“In a way, looking at the future is like looking at a cake. Until you've tasted it, what do you know? And then it's too late.” Merlin in Excalibur Well, on August 23. 1982 we blew out the candies at the birthday of another achool year. And then, whether we wanted to or not, we all got a taste of the cake. There were mixed reactions. Some of us immediately declared ourselves on a diet. Some only ate the frosting. The administration picked out the nuts. A few went up for seconds. And the rest ordered out. And then the party was over. It had started. THE FALL OF 1982 THEFALLTH Everything was a little crazy at first, of course. There were new faces and new rooms to get used to. But the familiar things resurfaced quickly. There was the obligatory rain for the first seven days to do wonders for homesick people’s morale. Some of the new people: Ellen Hauert and friend, and at right. Lynn Kahney and Connie Redmann. 6 FALL

A good time was had by all the s enc majors who got together for the annual Farr Outing down at the Mill Pond. Unfortunately, the humidity was a little high. Shortly after the annual return to Ripon at the end of August, the Orienteering Club began making plans for the fall season. A small team, but hardcore orienteers indeed; Stacy Heinrich. Jack Winner. Shirley Hunter. Joel Norton, and Tamara Winter trekked to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan for the Midwest O' Championships Labor Day weekend. Early October found the team at Chicago's (and aptly named) Bramble Ramble, Accompanied by CPT Platt Boyd as he attended his last U.S. orienteering meet before transferring to Germany. Truly dedicated, the team even forfeited the first day of their fall break to attend the Wisconsin State Championships at Fort McCoy. The most noteworthy accomplishment of the group was to advance to the more challenging Red Course from the Orange Course they tackled only one short year ago. Jack Witmer (above) and Stacy Heinrich (left) cross the finish line of another grueling course, maps in hand. The Judges were back at their old bench in front of the commons, and a few guys lost their hair. We were back. The Judges: Mark Korteboin. Joe Wells, and Vince Torres. And at right; Misko Dragin.
