He has kept the student body running smoothly in spite of the many conflicts arising from the construction of the new addition. We are sure as each one of us looks back on our high school days, we shall never forget his hearty laugh echoing throughout the corridors. The Major has been a good friend to us all, and shall be remembered for a long time to come. Mr. Wiles, we are very proud to dedicate the 1958 Chieftain to you. 2 . . . M .. 1 Rittrnan High School obtained some relief in the 1957- 58 school year from the growing pains which afflict most school systems. With the opening of the new addition to the building, new facilities became available for the Science, Industrial Arts and Home Economics departments. As these departments moved into new quarters, additional classrooms were made available for other classes. Rittman operates under a first class charter from the State Department of Edu- cation and is also accredited by the North Central Association. Rittman has good classroom facilities, excellent instruction and a fairly compre- hensive curriculum. In the pages to follow, we would like to present some glimpses into some of the various parts of the curriculum which make a large part of the student life. Rittman High has classes in . . . MATH AND SCIENCE . - 41. s e Math and Science have always been a strong point of the curriculum of Rittman High. With the new facilities becoming available this school year, these departments have become even a stronger point of the life at R.H.S. Classes are available in Algebra, Plane Geometry, Solid Geometry, and Trigo- nometry and are taught by Miss Beattie. The Science section offers Biology and Chemistry and Physics beyond the re- quired General Science course. Mr. Force teaches the Biology classes and Mr. Miller teaches the other science classes. The commercial classes of Rittman High are usually filled to overflowing. Most of the graduates from this program go on to office clerical jobs in the area. Regular classes are conducted in Typing I and II, Steno- graphy I and II, Office Practice and Bookkeeping by Mr. Turner. The commercial department moved this year into the rooms vacated by the Home Economics classes. These re- modeled facilities provide excellent quarters for this vo- cational training. 594' up 10 X la Stolrzfus, working, and mechanical drawing. Hauenstein. The purpose of the club is to acquaint the students interested in the teaching field with every phase of teaching, to develop character qualities necessary to good teachers, and to develop student I leadership. Since its beginning in Rittman in 1955 the organization has been one of the most active and best attended of student activities. Programs are of a varied nature and include skits on teaching, reports on famous educators, films dealing with teaching, and discussions. Lois Fry is the current presi- dent, and the membership totals forty-three this year. The Future Homemalcers of America is organized for pupils who are studying or have had classes in Home Economics while in high school. lt is affiliated with the state F.H.A. and also the national F.l-l.A. It offers opportunity for the further develop- ment of pupil initiative in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. Among the activities for the year are a very successful candy sale at Open House, a caroling party at Christmas. delivery of gift baskets at Christmas time, a Get-to-gether Party with our mothers, Valentines for Vets project, skating party. a Junior Red Cross project and a picnic to encl the year. Part of it is fun and feasting. The fun began in September with a spaghetti feast at Twila Talbot's. Feast No. 2 was the Roman banquet held just before the holidays so that a Roman and an American Christmas might be appropriately compared. Plays, talks, and Christmas-carol- singing highlighted this affair. Also, there was a Roman wed- ding with Cynthia Calabria and Bob Heames in the bride and groom roles. Art Hall, club president, was master of ceremonies and jackie Grieves was crowned magistra bibendif' The 47 members of this club made many outstanding projects this year proving that this dead language is still Very much alive today. SPANISH, Too Spanish club is an organization made up of the six girls who are now taking Spanish II. For entertainment the club gives parties, generally once every six weeks period, which are held in the homes of the members. The expense of the party is paid by the girls who miss the most words in the vocabulary race. This is intended to encourage the students to make perfect vocabulary scores. This year's annual Christmas party was held at the home of Judy Nehls and the usual custom of coming dressed as Spanish senoritas was one of the main high-lights of the evening. The custom of breaking the pinata was observedg the pinata, which we dubbed Cada, was to represent a beautiful senorita filled with candy. The pinata was finally broken by Jerry Vaughn, and a mad scramble for the candy followed. But the Rittman High Majorettes still seem to manage to step smartly down the field. In addition to working with the band, they spend many extra hours practicing. Lois Bauman has been drum majorette for two years. To keep the lovely white rabbit fur from getting matted in a sudden shower or the bright red velveteen from getting wrinkled on a crowded bus is a tough job, but these gals always come through with a winning smile. NlE...lVlA. . . MAA MOO Me...ma...maa...mo...moo. Astranger passing the music room would think that the choir was singing a foreign tongue. Actually they are only warm- ing up. Under the capable direction of Miss Swope, the chorus not only performed at Open House, P.T.A. Christ- mas Program, and May Day. but they also presented a Palm Sunday Vesper Service, various assemblies and chapel programs in addition to singing for civic organizations. 28 Every March the Rittman High School chorus goes to the district contests at Kent State University, at which time they are required to sing two numbers. If the highest rating is received they then go to Columbus for the state contests. The entire chorus met three times a week with the boys meeting on Tuesdays and the girls on Thursdays. Miss Swope also directs the elementary choir. It consists of students in the fourth. fifth, and sixth grades from The First Street Grade School and The West Hill Grade School. This group consists of Covenia Thompson, Lauretta Beery, Jane Emch, Carolyn Lichty, Sue Wilson, Mary Lou Brown, and accompanist, Carol Shook. The various ensembles also play a very im- portant singing role in the music department. These groups change from year to year with tryouts early in September to determine the members. The Six Teens consists of five juniors and one senior with Carol Shook, a junior, as their accompanist. They sang for the Senior Class Play, Thanksgiving Assembly, Open House in addition to other school activities, and church and civic or- ganizations. Lauretta, Carol, Covenia, Carolyn and Mary Lou are veterans of last year's girls' sextet. The Silhouettes consists of two freshmen, four sophomores, a junior and a senior. They also sang at the Senior Class Play, Thanksgiving Assembly and at church and civic groups. Connie, Harold, John Karlen and john Kunkler are two year mem- bers of a mixed ensemble. The Boys' Quartet sang at the Junior Class Play, Open House and other activities, both in and out of school. It consists of two seniors, a junior, and a freshman. Everett Beery is a four year mem- ber and jim Lambert is a two year member of this group. These three ensembles were combined at the P.T.A. Christmas Program to form a small choir. Each group also goes to contest every March at which time they are required to sing two num- bers. This mixed ensemble consists of Gerry Goffinet, john Karlen, Harold Bauman, john Kunkler, Darlene First, Connie Rhonemus, Pat Trogdon, Pat McComas. Willoughby's three old maid aunts, Aunt Louise, Aunt Hester, and Aunt Olga, were played by Sue Roth, Betty Blosser and Carolyn Lichty. They fed him codliver oil - and turnips, made him practice the piano regularly, arranged his dates for him, and planned all three of his careers Cthere were 3 auntsb. Connie Rhonemus played the completely unexcitingn girl next door, named Marybelle, whom the aunts insisted he was to take to the graduation dance. Mary Lou Brown and Carol Shook were twins Cjanet and Trudy? in search of a date for the dance - he could have his choice. Of course, he ended up taking Covenia Thompson, the Carol Martin he had been secretly admiring for 4 years after Richard Williams and Richard Yoho I as Mike and Stanleyj took Marybelle and Janet off his hands. And Aunt Louise, holding up Inner Willy's empty suit of long underwear, brought down the curtain with Willoughby,'v'hat on earth is this suit of long underwear doing here on the living room floor? The behind the scenes force included Nadine Brodbeck, prompter, John Francis and Richard Armbrust, stage managers, Sue Wilson and Barbara Larch, make-up. artistsg and Mrs. Steiner, director. 54 X ?
