H rx A 1' A 3 4 - ------- QL Cl ' 'mmm migh grim! mimi- -mTmivi'i-mi' Cege 50143 of 865 8'CeavLJ By Ruth Wepner The theater in the small town of Osburn was swarming with village folk. Rich and poor, young and oldg all were eager to be auditors of their good friend, Harty, as he was universally called by his friends. As the old friends reunited in the rickety old showhouse, you might have been able to grasp a word or twof You het, Pete! the corn crop's goin' ter be mighty good this year! Or you might have heard the plaintive murmur of a sympathetic old lady4 Yes, deirie, it certainly is too bad that she had to die smack off. An' wi' them there li'l children hardly more'n off her knees! All of a sudden the crowd burst into wild applause. For there was Hartwell slow' ly, but alertly walking to the center of the stage. As his kindly eyes traveled from one side of the hall to the other, the assemblage hushed immediately. Hartwell, realizing and appreciating the kindly spirit of his friends, smiled, and began to speak slowly, distinctly. My friends, you cannot possibly understand my appreciation of your wonderful tribute to nie. I am sure I do not deserve it in the least. 'hBut, questioningly, shall we start? After a number of new and old songs, he requested, Now, my friends, is there a song any one of you would particularly like to hear? As silence again passed over the multitude, a frail little middlefaged woman with a sad, distant look in her eyes rose from her seat and uttered the words, Please, my friend, Mr. Hartwell, an oldffashioned song, one dear to the hearts of many here present. Mr. Hartwell, not remembering the recent death of the womans son, began to sing the pathetic old song, Mother Love Is Dearest. As the song progressed, the audience was unaware of the drawn lines which were deepening upon the womans thin face, neither the whitening of her knuckles as she grasped the arms of her seat, nor the tenseness of her entire being was noticed. Unable to conquer her grief, Mrs, Morgan fell limply to the floor. The formerly awed and attentive listeners were now in a tumult of excitement. Due to the footlights, Hartwell was unable to see what had happened, but knew some' thing was wrong.
