m ♦ INGOT 1978 River Forest High School Indiana -Huber Blvd. Hobart, Indiana Hobart Township Community School Corporation Vol. 19 Dedication We dedicate this book to the Senior Class of River Forest High School and to Michael Duane Cooper, in particular, a member of the Class of ' 78. Mike died on January 14, 1978. His death was a great shock and a loss. One of his classmates, Vickie Palmer, wrote the following tribute: Michael Duane Cooper 1959-1978 Saturday, January 14, was an ordinary day for nearly everyone in New Chicago . The bitter cold had subsided for a brief time, and very little did Mike Cooper know that his hours were slowly being counted down. No one will ever know the many thoughts that ran through Mike ' s mind that day, but little do I believe thoughts of his fate entered his mind. His life was supposed to begin fresh in only one week. He had successfully made it through twelve years of school. He never knew life other than that of his school days , nor will he ever . At 18, very few think of death. It seems that you ' re thinking so much about the future that the idea is absurd. The atmosphere at River Forest seems to have changed a great deal as I walk through the halls. The seniors have suffered a great loss and tragedy in their realization that life on the outside can appear cruel and unmerciful . But by Mike ' s death we, as individuals, have taken a great step in maturing and in understanding. Sitting back and wondering why solves nothing; we must move on as life moves on. Soon we will give way to the fresh warm days of spring, and the shock of Mike ' s death will be lost in a new generation of time, although the wind will never cease to carry memories of him . Jamie Estill set two school records in returning a punt for 90 yds . for a touchdown versus Chicago Mendel Catholic and in returning an interrupted pass for a 96-yd. touchdown against Gary Wirt. In his 4-yr. reign as head football coach, Halaschak compiled a 9-28 record. Two school team records were set in 1974 1975: the least number of points given up (1975 record still stands at 102 pts.). Mr. Halaschak produced the first and only All-State player in Paul Loving, named First Team All-State Defensive Tackle in 1974. Two All-State Honorable Mentions went to Matt Yakab (1974) and Garry Moore (1975). Loving, Moore, and Yakab, with several others, also earned All-Area Honors under Coach Halaschak. R.F. their help with our 1978 INGOT: Mrs. Pat Lindemann, Josten ' s American Yearbook Company Representative, who always came when we needed her . The staff and students of River Forest High School, for their cooperation and support. Root Studios, who gave us such thorough coverage and all our photographic supplies . Deby Shield and Tom Shuler, of the Yearbook Staff, for their work on ads, sports, and photography, respectively. A very special thanks to Jeanette Bowlin and Peggy Glennie, the two Yearbook Staff members who organized the book, wrote the copy, and did the layouts for almost all the book. Jeanette and Peggy returned to school after June 2 and worked six full days more to complete the book. Without Jeanette and Peggy, there would have been no 1978 INGOT. Violet Kosanovich, Faculty Adviser
