He was a teacher in the Ohio Schools at the time of his induction into the Armed Services during World War II. On Sept. 4, 1951, Mr. Barton began his teaching in the Risingsun School, to in- clude Business Education and English. Immediately, he had many friends in the school and community, as he was one of the group. Whenever a school activity was held, Mr. Barton could be depended upon to be there, in the line of duty. On Wednesday, March 12, 1952, while doing his teaching, he was stricken with illness. After a short time, he again appeared for two classes and said he was feeling better and ready to go. However, after school closed for the day, was again ill, an illness which led to his sudden death on Saturday, March 15, 1952, at 8:30 A. M. It was with much sadness, that the people learned of the death of our Commercial Teacher. Mr. Barton was a kind, energetic, tireless, friendly, and thoughtful person. He was always helping someone, as he found pleasure in assisting the students from day to day. May we always remember him as just one fine fellow and as a friend to all of us. -lv - -1- 1 v '- - v- -v - sv Y' w T' BOARD OF EDUCATION 4 0 0 0 0 0 u o oboe: its QQQJQ C1 C1erkol00s'dcuol looconoonnuaooooeo Qgpnon Eg Henry Bingle Elder Babcock Ottis Bowe -9 W-. .W . Our Coach, a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a graduate of Toledo University. While attending Toledo University, Coach was very active in football and basketball. After graduating from college, he taught at Payne Ohio. He then came to Risingsun in 1948 to teach Social Sciences and Phy- sical Education. He has done a wonderful job in Risfngsun, never tiring of being asked to do different tasks, or to help further our school in its activities. During his four years here, he has gained the admiration and friendship of all the students and fellow teachers. Coach has worked unceasingly with the boys and girls, giving them freely, without hesitation, all of his spare time. We, without limitation, feel that our Coach has well earned any honors that is bestowed upon him, and we, the Annual Staff desire to take this opportunity to wish him good luck, and my he spend many more happy years with us here, at nRising Hin. .A-a , EDITORIAL As May in the year of nineteen hundred and fifty two approaches, it reminds us that it will soon be time for the Seniors of Rising Hi to step up to take their places in this world to women of the sick ilege of when the field of fill the many positions that are open to the men and tomorrow. There will be doctors and nurses to aid and the needy, teachers to teach children the priv- being an American citizen and how to take their places time comes, scientists to continue in the wonderful research, and all the other occupations that make up this great country of ours. But the most important task for all of us to undertake is our fight for freedom. The freedom that every man, woman, and child is striving to hold. Our freedom of speech--to say what we wish to say, our freedom of religion--to attend the church of our choice. These are only two and that examples of the freedom we are striving to retain are imperative if our democracy is to survive. - 1 I, as Editor of this annual, The nRising Hin wish to ex- press my thanks to the annual staff, to the faculty, fellow students, merchants, and everyone else who has helped to make the 1952 edition of the year book a success. ,3 .g:..,-1- ' - .X ,,-..12z.,'-'Q-f f- '- I . First I looked up June Gorrill. She was married soon after graduation. Her husband entered the army soon after their marriage. They had bought a farm before they were married so, June managed it while army. He came home and June went They now have eleven children and more. her husband was in the indoors to her housework. June says she wants ten It was hard to find him his own company. He sells supposed to cut any hair very short. So short, in fact, that you can't see it. Nsrt I found Harold Purkey. as he is a traveling salesman for automatic hair cutters, They are I then looked up Marilyn Thaxton. I found that she was no longer in Hisingsun. Her parents told me that hor boy- friend had been inducted into the army and she had joined the womens army soon after graduation to be near him. He was sent overseas so, Marilyn applied for overseas duty. She found him in Paris, France. They were married immed- iately. At the present time Marilyn outranks her husband. So, every time he sees her, she makes him salute. At this time I began to get hungry. I decided to eat my dinner at the Hotel Rising. Who should walk up to me but Bob Shawl He told me he was owner of this resturant and a chain of others. He was also chief cook in this one in Risingsun. He served the best spaghetti and meat balls in northwestern Ohio. As I was eating Donna Lehmann walked in. She told me she was modeling in New York. She recently tried her hand at designing. She has designed a new evening gown made of fish net. She calls it nThe Peek-a-boo.n I asked Donna what had become of Don Norman. She told me Don was managing the trucking department of the AkP. He has three men under him carrying groceries to the cars of frail young women. On the side he has started a lonely hearts club for young men and women. His slogan is: nLook before you leap into marriage.H By this time I was finished with my dinner. As' I walked out of the resturant I bumped into Doris Ponsetta. She looked quite different than when she was in high school' When in school she was exceptionally small and now sho was much bigger and quite muscular. She told me she had taken up the career of boxing. Her next match is a main event at Madison Square-Garden in New York City. PROPHECY fCON'Tl v- sl, -.- I asked about Harry Kemenah. Doris told me that Harry owned a beauty salon in Risingsun and a chain of others across the United States. He has a new hair-do called the Elephant Cut. It is cut short except a spot down the middle which is braided and stands straight up in the air. Next I looked up Idonna Kehres. While in school Coach wanted to be her wrestling manager. After graduation she bought Mom's Lunch Room but, decided resturant work wasn't for her. Again Coach approached her about wrestling so she decided to give it a try. At present she has never lost a bout. She has won every championship wrestling offers. At the present time she is engaged to the 'Blumpn and plans to retire from wrestling after marriage. I asked Idonna about William Gangwer. She told me he was running a gasoline station in Bradner. In the last few years he has tried his hand at inventing. He has invented a new gasoline. You fill the tank on January l, and after that you Don't have to fill it till the next year. When this gasoline is in your car, all you do is pull a lever, which by the way, Willie invented, and your car goes up into the air and you fly for hours at a time. Willie married soon after graduation and has a large family at present. Next I looked around for Ruth Ann Bell. I she had gone west. She now owns and runs She has about ten thousand head of cattle back every day as she inspects her cattle them no matter where they are or what the was told that a big cattle ranch. She rides horse- She inspects weather is. She has invented a new cushioned saddle. Of course, she was first to try it out. After finding out about Ruth, I looked up Everett Brewer. After graduation he had gone to college and had taken an executive course. After college he decided he would manufacture something that all women would need sooner or later. So, he became a manufacturer of women's girdles. His girdles are known as nThe four way stretch.n I next found Marie Hiser. In school she always liked to sing. After graduation she went to a music conservatory., After years of study she finally broke into operas. She told me she had an engagement next month to sing at Carnegie Hall. She has had very good notices so far from all the critics. I then wished her luck and went on my way. I, Naomi Bateson, after being jilted at the altar two different times, have become a Monk, and dedicated my life to religion. nn- f lf' Q- RISINGSUN HIGH SCHDOL CLASS OF 1952 BACCALAUREATE SERVICES, SUNDAY MAY 18, 1952 PROCESSIONAL Prelude ---- ----- ------------------ ---- ----Charmaine Strawman Hymn ------- ----- --------------------- NAmerica the Beautifulu Led by Music Instructor, John Christman Scripture Reading and Invocation ---- ----- -Rev. Seniors of J52 SENIOR HISTORY ,Liguria ,us-Q. f .. In l948 we entered what we have been looking forward to, namely: NHigh Schooln. Our first real big activity was nin1tiation.u We went through the same routine, if not worse, than the other Freshmen had. Marilyn Thaxton was the attendant this year for the Homecoming football game We began our sophomore year and on September 30, l949 we gave the Freshmen the Wold routinen. Doris Ponsetta was elected Queen Attendant from our grade for the Homecoming football game with Bradner. June Gorrill was chosen Drum Majorette. As we entered our Junior year there seemed to be more for us to do. Naomi Bateson and Donna Lehmann were elected cheerleaders and Donna Lehmann as Queen Attendant. The main event was getting our class rings which we received shortly after school began. We looked forward to planning the Junior- Senior banquet which was held April 14, and after the enjoy- able banquet we journeyed to the sports arena and enjoyed Guy Lombardo and his orchestra. Most of our boys were active in sports. Harry Kemenah was awarded honorable mention as an all county football player. Also Donna Lehmann was chosen to go to Buckeye Girls' state and Don Norman to go to Buckeye Boys' state. We came back to school in l95l for our final year of school. This year will be considered as our busiest and happiest of all. Donna Lehmann was elected Queen Attendant for the Homecoming football game. Our next big thing was deciding our annual and annual staff. We decided to have a completely different annual this year and we are all working very hard to make itxa success. We had a profitable magazinex campaign in October and sold many things to help toward our A Senior trip. Five of our class were on the football squad, three on the basketball team, two were majorettes, three were cheer- leaders, four were F.H.A. members, six were band members, three were Thespian's, five were Glee Club members, five F.F.A. members, and eight were Dramatic Club members. We are looking forward to our Senior Class trip, which we will take the last part of May. After a few weeks we became used to the idea and liked it. To help us get the true feeling we received our class rings the second week of school. At the beginning of this year Joann Lehmann was elected to be a cheerleader, but due to illness she only cheered for a few football games. As a result of this, another election gave Shirley Loomis the opportunity of cheering. Charmaine Strawman won the Ohio History and Citizenship Test which was taken by four students from our class. As a result of this, she spent an enjoyable week end at the Ohio University. We are honored to say that Martha Strong was chosen Football Queen. We are looking forward to entertaining the Seniors at the Junior R Senior Banquet, and hope that it will be a success. Their high hopes for a very successful season were in the air. These hopes may well have been realized except for a serious injury jinx which entered the Tiger Camp before the first game and remained throughout the season, As it was, their record of three wins in eight starts still placed them high in league standing. The highlights of the season were our 14-15 victory over Wayne-Bradner. contest being -- In the t Risingsun and proximity and the lights at Three eleven man games were played, with one under the lighted field of Fostoria. aditional nCider Jugn game, two great Ohio Powers Bloomdale, natural rivals, due to geographic because of their well matched teams, dueled under Bloomdale. The score being 55-26 doesn't indi- cate the closeness of the game. What may have been more important, was the fact that, the contest prooved that students of the two schools could mingle in large numbers and maintain an attitude of friendly sports- manship. Co-Captain, William Gangwer- A Stalwart on defense, had an early injury which handicapped his playing. Co-Captain, Harry Kemenah- Quarterback and workhorse of the team, played excellent football. Everett Brewer- An outstanding end, kicked the extra points for the team. Dean Barlekamp- Big and rugged, injury ridden. Robert Shaw- First year man, Don Norman- Offensive center charger. played good football. and a sparkling defensive Bernard Kreais- A strong defensive end. Buster Hunt- Sparkling right halfback. Carl Klotz- Defensive center, powerful and strong. Rex Bateson- Shifty and dangerous. Eddie kirer- Small but courageous. John James- Scored most of the touchdowns, a hard elusive runner. David Hoover- A defensive wizard. He likes it rough. Leo Stiger ifingersj The ability to catch passes led him to give the fans some interesting moments. .With this 1952 season, Coach Gladieux, a Toledo U. grad- uate, was completing his fourth season with the Risingsun School. He definitely is a friend to football. His teams have always been in fine physical condition, fundamentally strong and eager to play. At the beginning of this year, he had all the boys for football but seven. He never refuses to offer a chance to the boys, regardless of age.or size. Mr. Gladieux makes big predictions for the 1952 season. He has already received additional uniforms to be prepared for more candidates. BASKETBALL 1951-52 The Risingsun team this year was popular with the fans wherever they traveled. Fans, all through the county' marveled at how a quintet, that usually averaged around 5'7n in heighth, could produce such speed and ball handling ability. Coach Gladieux featured a set pattern of offense with an occasional fast break offense that literally ran their opponents off of their feet. With deadly eyes, the Tigers, when slowed down, turned on their famous set shot barrage ability, backed up with fine passing control. This was a ball p1ayer's club. No one man constantly stood out as an individual star. Team work and the fact that every player was capable made the Tigers a strong group. Harry Kemenah, St., 5'3u guard QCaptainJ one of the Tigers greatest all around athletes. Popular Harry captivcd his ninth monogram. He was used primarily as a guiding influence and as playmaker. Everett Brewer, Sr., 5'lOH forward was the veteran of the squad. Bugal has been on the team three years. When need ed in this year of tall men, he continued as a cool playmaking expert and a fine pivot shot. Don Norman, Sr., 5'l0n center. Reliable Don played both center and forward and stood out on defense. He played more than any other Tiger. John James, Soph., 5'7H forward. One of the smoothest forwards in Tiger history. John had the best average of all the orange and black shooters. He was usually the man back to stop the opponents fast break. Eddie Mirer, Jr., 5'6u guard. On a scoring night Ed meant ntroubleu for the opposition. He played inspired ball and was extremely popular with the fans. Duane Correll, Soph., 5'6n guard. has a very flashy man on the squad. Young and fast, he may develop into a sensa- tion. On fast breaks he teams very well with Buster Hunt. Buster Hunt, Jr., 5'5N guard. This letterman of the 51-52 team became very popular with the spectators for he proved himself fast and reliable. Dick Lehmann, Fr., 5'lOu. A center was constantly improving in the pivot shot. Dick may be the coaches dream of an Hagile big mann. He had the least experience at the start of the season but his amazing improvement, week by week, made him a ufirst stringn substitute. Stiger, Deer, Kreais, Klotz and Hoover proved them- selvzs to be assets to the team throughout the season, for their encouragement from the bench. Next season they will be in the nthick of the battlen. Coach Gladieux has already arranged for a sixteen game schedule in l952-53- so power to the future for Risingsun and nfull speed aheadd. SENIOR BAND After three months of sum er rehersals and several per- formances under the direction of Mr. Richard Downs of Fostoria, we came back to school to meet our new director, Mr. John C. Christman. During this school year we received our new orange and black uniforms, of which we are very proud. We first were these uniforms at Fostoria in the Halloween Parade. We performed at several football and basketball games, topping this by appearing in the Northwestern Ohio Music Contest and Band Concert. The School Board very graciously contributed two new instruments to further the instrumentation of our band, These instruments are a sousaphone, and a tenor saxaphone. The Annual Staff. 4 Deceased We, the Annual Staff wish to thank everyone, who in any way has meds this Annual a success. RS FINIS As our twelve years draw to a close, I stop and think of the years that we have spent together. This includes the fun and hardships we have shared and our friends and teachers that we are leaving behind us. My thoughts wander back to the first day, in 1939, when we first came to school. There was the excitement of meeting most of our friends for the first time, and the idea of starting to do something entirely new. This was something we had never before experienced. As we advanced on in the years, we became accustomed to school, and it soon became the Hold routinen. In 1946, we again had a new experience. We were upstairs with the older students, and had a schedule like theirs, with a different teacher for each subject. We were now, beginning to feel like we were mature. In 1948, we were initiated into High School. We were allowed to choose our own subjects and take part in High School activities. The next four years went very quickly, and now it is time for us to graduate. Most of us have chosen our careers, and we are waiting until the day we can take our place by the side of many others in this world. To my fellow classmates, I want to thank you very much for making my twelve years in High School, twelve wonderful and unforgettable years. I, especially want to thank you for your co-operation during our Senior year, and for making it a success, and for your remarkable endurance while pub- lishing this year book. I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and everyone of you the greatest success in your chosen profession w-. flklli THE EDITOR I , , CM-f V 001355 S me mf Q . . ,x 15 X XIX I Xxx 3 QI.
