Cfostilow has made an outstanding record in good school administration and in building a sound curriculum. Mr. Costilow obtained his BS. Degree from Denison University in Granville. Ohio, and his Masters Degree from the University of Illinois. lle has done graduate work beyond his Master's at Wttsliington University, University of Missouri, and at Colorado State College of Education. A new addition to the principals staff this year is Miss Georgia Tripp, a 1955 graduate of Ritenour Senior High. Wliile in school, Georgia, .. who was elected to the National Honor Society, E -,,,s .. was an active member of the Melaureus staff .tw where she served as business manager. She Jw., is played on the class hockey and basketball teams , ,'S-if 25 has 4 gs' and was a member of the R.G.A.A. ' 0 SECRETARIES MISS ELLEN GREER, Secretary to the Principal: Easily said, but what a job! Every time those ghastly report cards are issued, Ellen makes an aver- age of 35,000 entries. Ellen also keeps the attendance records. Anyone who has been in the office before school has seen her busily distributing ink over a rapidly diminishing pile of blue slips. Turning a keen eye on excuses, she often has a terrific seventh hour. Ellen spends much of her time keeping students away from her typewriter. She fears they will get the machine into the habit of misspelling words, and vows that many in the past have developed this tendency. Since Ellen is so easy to find, she is often asked for advice. Her suggestions are not always what the students wish to hear, but they are always truthful and usually correct. Ellen is not only the secretary, but also a friend to the students, Her help in extracurricular activities is often indispensible. V-Qnm., .9 su., 'x 4xir' V . f . S . The 'Si-S6 Sophomore Class this year is the largest ever at Ritenour with more than five hundred stu- dents. Last year with the building of the new Hoech Junior High, two Student Councils were necessary. Starting the year at Ritenour were Sue Crain, Presi- dentg Shirley Robinson, Secretary, and Denny Miller, Treasurer. ln January Keith Price was elected new President at Ritenour. Sue Crain was the first Presif dent of the new Junior High. Nathan Paul, the only other freshman officer, served as Tigeasurer the re- mainder of the year. John Lautermilch and Bill Scerba, Co-Captains of the Freshman football team, ended the season with a 5-l record. Other energetic players were Dave Stokes, George Otterman, Ron Morgan, Harry Gur- ley, Darryl Brooks, Ray Petty, and Denny Miller. The basketball team, really on their toes, won ten out of thirteen games. Harry Gurley, Ron Morgan, and John Lautermilch were some of the high scorers. The Freshmen were of great help on the Varsity track and wrestling teams. Dave Stokes, Joe Seiter, and George Otterman lettered in track, Rich Butts and Nathan Paul lettered in wrestling. Rich Butts was state champion. Looking forward with much enthusiasm to our Sophomore year, we elected George Otterman, Pres- ident, Ron Moe Albert, Vice Presidentg and Harry Gurley, Secretary-Treasurer of our class. For the third straight year our B team won championship by not losing a single game. Bill Scerba served as Captain. Others of the fighting eleven were Ronnie Wfilliams, Gilbert Compton, Ray Petty, Darryl Brooks, John Hess, Ron Albert, George Otterman, John Lautermilch, Harry Gurley, and Ron Morgan. Rich Butts, Pat Holmes and Tracy Sherman repre- sented us on the wrestling team. Judy Briner, escorted by Captain, Ray Wfilson, was the only Sophomore on the football court. Connie Theodorow, Nancy Matthews, Dot Hart- bauer, Judy Briner, Judy Ohler, Jo Ann Graf, Nancy Lynn, Judy Curry, Sue Bassman, and Doris Gerst were some of the girls who made the class hockey team. Judy Ohler and Dot Hartbauer went on and made Varsity. Some of the Sophomore reporters for the Pepper Box were Judy Renshaw, Kay Kohlbusch, Sherry Yadon, Joe Seiter, Roberta Dunham, and Judy Cook. Chosen for popularity candidates were Ron Mor- gan, Harry Gurley, Doris Caito, and Sue Crain. Thus ends the history of the Sophomore Class of of 5 First row: Dave XX'illiams, Doug Scott. There are many students who participate, if not as team members, as spectators. Included in the wide variety of sports for boys are football, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and track. For girls there are hockey, basketball, volleyball, and softball. Participation of students in these sports is proving to be a good method for developing good citizens. We can surely be proud of the achievements our teams have made and the part they have played in school life. 3 th iff QR! 0 Wwwdtq 'kdm O 2 7mm O 'feczmc The 1955 Huskies were the most successful since the 1952 thampions. Led by Coaches john Moore and Palma Hunter, the team erased all school storing records en route to a six won, three lost, record and a third place in the Suburban League. The season started brilliantly with a 13-7 victory over a powerful Assumption eleven. In daylight games the Huskies were upset by Country Day, 15-7, and l'niversity City, after a scoreless first half, pushed over two touchdowns in the setoncl to win, 15-O. At home for five successive night games, they unleashed one of the distritt's most powerful attacks, led by Quarterback Bob Burda's passing and the hard running of D. C. Look, Manford Crawford. jerry Schmidt. and Bill Loveless. The third annual Turkey Bowl game was the closest in the series and again one spoke of the Wrtgrun XX'heel gained an orange and black stripe as the Huskies won 7-6. The third quarter saw Bob Burda connect with Ronnie Seago for the touchdown. This was followed by an extra point pass to Cap- tain Ray Wfilson. Normandy intercepted a pass and went 70 yards with it, but failed on the extra point as the hard-charging Ritenour line blocked the pass attempt. Wfilson and Burda were selected as All-Suburban players with jack Kirkpatrick and Manford Crawford given Honorable Mention. Wfilson was 'named to the District second team. jim Marsden was chosen as Captain of the 1956 team. l3EI.OW'fFirst row: Aaron Franzen, Charles Hartzell, Bob XX'ithmann, Ron Se-ago, Bob Burda. This year the team lost a few bouts, but gained revenge as they overwhelmed all league opponents by, very decisive scores. The only hazardously close match was the 22-21 victory over the Ferguson Comets, who were undefeated by any other team in the Suburban League. Besides win- ning the Suburban League title, the grapplers also took first place in a quadrangular tournament held at River- view Gardens High School. This was the first tourna- ment of what is hoped will be an annual affair. As the yearbook goes to press, the members of the team are preparing for the State Tournament to be held at Maple- wood. The 1955-56 version of the Ritenour Huskies led by their hustling Captain, Arnold jellison, started the season off right with a decisive 66-so victory over Central of the Public High League. In this game Captain jellison started the fans talking as he dropped in 33 points for a new scoring record for Ritenour. The team was given an added boost from their new Coach, Lee Engert, when he called for the boys to work out in the summer months for experience. This year's squad was one of the tallest in Ritenour's history with Allen Howard stand- ing 6'5 and Arnold jellison at 6'3 . Through the years some of these have grown from obscure clubs with a few members into large organizations. Outside activities give a student a chance to show and develop individualism. For this reason extra-curricular activities are very ima portant in the program of any school. Long after the students are graduated from school, the effect of participation in organi- zations will remain in their individualism and achievement of their goals. Margaret Curtis, Kathy Ifrnst, QBLSINIISS S'l'Alilij, We believe the 1955-56 Melaureus to be the best ever printed. This is because of the efforts of the staff, writers, typists, and artists. Some of the people who have added their efforts to the staff are Judy Poindexter, Carol Dudley, Barbara Bradley, jack Williford, and David Wfendt. There have been radical changes in this year's book. We have added a full page of color, a summer supple- ment, and pictorial advertisements. Wliile the majority of the students were enjoying their summer, Christmas, and other vacations, the yearbook staff was working to make this year's book the best. The following people are responsible for this Melaureus: Lucille Brown, Editor-in-Chief, Ellender Brown, Production Manager, Velma Butler, Literary Editor, Tom Alsop, Ad- vertising Managerg Larry Lomax, Assistant Advertising Man- ager, Kathy Ernst and Margaret Curtis, Co-Sales Managers, Pat Randel, Business Manager, Arlene Campbell, Assitsant Business Manager, Pat Gidcomb, Publicity Manager, and Carol Theodorow and Vic Mosotti, Co-Art Editors. Eaz lt has become a tradition around Ritenour that every other Wfednesday is Pepper Box Gay. On this one day everyone in school talks about the turrent news in sports, activities, and students. Pepper Box was established thirty-three years ago. In this time it has grown from a small pastime, requiring only a few students and a little time, into an all-out project requiring many members, much news. and a considerable amount of time. Many thanges have been made since the first issue. For instante. it cost about S500 a year to publish when it was first established. It now costs at least 81200. The paper then was much smaller and came out only once a month. It also required only one sponsor. This year Pepper Box has had an exceptionally good business and editorial staff. The students who make up the Editorial staff are Helen McClintock, Editor-in-Chief, Sue Jackson, Assistant Editor, Jo Anne Crider, Page One, Aneva Jo Dunham, Page Two, Bob Trammel, Sports, Myra Lane, Page Four, Carol Theodorow, Headline Editor, and Carolyn Tayloe, Copy Editor, The Business staff is Nick Kuntz, Business Manager, Ida Ruppert, Advertising Manager, Judy Poinclexter, Circulation Managerg and Bill Schwend, Concession Manager. Staffs and sponsors will come and go, but as long as there is a Ritenour there will be a Pepper Box. TOP-Left to right: Aneva Jo Dunham, Myra Lane. Jo Anne Crider. Helen MtClintotk, Sue Jatkson. The Student Council was organized at Ritenour Senior High in 1950. Since that time it has been very active. Last spring after clever campaigning, the following offi cers were elected: President, Bill Sullinsg Vice President Madelyn Horn, Secretary-Treasurer, Joan Hilsabeckg and Corresponding Secretary, Ann McIntyre. The advisors for this year's Student Council are Miss Elliott, Mrs. Kraemer, and Mr. Fisher. The Student Council is composed of the elected Student Council officers, class officers, one representative from each second hour class, and the advisors. An alternate representative is also elected from each room to attend the meetings, which are held on Monday mornings, when the regular representative is absent. are the Football Dance, Buzz Books, Clubs, Alumni-Varsity Basketball Game, an annual collection for a Christmas gift to CARE, a Rock R, and two successful Nickelodian Dances. The Council has also established a regular column in the Pepper Box to report to students its news and has added to those eligible for letters and awards, the members of the Dramatics Club. Among the activities of the Student Council of '55-56 ln 1929 Miss liyerley and 22 students organized the Ritenour Drainatit' Club, The purpose of the rlub w.1sn't to train future attors, but to teach students self- reliante, dependability, and self-confidence, Today, 27 years later, Miss Everley is still devoting her time and effort to the sponsorship of the Dramatit' Club. This years members are hard working and enthusiass tit. The new members are chosen eaeh year by try-outs in the fall and are judged by a group of teachers and senior members. Membership is limited to juniors and seniors. The president, Ken Mehl, was eletted last spring so he could begin to organize the club early in the year. The other offieers are Diana Stopke, vice presidentg jim Andrews, seeretaryg and Doris Copeland, treasurer. A skit for Education Week was the first performance of this year's club. It was written by its members. During the Christmas season, two plays were pre- sented, PDI' READS A CHRISTMAS CAROL was pre- sented for the Christmas assembly, and THE BIRD'S CHRISTMAS CAROL was performed at Marion School for the IQhaucer-Tennyson Improvement Association. The annual THREE ONE-ACT PLAYS were given in Man h with their usual enjoyment for all. This year will be the first year that Dramatic Club members reteived letters. Besides being a twohyear mem- ber, one must pass a set of standards to receive the award. Campbell and Mrs. Louise Speh, the club chose to be led by President, Ray Reese, Vice President, Kenny Knobelockg and Secre- tary, Larry Lomax. Wits and words clashed several times in interschool debates on the year's topic, Resolved: That Governmental Subsidies Should Be Granted According To Need To High School Graduates Who Qualify For Additional Training. Defending the negative side were H. G. Miller, Frances Armstrong, Charles Bacon, and jo Anne Crider.
