EMEEEUEH E EIL A strange vehicle emerged from the classroom. Pulled by four students costumed as huskies. the toboggan launched itself into the competition. lt moved on skateboards. pro- pelled by wind which was caught by a one-masted sail. This contraption was the creation of Rippowam students, an Olympics ofthe Mind team, under the direction of teach- er Pam Park. Rippowam became interested in Olympics of the Mind during the fall of 1980. lt is a creative problem-solving prov gram encompassing grades K-12. Throughout the year. students from our Upper School participated on a self-se- lective basis as part of Allied Arts. Five problems are sup- plied to subscribing school and teams of five students meet during school hours to attempt solutions to the various problems. Regional meets are scheduled throughout the school year. The sled contraption was a problem called Windy Cool Rod. This year's team. consisting of Tom Grant, Tim Kelly. Adam Tweedy, Peter Hawkins and Sam Whitehead, solved the challenge of Cruppets. an invitation to write a puppet play which had to include a celebrity. The team had to write a script. playbill. and an advertisement. and then compete with other teams. Their celebrity was Jaws, known affec- tionately as Mr. Mouth. Other students who assisted and continue to participate in Olympics of the Mind are Anna Cathcart. Dan French, Peter Miller, Tom Kornfield, Andrew Kayer, Doreen Bent- ley, Carl Andresen, Rich Hubert, and Kaari Reierson. Facul- ty advisors are Marion Sanders and Pam Park. We wish this year's team all the luck and fun had by the 1980-81 team, whoqgnade it all the way to the competition at Albany.
