Yes, it is a lovely evening and a wonderful night for the play. And that reminds me that the play tonight is mighty good! I-low do I know, sir? Why, l've heard a lot about it and I know what l'm talking about. The name? Oh, it's called Our Class History and the cast is the Class of I937. Our seats are next to each other so we can enjoy the play together. Look, we're just in time. The overture is ending, the lights are dimming, and the curtain rises on the first act of a four-act play, Our Class History. Act I On a lovely late summer day, September II, I933, to be exact, seventy lshy Freshmen tried to put up a brave show before the staring glances of upper classmen. We began our school term as greenhorns but we were all there! However, our joy soon turned to sorrow for within a few months we lost a dear classmate, Estaline Lisenbee. But we froshies enjoyed our first Christmas party together and in the spring we had a swimming party and wiener roast. Say, kids, remember the boat rides? Act II What,-a feeling it was to know that we were no longer greenies. We settled right down to business and had some sales and we also had our class parties. We initiated the Freshmen before a hilarious student body. A little later, a few sophomore girls presented a skit at a student body party-proving that we already had talent. Act Illl '- We Juniors had o lot to look forward to in our third year. We gotgxour class rings and we also presented our class play, The Simple Life. We gave ci Junior-Senior Prom in May at the Tracy Inn in honor of the graduating class. Act IV ' 1 Seniors! The hope of every high school student is to become a Senior and graduate with honors. At last it was our chance. f We presented our class play, The Rowdy Gentleman, in November. Then, on March Sth, we had our Senior Strike. We went to Camp Connell where we had lots of fun in the snow. .After nine months of hard work, we attended our last day within the walls of our Alma Mater on May 28th. We held our Baccalaureate service on the evening of Sunday, May 30th. On .Iune 3rd, forty-six students were presented with their diplomas of graduation. And so ends another life drama in the school of education. Colors: Green and White. Flower: White Carnation. They were being touted tor the League Championship until they lost to o well-drilled Ceres Varsity. R Ripon won their annual Big Game with the Escalori Cougars. - . This year Ripon set an all time record turnout of football iaspirants. 'Ripon also started something new this year when they established an Indian Papoose B Team which had a good season, being beaten only by a powerful Stoekton Team. l FOOTBALL SCHEDULE AND SCORES Ripon Opponent Opponent Ripon 6 Ripon vs. Oakdale l2 40 Ripon vs. Ceres O Ripon vs. Hughson O 6 Ripon vs. Patterson l4 Ripon vs. Hilmar 6 Bl Ripon vs. Sonora 53 Ripon vs. Linden O O Ripon vs. Escalon l PLAYERS AND POSITIONS Ends Tackles Guards Centers A R. Harp BASKETBALL Varsity The varsity had a very successful season this year. While their winning streak of eleven games was not as good as that of the B's it was still very good considering the strong opposition which they played against in the County League. They won the Dirt League without a defeat and played second only to Stockton in the County League. ln the first League Play-off, Ripon came from behind to score ci decisive victory over Tracy, the winner of the West Side League, allowing them only three points in the last half. Next came the play-off with Turlock, the winner of the Modesto Sub-League, in which they were defeated by the close score of 34-28, after staging a desperate rally in the final minutes of play. B Team Setting a new record of consecutive victories, Ripon's B basketball quintet ended one of the most successful seasons in years. The winning streak was continued for fourteen straight games in winning over Linden This was also the final game in the Dirt League in which Ripon easily won the championship. The B's were also in the County League which was made up of very strong opposition. Ripon was able to place a close second to a strong Stockton team with whom they were able to gain an even break in their two-game series, losing the first game but coming back strong to win over the County League champions in the final game of the series. ln the League play-off, Ripon was pitted against Patterson. The game was played at Patterson placing Ripon at a disadvantage. The game proved to be a very close one, the lead passing back and forth from one team to the other, and at no time did more than four points separate the two teams. Ripon came out on the short end of the score losing by one point. This game snapped their winning streak, but they made a record Ripon may well be proud of. C Team The C's this year had a very good season, under the leadership of Sterling Cowden. Luck seemed against them during their first league game which they lost to Ceres. From then on, however, they were undefeated until near the end of the season when they suffered a set-back at the hands of Hilmar. Th season ended in a three-way tie for the championship between Ceres, Hilmar, and Ripon. A play-off followed in which Ripon was victorious over both opponents, bringing home another championship for Ripon Hi. D Team The D's had a fairly successful season, also under the leadership of Sterling Cowden, starting out very poorly but finishing a first rate team. They proved them- selves worthy of this estimation by establishing a new record for light-weight scoring when they defeated Denair by the seemingly impossible score of 72-O. x 42 ,Qs XM A 9, I di BASKETBALL SCHEDULE AND SCORES Varsity B Team Ripon Opponents Ripon 40-l l Escalon l l-43 29- l 2 Manteca 22-30 28-29 Oakdale 29-24 38-24 lvlanteca l 2-l9 4l -l 3 Escalon 4-39 22-25 M. As we stop and think of these achievements we find that almost every department of our high school has been honored with some progressive deed. Let us picture for a moment, our school symbol, the Indian warrior, stepping lightly in the background with a careful even pace. Every step marks the bravery and cleverness of his life. He seems very troubled, and yet is looking forward to the next day when his tribe, the Riponians, will be on the warpath with neighboring tribes. The warrior moves quickly in the hot afternoon sun toward the athletic field, where all the young braves are practicing and drilling in athletics to harden their muscles and quicken their step, hoping someday to become as great a person as their chief. The warrior reassures himself that these men are prepared, when he remembers that a few moons ago these players lost only one out of nine league football games. The basketball players also proved outstanding, carrying off the championship title this year. As his spirits rise he quickly ascends a low hill near the village and looks down upon the gren valley below, where other Riponians tend their crops. At his right, he sees four others studying their livestock. He feels very proud of Clyde Leppard, Henry Meninga and Fred and Joe Bettencourt, because they entered the National Judging Contest at Kansas City, with their remarkable talent for iudging dairy cattle, and carried off high honors from the eastern states, returning home with the Maltby Trophy. As the warrior returns to the village he meets Ted Santos, and congratulates him for winning SSO for his prize fowls. ln the distance he hears his musicians practicing. The Ripon Band rates as one of the best music groups in the Valley, having carried off high honors from the con- test in San Francisco a few months ago. He remembers the very successful Variety Show that proved the many talents of the Riponians. Then he turns around to espy Florence McKaig carrying on an interesting con- versation with the Indian Medicine Man, telling him of the 525.00 prize she had won with her prize-winning essay, on County Maintained Hospitals. The warrior again goes on his way and approaches the tent where several Indian maidens are weaving, painting, and molding beautifuly pottery. These artists are winning many prizes at the State Fair every year. The masks completed by Elaine Brink and Elnora Wilburn were recently purchased by the De Voe Paint Company and are being shown in many art magazines. This company also purchased paper plates designed by Harold De Jong, Evelyna Brocco, and l.avina lsert. As the warrior continues on, he passes a young maiden, Christian Vanden Akker, who was rewarded a trip to the National Capital for being the select maiden of Cali- fornia to represent the Daughters of the American Revolution. And in this connec- tion, he was proud to remember that Dorothea Schmidt came off with high honors in a recent contest sponsored by this organization. Night finds the Indian Chief satisfied that his tribe is prepared for Life's battle. He realizes of course that many are being honored in their various fields but he also realizes that these honors represent the high school as a whole. These individual honors mark the achievements of Ripon Union High School. Gertrude Vanden Akker, HERE 'AND THERE 1. Yum! Yum! 2. Reta's sure getting it! 3. Office girl! 4. Tubby and How! 5.
