River Forest Jr.-Sr. High School presents INGOT 1980 Robert Marszalek Book by 1980 Ingot Staff Principals Donald Tippett Published by Josten ’s American Yearbook Company Starring John Newton Photography by Mike Craigin and Root Studios Faculty And Students Of River Forest Advisor Mr. Davee Muir Editor-in-Chief Peggy Glennie Layout Editor Art Editor Financial Editor Copy Editor Linda Kallok Kathy Grdgon Jeanette Bowlin Carolyn Cutsinger with Glenda Reed Bob Norman Mara Ibeth Berrios Terri Kovel Based on the Characters of River Forest Jr.-Sr. High School In Association with the Hobart Township Community School Corporation. Originally Produced at River Forest Jr.-Sr. High School Indiana-Huber Blvd. Hobart, Indiana Vol. 21 Robert Henning, Executive Producer Dedication The 1980 INGOT is dedicated to the senior class and Mrs. Dorothy Zakutansky. Mrs. Zakutansky began working in the River Forest cafeteria in 1972. She worked part-time as courier and ticket taker until two years ago when she took the job of cafe- teria coordinator. Mrs. Zakutansky began working to sup- port her daughter, Anita, and sons, John and Jerry, after her husband’s death twelve years ago. She was a good mother to her children and a good friend to the students. She was always friendly and pleasant. She took part in school activities and had an abundance of school spirit. She is sincerely missed by the students and faculty of River Forest. Synopsis Of Scenes (Table Of Contents) Act I People 6 Act II Academics 66 Act III Activities 82 Act IV Sports 108 Producers Ads 140 Who’s Who Index 159 Epilogue Closing 166 3 The lights dim. The orchestra is warm- ing up. As the curtain rises, you expect to see a well known actor in a famous Broad- way play. But, throughout the pages, the scene becomes more familiar. There are no curtains to rise, actors to perform, or play to be seen. The curtains and scenery be- come lockers and desks. The performers aren’t really actors, but are friends and faculty members. As this book goes on, the more vivid and familiar the memories; that special dance, the game we almost won, the seniors anx- iously awaiting graduation, the under- classmen counting the days until summer. Forest These are all memories, even if not re- corded in print or picture. The purpose of theatrical plays is to move people emotionally. They help you see things in a different light, whether se- rious in view or amusing. Yearbooks are similiar to plays. Yearbooks depict the happy times and the sad times. They show you who you shared those times with, and who made them possible. The theatre is constantly changing to the times, and so are the people at River Forest. Television tries to depict the changing times with shows and the the- atre with plays. This yearbook tries to keep the times from changing too quickly. The decline also caused changes for two other teachers. Miss Diane Kubiak, who taught reading classes is now teaching English classes, and Miss Jeri Gooldy, who always taught in the junior high, was assigned to teaching both junior high and senior high students. And too, after the departure of Mrs. Wanda Strange, Davee Muir became the advi- sor for the school’s yearbook and newspa- per classes. 69 Top left: Linda Martin stabs the bugs on her paper. One first oc- cured when the team had two runners in the top ten in sectionals. The team placing sec- Carlos Garza ond in sectionals was another. The third achievement took place when they went to re- gional for the first time. Dewey v For the third year in a row the River Forest Varsity Basketball team had a 70% freethrow shooting average. Dew- ey Mayfield was out- standing. He averaged 22 points per game. Two major victories for the team were against Ho- bart and Hebron. Ho- Dominates The Court bart was defeated in overtime by a score of 47-45 and Hebron, an away game, was sound- ly defeated by a 65-54 score. The injuries of Jeff Moore, David Kirk- bride, and Dave Thor- mann affected the team’s performance. Bart Bartolini, who was one of last year’s start- ing five, suffered a ma- jor injury which ren- dered him unable to play. Two of the team’s weaknesses were re- bounding and tur- novers. Their season ended with a 6-15 re- cord. 120 The varsity basketball team included: Coach Burleson, Coach Leonard, Dave Thor- mann, Dewey Mayfield, Jeff Moore, Billy Knarian, man- ager Jeff Dotson, John Han- kins, Darris Harrell, Dave Kirkbride, Gary Mathews, and Head Coach Samuel. The River Forest J.V. basketball team had a season of seven wins and thirteen losses. The J.V. displayed much im- provement and worked as a team. Garry Uhles, Richard Stover, and Troy Verduzco were outstanding. The freshman “A” team had two wins and four losses. Tom Ord- way led in scoring. He averaged ten points per game, Chuck Hall, the second leading scorer, with an average of 8 points per game, led in rebounding. He averaged 8 re- bounds per game. On team “B”, Jerome Ru- kavina was the leading rebounder and scorer, with 81 points and 49 re- bounds. He was a defi- nite asset to the team’s two victories. The team played in the Hobart Holiday Tourney for the first time with a 5-7 record going in. Coach Kay Polk said that the Varsi- ty wasn’t as consistant as she would have liked. Versatile John Hos- kins was outstanding as forward, center and guard. Turnovers were probably the reason for most of the losses, ac- cording to Coach Klarer. The guards were exceptionally short and full court presses hurt the team. A majority of games were lost by just a few points. “The record could just as easily been 9-4”, stat- ed Coach Klarer. A weak defense lead to the eighth grades’ losing record of 1-12. However, according to Coach Whiting the team improved throughout the season. In fact, in their last game, they scored 50 points, which is approxiamentely 20 more than last year’s average. The team also maintained a 65% free throw average. Rick Si- zemore and Larry Mills were outstanding as guard and center. 7th Grade front: Sam Ro- meo, Gilbert Vallejo, Perry Mills, David Verduzco, Ra- mon Uribe. Sheila 55 Westerlund, Tina 55 Westmoreland. Rich 55 Whatley, Janet 55 Yost, Bill 55 164 As we started, we looked upon an empty theatre which began to unfold into the events of one year. Now, we once again look upon an empty theatre in which we reflect on that past year, the triumphs and tragedies, the highs and lows. But as we reflect, we also look ahead. Each year al- ways brings challenges and surprises to us. Many take advantage of these chal- lenges, many do not. Education is one step in helping each and every one of us take the fullest advantage we can of life, to make things work in our favor instead of against us. As the curtain falls, it does so on a way of life for many of the students. The seniors are now graduated and ready to become capable adults who help mold the charac- ter of our world. Eighth graders mature as they enter the prospects of their freshmen year, ready yet wary of their last four years of schooling. But in life, the curtain also rises. As we grow and mature, the dramatic pretenses of life ahead give us dreams for the fu- ture, which will, hopefully, become the pleasant memories of the past. The intent of the 1980 INGOT is to help us relive some of our hopes for the future, give us a con- stant memory of our past year, and possi- bly set some new dreams and goals for everyone in the future. For three years I’ve seen the River Forest yearbook evolve into a symbol of pride for the students of this school. Trying to depict all the events of a school year and all the people involved with each event is not an easy job. The fairness, rationality, and creativeness that goes into a yearbook cannot be acquired through only one person. It takes a team of highly dedicated students, who want to create something that everyone can be proud of. We’ve been lucky enough to have students who know this school inside and out, have the capability to put together a yearbook that fairly represents us and all that we’ve done throughout the year. I’d like to extend my appreciation to the faculty, students, and administration of River Forest; Root photographers; Robert Henning and Josten’s American Yearbook; and above all to Da- vee Muir, all of whom have given their undying support to the yearbook and the staff. To Jeanette, Carolyn, Linda, Kathy, Terri, John, Bob, Mara Ibeth, Mike, and Glenda (Shark), I give you my deepest thanks and a hearty congratulations for a job well done. Thanks again, Peggy Glennie, Editor, INGOT It is impossible to show my appreciation to all who were in- volved with the production of this annual. However, I would like to acknowledge the students whose hard work and determina- tion created it. My special thanks are extended to John, Mara Ibeth, Robert, and Glenda for putting up with my constant de- mands for revision; to Carolyn for her exactness with tedious layouts; to Kathy for her skillful and precise artwork; to Linda and Terri for their ability to lighten the numerous monotonous tasks with their humor; to Mike for his tireless chasing and at- tempts to achieve the “right” picture; and finally to Peggy and Jeanette whose loyalty, devotion, and diligence have made the 1980 INGOT an annual that I hope everyone can be proud of. Thanks Staff, Mr. Muir
