The subjects taug The chief achieve ht and the extra e curricular activities connected with each subject can determine the success or failure of a person in the post school years. The administrators of the Ripon Union High School want each student to gain real . . . . . h. th e experience through the curricula so that each 1nd1v1dual will be able to ac leve os goals necessary for success and happiness. WESLIE A. STOUFFER Principal TUDENT GOVERNMENT The student government of Ripon Union High School, for the past fourteen years. has been patterned after the Fed- eral Government of the United States. The advisor and originator of this successful student government is the speech instructor, Mr. Ernest Poletti. The President, elected by the student body, appoints his cabinet which is as follows: vice president, secretary of records, secretary of entertainment, secretary of notifica- tions, secretary of rallys, chief justice, chief of police, baliff, supreme court. prosecuting attorney. and defense attorney. The officers perform duties as in the Federal Govern- ment system. The vice president presides over the congress. The cabinet and president may discuss bills, but only the cabinet may vote with the rest of congress. The congress is made up by the individual states, the activities and classes of the school. Two representatives from each class and each activity are elected to the congress. This school year of 1953-1954, although starting a little roughly, turned out to be a very successful year. Jim O'Berg, student body president, asked the cabinet to as- sume the duties of the police force and to enforce the laws. Action of this type by a student body president was un- precedented and proved to be successful. Two important bills were passed in congress improving the student government. One was to have all the congress, except the freshman congressmen, elected at the same time the student body president is elected. This enables congress to go in session earlier in the school year. The other bill was that all congressmen. when elected, are automatically policemen. This now gives us a law enforcement group, and a major improvement in the student government of Ripon Union High School. Some of the organization's objectives are ill to work for a good home and family life, C21 to emphasize the importance of worthy home membership, Q35 to provide wholesome individual and group recreation, and C41 to promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfactions of homemaking. The Homemakers began this yearfs activities by selling milk at noon to cover financial expenses. Other activities were a dance and a cake sale. ln November, delegates were sent to the F.H.A. state convention held at Asilomar, California. The representatives, Joanne De Weerd, Ellen Fredericksen, Marcella Rice and June Vanden Heuvel, learned about meeting procedure and received many helpful suggestions. The officers for the first semester were Ellen Fredericksen, President, Joanne De Weerd, Vice President, Jerie Jorgensen, Secretary, Delores Silva, Treasurer, Arline Ostini, Historian, and Harriet Winters, Parliamentarian. DEBATE They called it a build-up year, and rightly so, because Ripon had a team composed BOW of people in their first year of competition. We werenit supposed to win any- thing according to the odds, but we fooled the odd makers by annexing a sweep- stakes at Stockton College and another at Tracy by mid-season. Starring for Ripon were Jim O'Berg, Marilyn Vieira, Bill Colbert, Ronnie Fried- man, Janice Vander Laan, Margaret Hoff, Gloria Bianchi, Robert Richards, Loris Bringelson, and Loretta Robbins-all brought home trophies this year. Leading the group were Margaret Hoff with three trophies and Gloria Bianchi and Jim O'Berg with two trophies each. The rest named, each had one trophy by the time this copy was writtenfi Yes, they have been a great group of novices. Watch them go in 1955 and 56l 'Publication deadline prevented a full account of the debate schedule and team results.
