The band's heavy schedule this year included playing for eight football games this fall, a com- bined concert with the grade school instrumental program on May 21, and a Mid-Winter concert. One feature at the Mid-Winter Concert, given on March 25, was the 'fWarsaw Concerto with Mr. 0I'l'l5 Fred Williams at the piano. The playing of a musical comedy selection, Me and Juliet , with tenor and soprano soloists from Detroit's radio and television studios, was another feature attrac- tion at the annual performance. Three band members received honors in the Solo Ensemble Festival with one first and two second division ratings. River Rouge High is very proud of them for it knows they deserved the honors. 0.29 r 332.gif 1? ai, I-, Q: Carpe- ? f f , Hy , , '. , ji lg ,717 L ,- I C N-v Row 1: Roger Loughrige, Marshall Hoshaw, Noel Myricks. The Christmas and Spring Concerts given by the Glee Club are two of the main events everyone looks forward to each year. Miss Carolyn Wise, the director, works patiently and diligently with the girls to perfect the songs and various skits which suprise the audience at each performance. Such songs as Calm as the Night, Gypsy Choral Fantasie, Birthday of a King, and There's a Song in the Air are a few of the highlights enjoyed this year. The Glee Club also participated in the annual performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Ann Arbor at Easter time. YXJ igi ...t i p L rf gif Row 1: Richard Woolley, Harry Lozon, Mardor. The organization consists of members who have been elected by a faculty committee because they excel in all of these fields of endeavor. Being a member of the National Honor Society is the highest interscholastic attain- ment that one can achieve in the River Rouge High School. The Honor Society assists the community in many ways. They have ushered at all of the Downriver Community Concerts and have assisted local organ- izations. They have charge of the bulletin and announcements boards in high school and assist with the ushering at band concerts. Main social events are the dinners given at the close of each semester in honor of the graduating seniors. Other social events include the dinner given by the Kiwanis Club in honor of our members, baseball games and picnics. Each member, upon being initiated into this society, receives a membership pin, an engraved membership card, and an engraved certificate of member- ship. The National Honor Society is under the capable co-sponsorship of Miss Hartsig and Miss Wheater. -49- NAT IO NA HONOR OCIETY Ji ix S7 E S KJ 4 A Row 1: Margaret Shaw, Shirley Futrell, Marlene stiehl, Carol Berg, Susan Harrelson, Tressa Onu- Wilson, Miss Marion Youngquist. It was organized for the girls who have worked hard to earn their athletic points, but have failed to meet the requirements of the R Club. Points may be earned by taking part in any offered sport. 200 points are re- quired before girls can become members. A girl is considered an active member on payment of her dues and may attend all meetings and social gatherings that the club may have. Its major activities are basketball and baseball. Its minor activities are touch football, fieldball, tennis, volleyball, bowling and badminton. A certain number of points is given to the members who take part in the major as well as minor activities. A chenille block letter R is given to those who earn 750 points. A G.A.A. pin is given for the earning of 1500 points. 2,000 points entitles the member to a G.A.A. emblem which is somewhat like a school letter. Dues must be paid in full before the girls are eligible for awards. .51- R Row 1: Mr. Roger Carrington, Kenneth Montroy, Helen Carevich, Katherine Doulas, Dolores Jones, Nancy Anderson, Virginia Morsette, Barbara Brown, Joan Nicola, Janet Spears, Mr. Roger Hannon. As the records show, this year's varsity football team had a very hard schedule to play, but the team improved greatly over the 1952 squad. The first game of the season brought together the Panthers from River Rouge and Red Raiders from Ecorse. This being the first game of the season, both teams were nervous, and the game was won by the team that got the breaks, and Ecorse had most of the breaks. For the next game, Romulus journeyed to River Rouge in hopes of taking the Panthers easily. The Panthers played a very good game and tied Romulus. The following four games were lost by the Panthers to some very powerful football teams. When the Belleville game was played, the Panthers looked as if they had gained some experience from the games they had lost. They downed Belleville 24 to 0. This was probably the best game of the season for the Panthers. The last game of the season was a thriller with the Panthers leading Melvindale in the last minute, but a minute was all it took for Melvindale to score a touchdown and beat River Rouge 20 to 19. Next season should be a much better one for the Panthers as they will have seven regular players back from this year's team. .66- Row 1: E. Griffin, W. Tucker, C. White, C. J. Adams, G. Williams, B. This year's team was champion of the Twin Valley Conference for the fourth time in succession. It also brought backthe championship trophy from Alpena, Michigan, where it competed against eight Class UB teams. The two games that the Panthers lost during the regular season were avenged later on in the year. The Panthers also ex- tended the home-floor winning streak to two years in a row. This means the Panthers haven't lost a game in the River Rouge gym in two years. As the records show, the Panthers had a very rough schedule this year, but they took their games in their stride. They played five Class A teams, and they won all of these games except the first Catholic Central game. They beat two of these Class A teams twice. On March 19, in the semi-finals of the State Tournament, the Panthers beat Ludington in a very thrilling game, 54 to 52. March 20 proved to be the great day for the Panthers as they beat Holland Christian, 56 to 53,for the State Championship, the highest award any team can achieve. The way Great Lakes goes at it-starting with the ore and working it through to the finished forms- steelmaking calls for substantial facilities, even by the standards of the mighty automotive industry. We have our own blast-furnaces, bessemers and open hearths, blooming mills, hot and cold rolling mills and merchant mills. Recent expansion has included a huge new blast fur- nace, a new slabbing mill, and two new bessemers. Coming up in the next few months are seventy new coking ovens, another new blast furnace, additional finishing facilities, and all the extra handling equip- ment it takes to make things work together. Through this integration of operations, Great Lakes has built -flexibility and availability unique among steel suppliers. Through this expansion, we mean to take good care of many customers in many fields, while we carry on our service as a dependable first source for the automotive industry. It's difficult to picture! Electric power serves so faithfully we just take it for granted. Edison's incandescent lamp, heralding the birth of modern electric service, finally becamef more -than a dream 75 years ago. To help turn this dream into reality, other men provided the finances Edison needed. Their joint achievement is an example of how financial riskjtaking and individual ingenuity combine ,to the benefit of all people. But our present way of living is only the beginning. Electricity promises for the future still greater marvels and better service. It requires men and women with many skills to provide this service.
