It was with great sorrow that the Ritenour students and faculty received the unbelievable news of their dear companions death, and rea- lized that her cheery smile would no longer brighten the halls of Ritenour. Jeanie was active in several of the organiza- tions of Ritenour including Pepper Box and Stu- dent Council, but was best known for her mu- sical activities. As flutist in Band and Orchestra, and accompanist for the Mixed Chorus, Jeannie was the mainstay of many school functions. Under the careful super- vision of coaches Moore, Mayerle, and Engert the varsity, iunior varsity, and sophomore teams were molded. After scrimages and hours of practice, the team started the season by playing host to the east side's Assumption High School. Ritenour fought with a vigor which made the game such a closely contested game that Assumption was barely able to win the game. Mike Vance, Dennis Christman, Norval Walter, Truman Nicholls, Bob Caldwell A more determined, toughened team faced The Condesco Rams the following week. Thrill after thrill ensued as the game progressed and Ritenour came out with its first season's victory. In the following weeks the Huskies had to bow to the powerful Maplewood, Webster and University City elevens. More closely fought games resulted in wins over McKinley, and Fer- guson and a tie with Granite City. Perhaps the most discouraging incident of the season came with a '21-20 loss to Kirkwood after a spectacular, second half comeback by the Hus- kies at the host's school. The T955 Student Council has again left ber hind a brilliant trail of accomplishments to all the bettermen of Ritenour Senior High. Since its beginning in 1950, it has done a great service to our school by making it possible for students to express themselves and thereby push the Spirit of Democracy to the fore. During an exciting campaign last spring, the Council's officers were elected, they were presi- dent, Barry Wiedenkeller, vice-president, Ken Rose, secretary-treasurer, Irene Kuntz, and cor- responding secretary, Betty Black. Sponsoring the Student Council was the job of Miss Elliott, Mrs. Kraemer, and Mr. Fisher. The Council is made up of its elected officers, a representative from each second hour class, and the officers of the sophomore iunior, and senior classes. This year, the Student Council has sponsored the annual Football Dance, the Turkey Bowl Foot- ball Game held on Thanksgiving Day with our friendly rival Normandy High, the tamed Buzz Books, the bright-colored flags representing dif- ferent schools which decorate the gymnasium, and last but not least, the Council has done its part in helping other countries by sending much- needed Care packages to Korea, and sponsor- ing other worth-while proiects. D. 0. pzagfzczm The D. O. program at Ritenour offers co-op- erative venture with the school and employers of the community, and allows school Training to students in many different fields of work. The program gives the employer an opportunity to accept his share of responsibility in the com- munity and to help build better citizens by his example. Juniors and seniors are the only ones who are able to enter the D. O. program. They also must be at least sixteen years of age, and must have qualified for the course through their school records and through their association with their teachers. flf a student enters the D. O. pro- gram, his required subjects are given to him in morning classes. He is then free to work in the afternoonl. A D. O. student works a minimum of fifteen hours a week, To remain in DO., a student must develop good working habits, a general interest in his iob, and must have a good attendance record at school and on his job. He must also show progressiveness in his work. The DO. Program was first introduced to the Ritenour curriculum in T938 with only a handful of students participating. Through the years, the DO. Program has gained popularity until now there are over forty students taking D.O. at Ritenour. The Ritenour program is under the T '55-f Ruth Bourne. direction of Mr. Virgil Todd who has been at this school for eight years.
