Winter seemed to come and go this year over, and over again. Temperatures stayed up in the forties and fifties all through November and De- cember. No doubt professors in the lower campus had their best attendance in years. Christmas Day was in the sixties all over Wisconsin. January on the other hand, was its usual self, and February started off with a tremendous snow storm. But by Winter Weekend it was warm again and the snow was going fast. Then Easter was in April, and you guessed it. we had snow. I guess this is enough talk about weather to be a letter to your grandma. But that was THE WINTER THEWINTERTHE Masochism in paradise • Kris Schultz and Jeanne Schlilz. Kevin Doherty. Todd Kell, and Todd Bucher. Are you guys sure you wanted “This is worse than a Scott exam! that ear pierced? -Bob Bechard A competition between the Greek groups for beer and pizzas made the winter blood drive into a great success. The line was two hours long until the Red Cross ran out of collection bags. The total for the day was 300 pints. 24

26 Redmen Look To Brighter Future Under the direction of coaches Bob Gillespie. Chris Ogle, and Greg Capper, the 1982-83 basketball team com- bined overall talent and depth but could not quite muster enough of whatever it takes to end the season with a winning record. Head coach Gillespie came off his best recruiting year ever, with two of his top recruits. Jay Erdman and Tom Reader, as the teams leading scorers, with 361 and 318 points respectively. The re- turn of Owen Glodowski after a year at UW-SP gave Gille- spie some hope. But the 3rd top scorer was not enough. The Redmen faced some very tough competition this year from teams that have not been a challenge in previous years. After suffering a few losses in the beginning of the season to such teams as Marion and Lakeland, the team settled down to defeat Lake Forest on Jan. 26. outscoring their oppo- nents by 20 points. Chris Jen- sen led the Redmen attack with 20 points and 9 rebounds as Ripon beat the Univ. of Chi- cago. On Feb. 9 the Redmen hosted a tough Lawrence squad who kept close to the Redmen throughout the game and escaped with a win at the buzzer. The last victory of the season came at Lake Forest. The Foresters had not lost a game since their loss to Ripon earlier in the season. Glodowski led the way with 27 points. Chuck Soule’s layup at the buzzer was just what “Gilly” ordered. But the Redmen could not compete with a hard-fighting Univ. of Chicago squad and despite Reader’s 16 points, the Maroons defeated the Redmen 71-59. The final game of the season was another nip and tuck situation with the Vikings, and again the Larries came out on top by two at the buzzer.
