We gained new players from both Cass Union and Bear Branch. At our first class meeting, with Miss Grace McCurry and Mr. Buren Hooper as our umpires, we elected class officers as follows: President, Donalea Adams, Vice President, Jack York, Secretory, Tom Miller, and Treasurer, Jimmy Mattox. Donalea Adams was chosen as one of our varsity cheerleaders for the first year. During the year, we had two class parties, the first of which was a skating party and the second, a spring festival. The class also took the responsibility of handling concessions at Junior High Basketball Games. We left school in the spring of 56, with expectations of returning in the autumn with 62 players. STRIKE TWO As we started our second year as Sappy Sophomores, we found we had lost Joan Bannon, Janet Dameron, Lula Gulley, Pauline Saupe, David South and Wesley Walston. However, we had gained Anna Mae Parrish and Lee Stuard. This left us with a team of 58 players. At our first class meeting, with Miss McCurry as our umpire, we elected class officers as follows: President, Donalea Adams, Vice President, Mary Ann Lotton, Secretary, Judy Billingsley, and Treasurer, Anita Swinford. Bobby Keith was elected to represent our class in Student Council. Donalea Adams was once again chosen cheerleader. We sponsored, during the year, the Annual Sweetheart Dance, at which our Sec- retary, Judy Billingsley, was elected Queen. Other activities were: Jr. High concess- ions, Hat and Coat Check, and a Skating Party, thrown for the benefit of class funds. In May we once again departed to our homes, for vacations, hoping that we would retum with our 58 prominent players. STRIKE THREE Coming to bat for the third year as Jolly Juniors, we found our class still smaller, with 52 players. We had lost: .Donalea Adams, Anna Mae Parrish, Lee Stuard, Jack York, Claudia Pearson, Kenneth Wcilston, George Armstrong, Georgia Mendell and Jimmy Mattox. We had gained Wlndy Baker, Joan Bannon, Carolyn Galbreath and Donna Lowe. At our first class meeting, with Miss McCurry and a new member of the faculty, Mr. David Pamell, for our umpires, we elected class officers as follows: President, Bobby Keith, Vice President, Windy Baker, Secretary, Sharol Schmeltz, Treasurer, Anita Swinford, and Student Council member, Shirley Bovard. We received our class rings in November. Sales sporeored by our class this year were: Concessions at Varsity Games, Magazine Sales, Pen 8- Scarf Sales, branded with the name of the High School Basketball Team, the Shiners, Christmas Candy, Memory Books and Noon Candy Sales. During this same year, we seniors joined the P. T. A. in presenting, for public enioyment, a square dance. At the close of the year we had a total of 52 players, which was the exact number, with 'which we began, the first semester. WE'RE OUT Coming up for our final game as Dignified Seniors, we found we had a total of 43 players. During the summer we had lost, Joan Bannon, Pat Bayne, Faye Dailey, Linda Kirkey, Esther Martin, Marion Noll, and Linda McPherson. Two additional players left us, after a'few weeks of our senior trials and tribulations. We had gained only one player, Leotta'Mayo. During this same summer, the summer of '58, occurred the tragic death of a fellow classmate and very dear friend, Nelson VanTyle. To begin our final year, Miss Grace McCurry and Mr. Edward Gray were chosen for our umpires. Class officers were as follows: President, Bobby Keith, Vice President, Ivan Green, Secretary, Shirley Bovard, Treasurer, Anita Swinford, and Student Council Member, Larry Weaver. We elected, for Boy 8- Girl State, Anita Swinford, Phyllis Sommer, Sharol Schmeltz, Bill Koons and Ivan Green. We chose Anita Swinford as editor of the yearbook, and Bobby Keith as assistant editor. Editors of the school paper were, Paula Neaman, Shirley Bovard, 8- Mary Ann Lotton. ,Mary Ann Lotton was elected cheerleader for her first year. The D . A. R. award for our year was presented to Anita Swinford. We sponsored several activities to help further financial matters and to clear the way for our senior trip. Among these were: Chile Suppers, Bake Sales, Cake Raffles, Car Washes, 8- Sock Hops. We also sold Christmas Candy, went to the lce Capades, 8. sponsored a Donkey Basketball Game. Announcements and Cards were ordered in the month of December. The class voted on their Colors, Song, Flower, 8. Motto for the year on March 5. Baccalaureate was held May l7, in the Gymnasium and Commencement Exercises were held May 21, when we were presented our diplomas. May 24, we left Rising Sun, to tour Washington D. Upon arriving at the city BOB KEITH, the mayor, greeted them and presented them some news of their fonner classmates. ELLEN HEHE and JUDY WALTON were now large department owners . Flrst off they declded to visit Mr. and Mrs. LARRY WHITHAM. Mrs. Whitham being the former ANITA SWINFORD . Upon arriving they met GENE LAAKER, who is now a traveling salesman. Anlta Invited them ln to talk over old times. The tele- vision was on at the time and the morning news had iust started. The newscaster being none other than JOHN WHITLOCK. The first news item concerned VIRGIL IDIZZI RICHARDSON, the Hell Driver and his sidekick TOM PAVEY, who were planning to race at the Brickyard on Memorial Day. The owner of the Brickyard was none other than our old friend TOM MILLER. Another article was about JAYNE BROADUS, the first woman to become General in the Marines. This reminded Carolyn ofa previous newscast which was about DAVID EISENMAN and his explorations of Jupiter. Leaving there, they went to their old Alma Mater, Rlslng Sun High School. BOB JOHNSON, was now the Principal and LEOTTA MAYO IROBINSONI had replaced Miss Hizer as the Senior Engl Ish teacher. The Biology teacher was none other than KENNY POTTER. HELEN KETENBRINK iremember all those Shorthand Papersi had taken Mr. Alley's place and was now the new Commerce Teacher. Miss McCurry, one of their Senior sponsors, is now the State Superintendent of Public Schools. Mr. Gray, the other sponsor, is now married to a rich old widow. After having a nice vislt at Rlslng Sun they decided to go to Holders Heavenly Hash House, owned by GARRY HOLDER, for dinner. The cashier was none other than SHAROL SCHMELTZ, who gained the valuable training in the School Cafeteria. MARY LOUISE PAVEY was the featured singer of the evening. Glanclng at a newspaper they discovered PAULA NEAMAN, ELEANOR HENSCHEN, and SHIRLEY BOVARD were now making personal tours in Europe. Before touring Rlslng Sun they had an appointment at the Gooties Gazette the local newspaper. Who should they find but JANET BAILEY and CAROLYN FLEEK, co-editors of the paper. Starting on their tour of Rising Sun they passed by BETTY SIGMON and PHYLLIS SOMMER'S Undertaking establishment, having the slogan Do not furry, we can waitl Driving on they stopped at a filling station and leamed the proprietors were none other than DONALD VORIS and GORDON McCLOUD. While waiting for service BILL BOVARD and DAVID ZERKLE drove in. David said they were on their way to the ar- mory to see a wrestling match featuring Bone Crusher Jackson, known as LARRY WEAVER to them. David told them his friend JERRY SMITH, was now a famous baseball player for the Cincinnati Reds, fof coursej. Going back to their hotel, which was owned by MARY ANN LOTTON, the bell hop, GLENN WISEMAN, told Ivan that a wire arrived stating he was needed in Texas immediately if not sooner. Leaving town they were escorted by State Trooper, WINDY BAKER, while JACKIE HASTINGS and DONNA LOWE, the well known photographer for Scandal took pictures. They passed by TOM HUSSONG'S large dairy farm and regretted they did not get to see him. They told Windy to tell the gang they were planning another visit just as soon as they struck another oil well so they could afford tit. Upon returning to Texas they stopped at the Double BB Ranch and discovered another classmate, BILL KOONS, now the owner. A couple of days later Mayor Keith received a telegram stating that they arrived safely in Texas, and had just struck oil in the front yard. This may sound like an excuse, but for example, we played two games on our home floor and averaged 90.5 points a game: so that might give you an example of what the home floor means. So I think we had a good season from this standpoint. Ten games were less than I0 points and one game was by eleven. The sectional came iust about a week too soon as we couldn't shake off the flu in time to get started. Of course, we were not the only team with this misfortune, as it happened to many throughout the state. Many people predicted that this would be a banner season for the Shiners after their lopsided victory over the Patriot Trojans. But as Coach Smith had stated at the beginning of the season this would be more ofa rebuilding season and that is just what it tumed out to be. Many of the boys needed experience. As we only lost two starters again this year, the fans of R. S. H. S. are looking forward to a better season next year. And I'm quite sure the boys are capable of giving them one. The scene was in the Rising Sun gymnasium before, during and after the production of a play. During the course of events the play books are stolen, someone is shot, someone falls in love, and as the curtain goes down, the play ends happily for everyone. Our two female leads were Anita Kay Swinford, who played the part of the play director, Miss Irene Burgess, and Ellen Hehe, who played the leading part of the student, Lorry Fuller. We feel that the success of our play is due especially to the wonderful direction of Mr. Gerald Johnson. Everyone enjoyed the production, and it will long remain as a very pleasant memory in our hearts. Sweetheart Queen . . . Bobby Sue Bond Aurora Farr Queen. . . . El en Hehe Sunshine Queen . . . X Epitaph Ut Uur Senior Trip There was once a Senior Class From a town called Rising Sun Who decided to take a Senior Trip And have a little fun. The first night instead of sleeping They did nothing but talk and talk Little did they know that the next clay They would have to walk and walk. After two days of touring Ancl seeing everything they could see They decided the time had come For them to leave Washington, D. C. With suitcases in hand And souvenir hats on head They boarded the train Complaining they were half dead. On arrival in New York We thought they would go right to bed But boy, were we fooled When they stayed up all night instead. The next day they were scheduled To tour New York by bus But all you could hear Was a cuss and a fuss. That night they all dressed up And went to Radio City Music Hall And after the show was over They went out and had a ball. After a party all night It was a sight you should see As they boarded a subway Enroute to N. B. C. They appeared one by one On closed circuit TV With bags under eyes And each one with weak knee. Next on the agenda Was a taxicab trip Cross town to Pier 82 Where they boarded a ship. They went completely round the Island On a three hour cruise They sat still so long That they complained of a bruise. Then back to the hotel 'Twas time to pack their bags Then down to the lobby After attaching white tags. You could tell they were loaded With towels, matches, pens and soap They thought I didn't know But after all, l'm no dope. Then off to Penn Station At a terrible fast clip After walking four blocks with luggage l thought they would flip. We loaded on the Pennsy And they found it an impossible feat To relax and sleep ln a straight back seat. On arrival at Washington The group really got a treat When they boarded the C 8- O And layed back in a reclining seat. Instead of sleeping They had another ball But they didn' t know for breakfast That l give a 5:30 AM calll We are now nearing Cincinnati And my Iob is about done I can now honestly say The battle is about won. Don't take pity on me Or Miss McCurry and Mr. Gray We have enjoyed the trip, too Although we didn't act too gay.
