Modern civilization is at present digging among the ruins of a once powerful and colorful nation, in the hope of finding old relics and wonders of that people, so that it may bring back memories to the present civilization of the bygone and almost forgotten World. Therefore, We of the Mission Staff with this issue of the Mission to be a relic of the past to the Senior Class and that it may bring back memories of a once powerful and colorful Senior Class, in the Ripon Union High School. Cur Class History Mm If you can remember as far back as 1930 when we, seniors now, verdant frosh then, entered the big Institution of Ripon High School, with Miss Bengtson as our worthy commander, who so willingly helped us to begin our successful high school career, you will remember that then, as usual, all freshmen were green, but we were an exception to the rule because we were not as green as we looked. We, the high and mighty seniors of 1934, all agree that our freshman year contained the happiest days of our whole high school life. OUR SOPHOMORE YEAR In the fall of 1931 we came back as Sophomores and certainly were proud of it. Nothing pleased us as much as a chance to initiate the Frosh. Our advisor, Miss Bengtson, left school, and so we drew the worthy Mr. Milam as our advisor. With his help we gave our class party, which was a great success. 1 First Semester Second Semester Genevieve Pratt. ........... ........ . President ..... ...........,... Our Junior-Senior Sport Dance, held at Hotel Wolfe in Stockton on May 5, was the talk of the school. Our Junior Play, Suicide Specialist, given in March, was a great success. We not only took honors in athletics, but in scholarship as well. VVe ended the Junior year with a picnic at Twain Harte. First Semester Second Semester Ched Kolak ........... ...., . Although we weren't so many in number as when we entered as freshmen, we certainly let the other classes know we were there. Our senior play, Be An Optimist , was said to be one of the best plays ever presented. After much heated discussion our Senior Ditch Day was held in March at San Francisco. It turned out to be one of the best times we have ever had. The Juniors honored us with a sport dance on May 18. Baccalaureate services were held at the Swedish Mission Church, and then came Graduation on May 31. First Semester Second Semester Howard Stuart. ....... ......... P 1'CSiClC11f--.- .... ......... I Many members of the Senior Class have been outstanding in Scholarship and Athletics. Those leading in Scholarship in the four years were Ruth Eastburg, John Poelstra, and Howard Stuart. Athletic honors for the boys were taken by Ched Kolak, Eugene Anderson, and Ralph Anderson. The Senior Class girls took many honors as a group. Those individuals that took part were Ruth Hutchinson, Genevieve Pratt, Ercell Stuart, Ingomene Maskus, Eleanor Fontes, and Evelyn Leppard. Thus fades the high school career of the class of 34, but the memory of the four years in high school will remain with us forever. Then on March 16 we presented our Junior Play, The Charm School. The leading parts were taken by Carroll Keirn and Marie Santos. In this play Carroll taught young girls how to be charming. As is to be expected, we followed our play by a cast party held at the Stouffer residence with the boys of the cast acting as hosts. Another class party was held on April 125 this time in the form of a skating party. Then on May 18 the climax of all events was reached when we gave our junior-Senior Prom. This was held on the Roof Garden of Hotel Wolfe in Stockton. Thus an eventful year ended for the Juniors. me Sophomores Class of Green and Gold CLASS OFFICERS First Semester Second Semester Gertrude Lisenbee. ........... ............. Decorations and refreshments were all of Christmas motifs. The Sophomores this year have shown a great deal of hospitality toward the Freshmen by welcoming them with a party instead of an initiation, which otherwise is customary. The party was held on April 20, and proved to be a huge success. E ugene Berry The Junior High has had two parties this year. One was a Hallowe'en party given on October 28, 1933. After going through the Chamber of Horrors, Hallowe'en games were played throughout the evening. Refreshments were served later in the evening. Our next art is to be a swimmin Dart held at Stockton. This re ort P Y 8 l Y P having been written up before our second party, we are unable to write about it. The Junior High decided they wanted a stage of their own. The school board gave us a platform, so next we needed curtains. A program was given on February 9, 1934. Recitations were given, followed by some tumbling by the girls' gym class. Selected numbers were played by the Junior Orchestra. A negro comedy was given, called Ammonia White vs. Rastus Jones. W'e made 154473. Everyone took part in our program and enjoyed it very much. SPORTS The Junior High boys have been playing different games against a number of schools all year. We started out with football, playing the high school, Manteca, Salida, and Escalon several times, and lost only a couple of games. Then we played basketball, practiced a lot, and played different teams. Once in February we played in the Stockton Y. M. C. A., and went swimming afterwards. Now we are prac- Page Twenty-three ticing on baseball. We played the grammar school and are going to play the Chris- tain School Friday, April 13. VV e hope to be lucky and win the game, although it is on Friday, the 13th. Later games will be played against Salida, Atlanta, and the River School. The athletic season will close with a combined track meet among the various grammar schools around Ripon. The girls' gym class started out this year by playing volley ball. Several games were played with the Freshmen. Next we started to play basketball. After practicing a while we played the Frosh and won a few games. We are now practicing baseball. We haven't played any other classes yet, but hope to shortly, and We will try our best to Win. As soon as the tennis courts are cleaned off we will start playing tennis. Then We are going to have a tennis, archery, and horseshoe tournament. Page Twenty-foul' vw-fr: 1144 wx 'gaf ' ' . +1 x - x x 1 Q1 11 9 ' 4 4 Www? The lack of able substitutes was responsible for the majority of games being lost. The first game was played with Stockton High reserves and it tuned up the regulars and gave the inexperienced boys a chance to see what the game was like. Ripon won the game, 6 to 0. In the opening league game Ripon did not fare so well, losing to Ceres, 20 to 0. In the first home game Ripon made their best showing of the year, defeating Hilmar 19 to 0. Later in the season they held the Hughson gridders, the league champions, to a 6 to 0 score, and wound up the season with a 19 to 6 defeat at the hands of their old rival, Escalon. Coach Heath is looking forward to a more formidable showing next season as there will be ten lettermen left over for the 1934iseason. The line functioned exceptionally well. In the backlield Fred Bettencourt, who was shifted from guard to fullback late in the season, made a splendid showing. Rats Kolak, our passer supreme, won a position as left half on the All County team. 'The varsity, line-up was as follows: center, Bill Farschong guards, Herman Ahles, Harvey Douma, and Leroy Williams, tackles, Donald Epperson and Howard Stuart, ends, Mike Fitzgerald and Ched Kolakg fullbacks, Captain Bill Ferriera and Fred Bettencourtg halfbacks, Rats Kolak and Carrol Keirng quarterbacks, Bob Hutchinson and joe Olvera. The substitutes who saw a good deal of service were: Herbert Den Dulk, Steve Navarro, Jim Stinehart, Roland Dalman, Albert Zanutto, and Albertus Kamps. The season was a very unusual one as the teamsi of the Modesto Sub-League dropped out one by one until Ripon was the only one left and thus was awarded the Dirt League Championship. Having onl ractice ames, the varsit did not concentrate so much on win- L-, Y P 8 Y ning the games as on the idea of getting the practice and experience for the league play-off with Denair High School, who happened to be the winner of the West Side League. In the play-off, Ripon started off with a bang and managed to hold the lead until late in the third uarter when Denair sank three consecutive Held oals, q 3 giving them a margin which Ripon could not overcome. It was a very fast game, and due to the lack of substitutes which could be sent in to ive the regulars a rest, g an Denair won by a score of 29 to 21. Captain Gene Anderson led the Held in scoring, while Ched Kolak played .a bang-up game at guard all season. l The varsity line-up was: forwards, Deward Tornell and Ralph Anderson, center, Captain Gene Anderson, guards, Carroll Keirn and Ched Kolakg substitutes, Mike Fitzgerald and Howard Stuart. . Q' ' A The B team line-up was: forwards, Howard Anderson, Neil Cedergren, Al- bertus Kamps, and Paul Camoiranog centers, Jim Stinehart and Ray Lealg guards, Captain Rats Kolak, Ray Turnquist, and Fred Bettencourt. Most of these boys will be playing on the varsity next year. Page Forty-four Top, Varsity Basketball - Center, B, C, and D Basketball - Bottom, Track Page Forty-fi The C and D teams played a full schedule of games and gained some useful experience for future years. The C team was successful in defeating each of its opponents once, though it did not win the championship, while the D team contented itself with one lone victory over the league-winning Patterson team. . C team: Captain Ray Leal, Ray Turnquist, Gene Kelly, jack Hitch, Leon Fontes, Eric Olson, and Bob Hutchinson. D team: Captain Karris Keirn, Richard Pasma, Joe Bettencourt, Max Haller, Nick Tocco, and Mike Stuart. A T I' a C if if For the first time in a number of years Ripon had a track team. Dual meets were held with Linden and Escalon, a team was entered in the small schools meet at Escalon, a team was entered in the County Novice Meet held at Oakdale and Modesto, a nine man team was sent to the County Meet held on the M. J. C. track, and two men will be sent to the C. C. H. S. A. L. Meet to be held at Modesto on May 12. ' Due to the lack of experience and a late start because of the lateness of the basketball season a well rounded team was not developed and Ripon won no meets this year. As there were only a few Seniors who competed, most of the boys developed this year will be ready to start out where they left off. In the County Meet Bill Slikker tied for Hrst in the high jump in Class C with a leap of 5 feet Byiinches. Neil Cedergren took second in a record breaking 1320 yard run in Class B, and Rats Kolak placed fourth in the football throw in the same class. Slikker and Cedergren were entered in the C. C. H. S. A. L. Meet and were expected to place high. ma Baseball Due to the proposed plans of working over the school grounds by the C. W. A., Ripon withdrew from the regular baseball league this year but expects to enter a team again next year. A softball league composed of Tracy, Oakdale, Manteca, and Ripon was formed and gave the baseball players a chance to take part in one form of their favorite sport. z Page Forty-Six The Girls' Athletic Association I and Girls' Athletics The G. Basketball season turned out to be very exciting, with the season ending in a tie for first place between the Seniors and Freshmen, and a tie for second between the Juniors and Sophomores. This year's varsity consists of the following: forwards, Ruth Hutchinson, Eleanor Fontes, Frances Kincaid fsubstitutejg centers, Evelyn Leppard, Genevieve Pratt, Miriam Spuller and Georgene Osborne Csubstitutesjg guards, Ingomene Maskus, Ercell Stuart, Elsie Hekman Csubstitutej. The girls held a play day at Tracy, where a variety of sports were enjoyed by all. Tennis and baseball look like they will be very hotly contested. The girls are also taking a big interest in track. . Through the help of our instructor, Miss Armstrong, we are able to accomplish all these sports. As a Fitting climax for a very successful year of sports, the girls had a swim- ming party at the Modesto Plunge, which was enjoyed very much by everyone. Page Forty-eight Top, G. A. A. Ex.
