In each one of these classes the students are given a chance to develop their abilities in scholastic interest, leadership, and social activity. Ritenour started with a very small enrollment, but through the years it now boasts an enrollment ot lOOO students. We feel certain that growth will be an enormous factor of Ritenour's future. Moreover, with growth will come a greater degree of outstanding classes in the various activities of the school. Siiphimmre Class Ilistor The time has finally come when we have en- tered the Senior High School. The officers that were elected were: Bill Sullins, President, D. C. Look, Vice President, and Thelma Butler, Secretary, Bill Sullins was elected as the representa- tive for the Sophomore Pilgramage, which will take him to Jefferson City. We elected Betty Black and Nan Maples as our Melaureus Popularity Queen candidates. We are truly looking forward to the years ahead that we will spend at Ritenour High School. Page Forty-nine llrgani ation The various organizatoins at Ritenour give students the opportunity to develop personality, leadership, and character. These activities give the students the chance ot turning away from their school work and showing their interests and abilities in the extra curricular activi- ties that are provided tor them. As a result ot the Ritenour students' interest in the organizations, the school has developed an outstanding yearbook, newspaper, band and dramatic club. These organizations have given the student the chance to develop a desired goal, the ability to get along with others. Fifty Page Fifty-one 0 0 lli-Iiiui vue Time is fleeting and another year has passed. We sold over 700 yearbooks, so there will be .1 yearbook next year. There was some doubt for a time whether or not we would reach our goal, but we succeeded through the splendid cooperation and effort of the sales staff. At times the going was rough, However, Mr. Redfield, the sponsor, and the officers managed to see their way through. Dorothy Kopp, Edi- tor-in-Chief, Business Manager, and Treasurer, Judy Lucas and Joan Brown, Co-Sales Managers, Barbara Portell, Advertising Manager, Barry Wiedenkeller, Literary Editorg Walter Potthoff, Production Manager, and Larry Howard, Assist- ant Production Manager, spent mnny hours working on this year's book. This year's Pepper Box was sponsored by Mr. Gilbert Wild, Journalism teacher, who has held that position for several years. The paper was piloted by a very able staff of people some of whom being seniors, retired in January. They were Robert Hand- kins, Editor-in-Chief, Helen Brandenburg, Carol Lumar, Clarence Evans, and Betty May, Page Editors, Sue Dyer, Assistant Editor, Marie Han- neken, Copy Editor, and Norma Andereck, Head- line Editor. Heading the new staff is Sue Dyer, who has moved up from her position as Assistant Editor, The new assistant editor is Sonia Erickson. Nor- ma Andereck, Glenda Dunham, Bob Trammel, .tnd Betty May are the present Page Editors. Larry Gilmore is Copy Editor and Irene Kuntz is Headline Editor. These students comprise the editorial staff. Their iob is to write and edit. But without an- other group, their efforts would be in vain. This other group is the business staff. Mem- bers of this year's staff are Ken Rose, Business Manager, Jerry Middleton, Advertising Man- ager, lrene Kuntz, Circulation Manager, and Mil- lard Dunham, Concession Manager. These hard workers are usually behind the scenes but they certainly perform a valuable function. Among the duties carried out by them are operating the concession stand, soliciting advertising, and keeping the paper circulating among other high schools. The first presentation of the Dramatic Club was a skit given in commemoration of Educational Week. This was an original skit written by a Ritenour student. Two plays were presented during the pre- Christmas season. NO ROOM IN THE HOTEL, was presented at the annual Christmas program on Thursday night, and the comedy LIGHT COM- PETITION was given in assembly the following Wednesday afternoon. The highlight of the year came on February 26th, when the Dramatic Club presented THE THREE ONE ACT PLAYS. Two comedies FIND- ERS KEEPERS, and I LOVE YOU TRULY, and a serious play THE DAY AFTER FOREVER were presented. The organization consists of juniors and seniors who pass the try-outs at the beginning of the year. Ritenour was well represented this year with l4 of its chorus members making All County Chorus. Another branch of the Music Department was Band and Orchestra, both were under the reign of Dot Lewis President. Band was composed of 411 members including their 6 maiorettes. The Band marched at all home Football Games, the Armistice Day Parade, and the Decoration Parade held in Overland. Their concert was in April and they appeared in the Music Festival. Only two of its members made All County Band, and one of the two made All State Band, quite an honor for our Alma Mater. Together with chorus they appeared on K.W.K's High School Revue, the Christmas Program and finally gradu- ation. Last but not least is the 20 piece Orches- tra which appears only at the Band Concert, but does a very good fob of this. The whole department was under the direction of Mr. Rose who has done a wonderful job in 53-54. Since its birth in l950, Student Council has accomplished a great deal, and this year's Council can look back on work well done. Last spring following a campaign that stirred up student interest to its peak with its posters and campaign speeches, the following officers were elected: President, Lewis Reid, Vice Presi- dent, Bob Howard, Secretary, Marion Menefee, and Corresponding Secretary, Marilyn Worthen. Marion resigned during first semester and Mari- lyn took over as Secretary with Dorothy Lewis taking over the duties of Corresponding Secre- tary. Student Council is composed of the four elec- ted officers, a representative from each second hour class, and the officers from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. The sponsors this year are Miss Elliott, Mrs, Kraemer, and Mr. Fisher. The Council sponsored the first dance of the year and it turned out to be one of the most successful dances Ritenour has ever had. Council was also responsible for the Turkey Bowl, a Thanksgiving Day football game against Normandy High. Ritenour won the trophy, a wagon wheel with the results of the game placed on a spoke of the wheel. There were forty-two students who were very thrilled after the Honor Society list was posted, all of which deserved the honor of being elected to it. Members of the National Honor Society are selected from Seniors who are in the upper third of their class on the basis of leadership, service and character. Fifteen per cent of the total number in the Senior class may be elected. By secret vote the faculty members who have been on the staff Ilonor Soviiity a year or more indicate the students they know well and the ones for whom they wish to vote. Students who receive two-thirds of the votes of teachers who know them are elected, pro- vided the total number is not more than fifteen per cent of the Senior class. In case more than the given percentage are elected, the teachers re-vote and select a smaller number. It is the present hope of the living found- ers to direct and to center the enthusiasm of the youth of this land as they take their place in the life of our commonwealth. The Society started in l92l at the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Today there are more than twenty-five hundred chapters in the best high schools of this country. There are chapters in every state except in Puerto Rico, in Hawaii, and in the Phillippines. The National Honor Society is directed by a National Council of ten, three of whom are chosen each year at the February meeting of the National Association of the Secondary School Principals. This Council directs the activities and formulates the policies of the organization. The local chapters are of two groups: the senior chapters, which have members in the two upper years of the high school enrollment, and the iunior chapters, which have numbers in the iunior high schools and in the lower years of the senior and four years high school. The National Honor Society ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 27, at which time the members received their honorary pins. Practice started a week before school. Tem- peratures ranged from 90 to TOO , but this did not stop the large group of enthusiastic fellows. This years turn out was the largest Ritenour has ever had. By the end of the week, the team was beginning to take shape. During the second week, it scrimmaged Beaumont. The squad was eager to get out and play, and play they did. After the scrimmage Coach Moore said that the spirit of the fellows was excellent. For our first game, the squad traveled to East St. Louis to play the very strong Assumption High. Last year Assumption was the only school to defeat us, but this year we were out to change the situation. All we needed, in the first quarter, Jerry Marchlowski, Mr. Moore, Mr. Nlayerle, John Orlando Ollie Balling, Jon Welker, Pete Orlando, John Orlando. Our team retained its lead until its pass defense was broken by iniuries. Assump- tion took advantage of the situation and scored on a short pass. But this was as far as they could go. At the end of the game, the score was six all. The following game we fell prey to the Coun- try Day Rams, with a T4-O score. Our first home game came the next week as we played host to Central High. The stands were iammed with spectators hoping for a win. The fans got what they wanted and the fighting Huskies came out on top 20-12. For our first league game, at Foiilhall home, we faced Webster Groves. A win seemed to be in the future, but Webster's eleven pressed hard and won, 25-13. This seemed to start a streak of bad luck for the Huskies, but our opponents had to work extra hard for every point they got. A win over University City wasn't in the hat for us as' they scored time and time again to win 32-6. Our following game was with Granite City. The team looked much better than in our previous games. At the half we were ahead, but Granite City took advantage of our fumbles and rallied to win T4-12. We again fell prey to Kirkwood with a 24-20 score and also to Maplewood with a score of 26-7. Hold Onto That Ball The next two weeks, the squad worked hard on their plays in preparation for the big game with Normandy. This game was the first of the Turkey Bowl series to follow between Normandy and Ritenour. This was the most important game of the year in the eyes of Ritenour and the squad was out to make it their best game of the year. Our first score came in the second quarter when John Orlando broke through the line and hit paydirt. This brought the crowd of an esti- mated five thousand to their feet. Almost three thousand of this crowd were Ritenourites and former Ritenourites. Again we rallied, in the third quarter, as Roland Boehm heaved a pass to Jerry Berendt and another one, later on, to Pete Orlando. The Vikings could not get a sus- tained drive throughout the entire game as we played with everything we had. Our final score came as a result of an interception by Ray Boden. Gi-tting Ready Bottoms Up llii0l.lialI There were three main factors which brought our team to this great victory. They were: enth- usiastic school spirit, excellent coaching, and a lot of exceptionally good teamwork. School spirit was shown by the immense crowds at home and abroad. The cheerleaders can be given a lot of credit for helping to support and lead this spirit. The coaching staff consisted of Coach John Moore, Coach Matthew Mayerle and Coach Lee Engert, sophomore coach. The vigorous interest displayed by these men is significant of what makes Ritenour great in sports. Every team has to find the way to the top. This year's team found this factor to be teamwork, as was dis- played in the Thanksgiving Day game at Nor- mandy. Coach Lee Engert's sophomore team can be very proud this year. After winning their last game, they clinched their title for first place in the Sophomore League of the Big Six Division. This year's co-captains, Jerry Marchlewski and John Orlando, are now retiring after a great iob, but stepping up to their place will be Jack Rosner and Dick Hunt, Thus ends another page in Ritenour's football record book. There are twelve individual bouts in each meet, and every one of them keep you on the edge of your seats screaming your lungs out, If you have seen the wrestling team that represents your school, in action, you will of course realize that unlike other sports such as basketball or football, the contestf ants must perform individually. A wrestler goes on the mat and fights his heart out to win with no one to pass the ball to, only the moral support of his team mates and those of the audience to spur him on to v i c t o r y. However, the wrestler alone knows full well, that while he may have to perform alone for six grueling minutes, he may have spent many a tough hour proving himself worthy of the chance to represent his team in his individual weight, in bone bruising competi- tion with his team mates. So the success of any wrestler is depend- ent upon the whole squad, in the fierce vieing for positions on the team. A look behind the scenes starts in the locker room at about 3:05 p. m. daily except Saturday and Sunday. First into your sweat clothes, then check your weight, run two laps around the entire athletic field, four or five 50-yard dashes, then upstairs to the gym for thirty or forty minutes of vigorous exercises. After that two to two and a half solid hours of actual wrestling, learning new holds and how to break them. At last, the showers and home to supper, Mom is mad because you are late. Comes the day you've been working and waiting for, the match! It's l2f3O p. m., you go to the dress- ing room to be sure of your weight, gads ! I didn't think that I ate that much for dinner, l'm two pounds over. Coach Moore intercedes with Mr. Costilow to get you out of two classes so you can work off that extra poundage before 3:30 p. m. On goes not one, but two or three sweat suits and at least two towels around the neck. You make tracks for the boiler room where your friend the maintenance man assures you there are at least twen- ty tons of coal in the wrong corner of the bin. He conveniently has a huge shovel handy and even puts it in your hand, and for the next hour to hour and a half you right the wrong done by the coal company and put that blasted coal in its proper place. Wring- ing wet with the most beautiful perspiration, you stagger back to the dressing room, undress, gingerly step upon the scales expectorating like mad, iust in case, Glory be you made it. Is it all worth it? you ask. Just pop that ques- tion to any wrestler, and five will get you ten his answer will be, You're durn tootin', we won didn't we? In the tirst meet of the year the senior division won from Maplewood 62 l 3 to 49 2 3. The track team meets a real need at Ritenour. It provides a spring sport for those who do not have the type of ability needed tor the baseball team. Since track consists of a wide variety of events, it makes possible a higher number of participants than any other type of interschool sport. The track team is making a significant contribution to the Ritenour athletic program by providing opportunities tor development of lead- ership and physical fitness for many ot our stu- dents. These ambitious girls gave much time and energy in order to help the students promote the excellent school spirit which prevailed at Ritenour all year. They not only led the cheers during the football and basketball seasons but also conducted assemblies and worked on the Good Sportsmanship Drive. Congratulations go to these vivacious cheer- leaders who did a marvelous iob for their school.
