A Lull In The Apathy — Great Hall was packed to the rafters for Air Guitar. The Merrimen took their second con- secutive first place in the contest. Below are other groups that made it to the finals. Sue Kramer performs What are you trying to do to my heart? with the Theta Sigma Tau air band. The Lads from Liverpool (Bill Burgess. Gary Judson. Dave Taylor, and Rich Gee) had to fight off hordes of adoring groupies” during “She Loves You” and 1 Want to Hold Your Hand. Black and Blues brothers Steve Harris and K. Swimmers Go 5-4 Under ihe direction of coach Chuck Larson, the 1983 swim team finished with a 5-4 record, placing 3rd in the Knox Invitational, and 8th at the MC Championship, and winning the Wis. Small College State Championship. The first meet of the season was a close call with Carroll. Ripon came out just short of Carroll’s 51 points with 49. Senior Doug Christensen took the 200 and 500m freestyle and was part of the 1st place relay team with Jay Dcady. Bill Summerville, and Marty McAullifc. Dcady was also the first place finisher in the 100m butterfly, and Kevin LaMarche won the 200m individual medley. Ripon won the next meet against Lawrence. 64-44. Deady placed 1st in the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly. Christensen took the 1000m freestyle and 500m freestyle. Marc Roly- son placed 1st in the 200m IM and breastrokc. and Bruce Hora won both the required and optional diving events. Robson was the sole winner against Mich. Tech., taking the 200m IM as Ripon lost the event 87-27. Hora won the required and optional diving events. Goldim took the 50m freestyle, and Christensen won the 1000 and 500m frees- tyle events as Ripon defeated Lake Forest 58-47. Carleton came out on top as Ripon fell to the swimmers in their next meet. 87-25. Hora again took the required and option- al diving events in a 67-38 loss to Knox. Knox went on to win their own invitational with 101 points. Ripon took third with 71. Hora look the diving events at the tournament. At the Wisconsin Small College State Championships, Ripon scored 312 points to win the event. Carroll came in second with 26+. Christensen took first in the 1650 and 500m freestyle, and Deady won the 100m butterfly and 400m IM. Ripon won the next meet against Lawrence. 66-45. Hora won the diving events. Summefvillc won the 1000 and 500m freestyle, Robson took the 200m breastroke and IM. and McAullifc won the 200m freestyle and backstroke, and Dcady won the 100m butterfly. Hora. Dcady. Summerville, and Robson repeated those performances in the next meet with Carthage as Ripon won 65-43. Hora took the optional and required diving events. Deady won the 1000m freestyle and 200m butterfly. Robson won the 200m IM. and Goldin took the 50m freestyle as Ripon beat Beloit 62-49. The final challenge of the season came at the Midwest Conference Championships. Grinnell won the event with 506Vi points. Ripon finished with 117. giving them 8th place. Searvogel Becomes An All-American Assisted by Keith Timmel. who holds the 2nd best won Iost record in RC history, head coach Nort Krausse led the '83 grapplers to a 5th place finish in the Midwest Conference. The Redmen opened their season against Marananlha. Pat Hornicklc. wrestling at 118. won 8-2. Krist Enstrom (126) defeated his opponent 13-6. Craig Maxwell, who was 3rd in the MC and received a bid to Nationals last year, won 17-4. and Stieg Theander (142) won 12-2. Adrian Dinwiddie won by forfeiture. Ripon placed 4th at their next meet, the Carroll Invita- tional. Hornicklc was the sole individual champ. Maxwell took 2nd. Theander took 4th. and Kurt Searvogel won 3 matches. The Vikings were victim to Ripon in the next meet, losing 12-37. A 5th place finish at the Elmhurst Invitational was next. Hornickle placed 2nd. going 1-1. Maxwell went 3-0. Searvogel went 3-0. Enstrom. Theander. and Scott Stewe were also victorious. The Red- men went on to place 2nd at the Maranantha Invitational, and then suffered two losses at the hands of UW-SP. 32- 12. and UW-0. 51-1. At the Maranantha Invitational. Hor- nicklc pinned 2 opponents. Enstrom drew a bye and pinned his opponent in the ftnal round. And Jon kostelic won 3 matches. In the UW-SP match-up. Hornicklc. En- strom. and Searvogel were all winners. Ripon tied for 1st place honors with Elmhurst at the Ripon Invitational. Hornicklc. Enstrom, and Maxwell were individual champs. Kostelic (142). Dave Presuhn (150). and Daryl Conklin (190) all took 3rd. Marquette dealt the Redmen a loss. 36-15. Then.the grapplers went on to lake 2nd at the Lawrence Invitational. Hornickle was named the tour- ney's outstanding wrestler. Other winners were Enstrom and Maxwell. A 5th place finish at the MC Championships closed out the season. Hornicklc look 2nd. and Maxwell and Enstrom took 3rd. Kurt Searvogel defeated 2 oppo- nents and pinned his 3rd to take individual honors. That win gave berth to the All-American status he received in Division III. He was 6 in the division. 30
