JINUIISPENSABLE IINDH A NS Ripon Union High School's Indians of the 1957 football season will probably go down in history as the greatest gridiron aggregation in Ripon annals. Undefeated were the bywords at the close of this great season. Ten times this team stepped onto the turf during the season, and ten times they emerged victorious. This was an exceptional colorful team, featuring the passing and ball handling of their sophomore quarterback, Doug Hall: the breakaway running of Nick Bellino, Glenn Roberts, Tom Harmon, and Lawrence Solorio: the keen blocking of Tom Harmon, and Nick Bellinoz the vicious defensive play of Clarence Winters. Gene Sinarle, Bud Sinarle, Bob Shirley, Don Risenhoover, Dan Mattos, Gary Franscella, and Bob Bianchi: the pass snagging of Glenn Roberts, Bob Olmo, Clarence Winters and Ron Brown: and the great play of another score of players. But the amazing thing about this team - with all of its stars, it played as a single, precision timed, mechanical buzz saw. Many records were set by this scintillating ball club which tromped over ten opponents. With it, Ripon copped the first Southern League Championship, They were the first undefeated, untied football team in the schoo1's history. They scored a record '74 points against Mariposa in League play. For the second straight year they finished with the two top teams in Northern Califomia in scoring with 279 points. Their opponents scored 53 points. The coach and team worked to- gether for one and the same achievements successfully for three seasons and as a re- sult the Indians have drawn regional ac- claim in the football world. Coach Ortez took over coaching varsity football in 1955 and as a result has com- piled an astonishing 26 win 1 tie 3 los record. Nick Bellino scored the initial touchdown on a fifteen yard run. Robert's try for the extra point was wide, The Indians' second touchdown was set up on an intercepted pass by Wendell Pennington who carried the ball to the five yard line. Wendy then fired a pass to standout Clarence Winters who scored the final touchdown. Bianchi's and Bellino's great defensive play won them the Player of the Week honors. Great rock'em sock 'em defensive play stole the show for the evening with Clarence Winters, Bob Shirley, Don Risenhoover, Nick Bellino, and Bob Bianchi. RIUPUN 20 ILJINIDIEN 9 Player Player of the of the Week Week CLA RENCE DA N WINTERS LIC KED THE LIONS MA TTOS Linden High School for the second straight year ran into a whale of a ballclub in the Ripon High Indians, dropping a one-sided 20 to 9 tilt. Ripon fans had much to say after watching this machine-like aggregation go to work to avenge a 14 to 0 victory gained by the Lions in 1955. One of the only three teams to defeat the Indians in Coach Ortez's three year reign. Pennington opened the scoring with a beautiful 70 yard run. Other scores were made by fleet-footed Law- rence Solorio: Bob Olmo, who scooted some 30 yards after recovering a fumble: and Glenn Roberts, who kicked two extra points. Terrific line play by the Indians' strong forward wall paved the way for all of the scores. Clarence Winters played his usual sparkling brand of ball and was assisted by the great play of tackles, Gene Sinarle, Dan Mattos: guards, Gary Franscella, Bob Shirley, and Ron Nepote: backs, Wendell Pennington, Nick Bellino, and Tom Harmon: and ends, Bob Olmo and Ron Brown. - RIIPUN 114 R110 VIISTA 0 Player Pla yer P la yer of the of the of the Week Week Week BOB B UD CLARE SHIRLEY S INARLE WINTERS RAMMED THE RAMS One of the best games witnessed at Ripon High was the initial contest between the Ripon Indians and the Rio Vista Rams which showed the Indians blasting their way through a well-coached, hard-fighting Ram eleven 14 to 0. The Rams simply couldn't match the power put up by the Ripon unit and after just five minutes had passed, Fullback Tom Harmon sprinted over from 23 yards out. Roberts kicked the conversion. The next score was a beautiful catch by Glenn Roberts off a pass from Doug Hall which went for 35 yards and the final touchdown. Glenn again split the uprights and the scoreboard read 14 to 0. Bob Bianchi, Gene Sinarle, Clarence Winters, Bob Shirley, Gary Franscella, Bud Sinarle, and Tom Harmon all played outstandingly well. RIIPON 24 IHUULMAR 6 Player Player of the of the Week Week GLENN BOB ROBERTS YANKED THE YELLOWJACKETS SHIRLEY A happy Ripon High eleven left a weakened Hilmar High in sad shape the night after their 24 to 6 romp over this top ranking ball club. Hilmar was a sadly out-classed ball club which never got started against a fast charging Indian line and scored their only touchdown on a long desperation pass in the final 20 seconds of the ball game. Tom Harmon broke the ice in the first quarter, scoring from nine yards out after Player of the Week Bob Shirley blocked a punt that set up the score. Lawrence Solorio intercepted a Hilmar aerial and scored an- other six points behind some beautiful blocking. Glenn Roberts came next with a six yard ramble after setting this score up by blocking another Hilmar punt. Nick Bellino scored the final touchdown on a six yard run behind the blocking of Tom Harmon, and Gene Sinarle. Bob Shirley, Glenn Roberts, Bob Bianchi, Dan Mattos, Clarence Winters, Tom Christensen, Gene Sinarle, just to mention a few, played brilliant ball. Lawrence Solorio and Nick Bellino were the stars for the Indiaru in their fourth straight victory as they amassed a total of 240 yards between them on running plays. Soph Bob Olmo after recovering a fumble raced 20 yards to score for Ripon. The other scores were on a 12 yard run by Nick Bellino and an 18 yard scamper by keen blocking Tom Harmon. Gene Sinarle and Bob Shirley were the standout Ripon linemen. Winters came next as the All-League end pulled ina pass from the accurate arm of Doug Hall and scampered 25 yards to pay dirt. Again the burly Ripon end hir pay dirt on a shot from All-League Halfback Glenn mberts. The next score was one of the most beautiful plays during the season. Hall faded back, found Bob Olmo in the end zone, and let fire. The big end pulled in the pigskin with a fabulous catch. Ripon had another score. Ripon lost the ball four times on fumbles. Hard running Glenn Roberts, brilliant all around footballer led the parade with three touchdowns. The other touchdowns were had by Lawrence Solorio, Nick Bellino, and Bob Bianchi. The game was highlighted by blocked punts, one of the hardest plays in football. Bob Shirley, Gary Franscella, Gene Sinarle, and Clarence Winters were the boys that blocked those punts. Bob Olmo, Don Diggs, Tom Christensen, Gary Franscella, Ron Nepote, Richard Fanning, Don Risenhoover, and Dan Mattos were defensive standouts. RIHPUN 58 NEWMAN 6 Player Player of the of the Week Week TOM GENE E WARRIORS HARMON WALLOPED TH SINARLE And so they did! Sophomore Doug Hall passed his way through the Newman Warriors defense to lead the Devastating Indians to their overwhelming 38 to 6 victory over the Warriors from Newman. Hall's pa ing, added to the tremendous spirit of the complete Indian unit, brought the worst defeat to Newman in the two schools' arch rivalry and revenge for the only defeat of the Indians 1956 football season when Newman won on a disputed play in the waning seconds of that game. Tom Harmon, in addition to playing an outstanding game on offense, crip- pled Newman on defense with eleven tackles. Gary Franscella was another outstanding defensive and offensive performer. Hall handed the ball off to Roberts who started the scoring with a 8 yard burst off tackle. The next score came about on a beautiful pass play from Hall to Roberts. This play covered '74 yards with Glenn making a fine reception and out legging his opponents. Roberts again countered on a pass from Hall in the end zone, Nick Bellino broke through the Newman defense and the Indians had another score, Hall then hit end Bob Olmo on a pass play that covered 45 yards and a score. Tom Harmon faked his way over for the next score as he struck out a hip and drew it back leaving two Newman defenders flat on their faces as he scrambled over from 34 yards out. This was sweet revenge for last year's only loss 12 to 6. Richard Fanning was a defensive standout. Roberts tallied two touchdowns, one of them a ten yard thrust and the other a four yard burst off tackle. The offensive blocking of Dan Mattos and Gene Sinarle enabled Glenn to score these touchdowns. Gary Franscella, Clarence Winters, and Gene Sinarle played outstanding football. MEMORIES OF 1957-58 SCHOOL YEAR September 15, 1957. The first day of school opened with the Freshmen wary, the Sophomores un- impresed, the Juniors debonair, and the Seniors very sophisticated. Gradually everyone settled down to the old established routines. Football was the first activity of the season. It was the first completely successful season in the history of the school. Every game was won. Another FIRST was the Homecoming Parade. Every class and organization participated by entering a float. Remember how hush-hush the Spanish Club was in making their float? They had it so far out in the country that it nearly blew apart bringing it in to the parade. Since FIRST was the theme of the parade, Mrs. Lila Buck was the Grand Marshal, having graduated with the first class of Ripon in 1912. The Class of '62 will proudly recollect their combined efforts for the winning float. The Freshmen's inspiration to duplicate the First Massacre swelled their coffers with top money. During the half time of the Homecoming game with Mariposa, there was that moment of tendemess displayed by Nick Bellino as he crowned the Varsity Queen, Joan Eckhoff. Mr, Ben Renz crowned the Junior Varsity Queen, Margaret Rea. The '74-7 victory over Mariposa put every- one in an ecstatic mood for the Homecoming Dance. We felt the pinnacle of our high school social career had been achieved by the gala affair. Remember the Big Surprise? Our Spanish teacher, Tony Martinez, was blindfolded and driven around town to initiate him into the Order of the Mystic Knights of the Sea, while everyone went out to the football field where the University of California Band formed and started playing. We were all proud to have their former drum major a member of our faculty. The Speech students started the year by taking four sweepstakes awards at the Stagg, Sacramento State, Ripon Christian, and Downey tournaments. Joanne Simas was so surprised when she won two trophies in a single tournament. Twice Ripon had a three-way tie for first place in debate. We may be small but we're mighty! A busy schedule filled the autumn calendar. October ushered in a big construction for new buildings to house home economics, music, and science and to provide additional classroom space. New locker rooms have been provided for P, E, classes. The anticipated completion date is April 30. Henceforth the face of the Ripon campus will be changed. The band dinner was a scene of merriment with movies of the highly esteemed band in parade, led by that proud, prancing drum major, George Harden. The opening of the impressive Christmas Concert stilled the audience as Mr. Delamarter, the director, raised his baton signaling action - but at that in- stant someone's music fell to the floor, Whose? Those gallant and heroic football players will never forget their banquet and the pride that swelled their hearts at the calling of their names to receive out- standing player awards. Remember that smile on Clarence Winters' face? Too numerous for these pages are the many happy and humorous incidents associated with these past occasions. Many dances were held this year. Most were well attended even though the stag line was often in- active. One of the major shuffles was the culmination of the King and Queen Contest. Remember the food that was sold at noon by each class to raise money for their candidates? The old time tradition of the Junior King and Queen winning was broken by the Freshman class. They worked very hard! Gene Medford and Shirley Franscella won the honors, Two girls experienced happy moments when the announcement came through that the Betty Crocker Homemakers of Tomorrow Contest had been won by Rae Lee Allen and that Patsy Cabral had been singled out for the D, A,R,, Good Citizenship Award. Many activities yet to come can not be recorded now. Tickets are now being sold for the Parade of Stars scheduled for later in March. Characteristic enthusiasm of the Speech students insures its success. The Girls' League Conference at Asiloman will provide some happy memories for the lucky girls selected to attend. The slumber parties for the Future Homemakers of America and the G, A, A, will not be easily forgotten. Two excited Juniors will be attending Girls' State and Boys' State. Marlene Poletti and John Love deservedly were chosen for the representation. The Bank of America award winners have been announced. The worthy Seniors are John Simas, Tom Love, Patsy Cabral, and Joan Eckhoff, What made April 12th so remarkable? Do you recall going to the Fable Room at the Covell Hotel all dressed out in your loveliest finery? Mr. Senior President who was your escort? If we could look into a crystal ball we would know who the winners of the many scholarships and awards are to be. We do know that the Seniors are anxiously awaiting the presentation of these awards, two of which are the Valedictorian and the Salutatorian. Senior Ditch Day, Bauccaleurette, Graduation Night, all of these important events, will bring nostalgic memories to the graduating class of 1958. Two new Seniors joined our class in the last semester their pictures appear lower on this page. Ripon Union High School, we are indebted to you for these memories. We know that the more we reflect upon them, the dearer they will become to us! EDITOR'S FINALE When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste: Then can I drown an eye, unused to flow, For precious friends hid in death's dateless night, And weep afresh love's long since cancelled woe, And moan the expense of many a vanished sight: Then can I grieve at grievances foregone, And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan, Which I new pay as if not paid before, But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, All losses are restored and sorrows end.
