Ruggers End Fine Season At 3-3 Riding on the strength and size of many returning ruggers as well as the hard work of the many underclassmen, the 1982-83 men’s Rugby Team fin- ished a successful season at 3-3. The B side ended the season at 2-1. On Sept. 11. the club faced UW-Madison and were defeated. The B squad, however, returned to Ripon with a 17-9 win. In games on Sept. 18, the R.R.C. dropped two to UW-Eau Claire. The A side was defeated 26-8 and the B side suffered a 14-8 loss. But that is where the losing streak ended. Carthage College was the first victim, losing 25-13. Mike Hartley. Mike Albertson, and Fred Gi- rard did a fine job filling in for three starters who missed the first half due to car trouble. With a 6-0 lead going into the second half, the ruggers held on for the win. Mike Dunlap was the top scorer for the game with 1 try, 2 conversions, and a free kick totalling 11 pts. Dunlap. Todd Osadjan, and Biff Murphy were credited as players of the game. The Green Bay Rugby Club was dealt a loss on Homecoming, going down 6-16. President Jon Credit was sure that the scrum would have to play hard in order for Ripon to come off with a win, and that it did. Scott Pohl- mann, Chris Lundbcrg, Kourosh Sa- frang. Rob Kalbaugh, Brian McAuliffe. Credit and Hartley made up the scrum who played so well in “the best game of the year.” according to Credit. Play- ers of the game were Lundberg at hooker and Pohlmann at prop. Before the games with G.B., the ruggers re- turned from Milwaukee with a B side victory (4-0) and an A side loss (12-6) to a very experienced and older team. The final game of the season came on Nov. 13 when the club traveled to Plat- teville and returned with a 16-7 victory despite terrible conditions. Chris Lundberg and Todd Osadjan had great games. The fall season was termed as a rebuilding one for the club. With the practices in the spring and the return of many key players, the ruggers look forward to a great '83-'84 season. Keith Timmel tries to grab the ball In a match last fall. Jay Armstrong awaits the outcome. Bot- tom. right: Rich Corzatt gets a hand on the oppo- sition as Mike Albertson waits to help. t I I t ’82-’83 Women Ruggers Encounter Tough Schedule Despite a slim schedule, The 1983 Women’s Rugby Team gained ground this year in what is traditionally an all- male sport. Led by president Juli Welk and organizer Carol Wattleworth, the ruggers comprised a 0-3 record in the fall, but ended the season with a score of vet- erans who will be ready to play next fall. Among them are Welk. Michou Braun, Nadine Kingston, Bonnie Koss, Bren Schultz, freshmen Laura Mullins, Jill Overdorf, Alicia Howland, Ginger Cos- tello, and Joan Baumgartner, and junior Donna Reardon. The team made a powerful showing against Illinois State before facing the strong scrum of the University of Ste- vens Point. The Redmen lost that game 8-4. Their final game of the season went to the University of Illinois-a 24-0 deci- sion.
