River Rouge Schools is to help each individual in the school community to attain self-direction as fast and as far as his mental, emotional, and social abilities permit. As the counselor works with teachers, students, and parents to implement this service he helps with educational and vocational planning, personal and social adfustment, and oversees the keeping of records that ensure progress in each area. Thus the counselor must be a person who is open minded, ethically conscious, and professionally trained to such a degree that he can meet his responsibilities. A counselor keeps abreast with the thinking of faculties and has on hand data to help them make the best use of their time with groups. He helps community groups interpret the school, and helps the school be aware of the wishes of language arts department Language is the means by which man communicates with man. River Rouge High School has a widely varied program in the language arts. To iuniors and seniors, it offers one year of work in journal- ism. Under the careful supervision of Mr. Roger Hannon, the second semester class puts out the Rouge Recorder. The Vigilant Annual Staff, composed of members of the graduating classes each year, works under the capable guid- ance of Mr. Andrew Rasmussen to produce an outstanding year book. library Since 1921, the River Rouge High School library has served both the city and the schools. Because of the new city library, many questions have arisen about what is going to happen to the High School library. Every high school is required to have a library, therefore the new library will belong to the city and our school library will be for the use of high school students only. The obiectives of the school library are to participate effectively in the school program as it strives to meet the needs of pupils, teachers, parents and other community school Mr. Jack Wise, Miss M. Anne Parks, Miss Dagny Pladsen, and Mr. Harry Nirier receive thanks for their efforts. positions, For students who plan to attend college, it is highly recommended that they take typewriting and, if possible, shorthand. There is a growing need for more boys to enroll in courses in the department, Knowledge of business courses offers a greater oppportunity for promotions and serves as a stepping stone to advancement for executive positions. Each year many of the boys and girls are employed by local business establishments, as well as many business organi- zations and banks in the Down River Area. a String Orchestra on the senior high school level. Band instrument classes are started in the 4th grade on Song Flutes. Instruments are substituted in the beginning of the fifth grade, and these students continue on into junior high school. Students are transferred on completion of these classes into Senior High School Band. The units that are used for public use upon request are the Girl's Glee Club, the String Orchestra, and the High School Band. In addition to this there are numerous soloists and ensembles that are available for public programs. the community. He helps the student find a way of meeting his needs in constructive ways. The guidance services follow the student wherever he goes. Placement on iobs is frequently a part of helping people ad- iust to an adult role in life. So counselors respond gladly to calls from employment personnel either for referrals or for help with specific iob placement. A student should know his counselor and seek his help. He will find that he can make choices that cause less conflict and worry if he has an experienced adult to help him find which way to go. The counselor keeps in strict confidence the problems that are discussed with him. This respect and trust should help individuals feel free to use the guidance services whenever they can profit by them. This year two courses in speech have been open to inter- ested students. Mrs. Barbara Wilcox began the program, which Mr.A. Rasmussen has carried on. They have emphasized dramatics in its many phases. As the world seems to shrink in size, the knowledge of the language and culture of other countries becomes in- creasingly important. Under the careful leadership of Miss Frances Mishica, students may learn to read, write, and speak Spanish, French, and Latin, as they study the people who use these languages as their native tongue. members, to provide boys and girls with library materials and services appropriate and most meaningful in their growth and development as individuals, and to stimulate and guide pupils in all phases of their reading that they may find necessary enioyment and satisfaction. A famous librarian once said, lf you want to be a librarian, don't come in here and tell me you like books, tell me you like people. To help people is the only real obiective of a librarian. Books are but his tool to aid humanity. departments Miss Wheater, Head of the Mathematics Department, mathematics department Fundamental logic and reasoning power are desirable traits in any type of vocation. A sound basis in these abilities is presented by the Mathematics Department. Algebra, plane geometry, trigonometry, solid geometry, and a one semester mathematics refresher course complete the high school mathe- matics cycle. Headed by Miss Wheater, this department is one of the physical education department The physical education program in our high school is planned carefully to provide effective and abundant oppor- tunities for every student to explore and to participate individually and collectively in a wide variety of activities. These activities are selected on a basis of their ability to enable the individual to recognize and to realize the eventual attainment of a high degree of mental alertness, emotional science department General science courses are offered to all ninth grade students. They give the student the fundamentals of astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, and physics. In addition to the ordinary learning process, demonstration experiments are presented to illustrate and emphasize important scientific principles. This course enables the student to discover his scientific interest for later study. Laboratory courses in biology, chemistry, and physics are social studies department The Social Studies Department at River Rouge High School consists of courses in unified, English, and social studies, as well as individual courses in American history, world history, American government, sociolO9Y, and economics. Everyone is required to have at least one and one-half years in this department before they are issued a diploma. Particular stress is paid to current problems. We feel that both teacher and class have a right to look at controversial issues as well as historical events of the past. There should be impartial and cool discussions of these issues. Effort is made to help our students become conversant with vocational department The industrial arts and homemaking program plays an im- portant part in meeting certain personal needs of the youth of River Rouge High School. The very nature of the work requires active participation in a program which releases the tensions and strains of concentrated attention required by certain learning situations. As far as- the need for a feeling of success is concerned, there is probably no other school subiect which comes as near to making it possible for all students to attain a fair measure of success as those in industrial arts and homemaking. Ideally, each member of the class will be working on a different proiectg and, if planning and guidance has been wise, each one will be working on something within his ability to complete successfully. foreign languages idivision of language arts department! The study of foreign. languages is a gateway to better understanding of our neighbors. We write letters, visit museums, attend the theatre for productions such as ballet, musical concerts, special films, etc. We send Care packages to orphanages in foreign lands. To celebrate Christmas,,the French III and Spanish Ili classes hold open house for parents, most progressive in the school. New books and magazines are available for an industrious student. Generally fast moving, the courses cover the subiect matter completely and adequately. Mathematics is a contributing factor in industry. Applicable in pure sciences and engineering, it is used in all types of clerical work as well. There is an increasing demand for students versed in mathematics in industry and business. stability, social poise, and physical fitness. These highly desirable traits make it possible for each individual to accomplish. more things better with less effortp consequently, our physical education program makes many significant and worthwhile contributions to the total educational process of each student. open to senior high students. In these courses the student learns scientific facts primarily by the experimental method. The laboratories are fully supplied with individual equipment for each student as well as with demonstration materials for class use. These courses help develop in the student a scientific attitude, self-reliance, and an understanding and appreciation of our modern scientific achievement. nicer things in our American Heritage. We try to visualize many of the fruits of our democracy. We often show current movies to aid our pupils in obtaining a broader concept of our way of life. indirectly, good citizenship is one of the aims of all curric- ula but more especially that of our department. Students learn what we expect of good citizens. They learn about local, state, and national government, and some students actually practice government as members of our Student Council. The program here in River Rouge High School also extends to contribute to the meeting of certain needs of children in the vocational field. Our program provides tryout oppor- tunities where some of the important occupational fields may be sampled. The student may use the tools and processes of industry and is given the opportunity to study and select from the trades and occupations of adult society. In the l2th grade some placements in part-time work take place. In many cases these are the students' permanent iobs when they graduate and go to work full time. lt is hoped that the program for the boys and girls of River Rouge will be expanded in the near future by adding more facilities in a needed building expansion to the present department. former students, and college students by presenting a program in the respective languages.
