And then, whether we wanted to or not, we all got a taste of the cake. There were mixed reactions. Some of us immediately declared ourselves on a diet. Some only ate the frosting. The administration picked out the nuts. A few went up for seconds. And the rest ordered out. And then the party was over. It had started. Shortly after the annual return to Ripon at the end of August, the Orienteering Club began making plans for the fall season. A small team, but hardcore orienteers indeed; Stacy Heinrich. Jack Winner. Shirley Hunter. Joel Norton, and Tamara Winter trekked to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan for the Midwest O' Championships Labor Day weekend. Early October found the team at Chicago's (and aptly named) Bramble Ramble, Accompanied by CPT Platt Boyd as he attended his last U.S. orienteering meet before transferring to Germany. Truly dedicated, the team even forfeited the first day of their fall break to attend the Wisconsin State Championships at Fort McCoy. The most noteworthy accomplishment of the group was to advance to the more challenging Red Course from the Orange Course they tackled only one short year ago. FALL 9 Gridders Defeat Lawrence And Clinch Midwest Conference Title Conference Record Goes Unvarnished After losing the first two games of the season by a total of three points. the Rtpon College Rcdmen came on strong with eight straight wins to capture the division and conference titles. With a 16-14 win over Cornell, the pigskinncrs became the Midwest Conference champions after beating arch-rival Lawrence 23-20 the week before. The road to victory was not an easy one for the Rcdmen. who were 7-2 on the season. The first game of the season took the gridders to Whitewater where they were defeated 22-20. The following week they traveled to Plaitoville and returned after suffering a 21-20 loss. The Rcdmen hosted Monmouth on Parent's Day and walked away with an im- pressive 35-20 victory. The next five weeks were filled with excitement as the team moved closer and closer to their prized Northern Division Championship. The Redmen downed Coe. St. Norbert. Lake Forest (24-0 before a packed Homecoming crowd). The team held the Foresters to only 13 total rushing yards in that game. Tim White carried the ball 43 times for 232 yards and two touchdowns as the team killed the University of Chicago 54-0. Ripon's volleyball team succeeded this season. Last year, when the Red wo- men won the conference and fin- ished 19-3 overall head coach Elaine Coll said she had coached her best team ever.” Coll feels that the 1982 spikers were even better. On Saturday. October 30. Ripon won the Wisconsin Inde- pendent Colleges-Women's Ath- letic Conference tournament held at Wyman Gym and finished the season 16-3 overall. The Redwomen entered that tournament with a perfect.8-0 mark in WIC-WAC play. The tournament featured the top two teams from the Northern and Southern Divisions. Ripon topped Concordia College 3-1 in the first of the best of five matches — ral- lying to win from a 4-12 deficit in the fourth game to close out the Match. Next. Ripon blasted pre- viously unbeaten Mount Mary in three straight, before meeting arch-rival St. Norbert in the final match The Redwomen bested the Green Knights for the fourth time to date, winning three straight. They defeated St. Norbert 3-2 but lost to Whitewater by the same margin. In a scrimmage against UW-Oshkosh 3 days later, the squad prevailed to beat the Ti- tans 3-2. On Sept. 17. the Green Knights of St. Norbert won one- game to Ripon's three in the best of five. Halfway through the-sea- son the team held an 8-3 record, good enough for first place, which is where they ended up after matches with Lawrence, lakeland. Concordia, and Mar- ion. First place finisher was St. Norbert. Leading up to their season end. the Rcdwomen had ac- cumulated a 3-0 WIC-WAC record. On Sept. 15 the neiters defeated reigning champ St. Norbert in a dual match 5-4. In the ACM tournament the Rcdwomen tallied 16 points to finish second ehind Carlcton. who had 27 points. Other match scores included a loss to UW-Stc- vens Point in a dual meet (the score was 9-0.) and a victory over UW- Green Bay on Sept. 29. The final score was 5-4. The Redwomen were pleased with their performance, commented one member: it really came down to the wire, but St. Nor- bcrl's was able to pull ahead.” Men’s Lacrosse - Rough And Ready The basic idea of the fall Lacrosse program is to practice for the upcoming spring season in which teams compete for the honor to reign as champ. The fall Lacrosse team usually schedules 3-5 games including a 2-game tournament in Whitewater. This past season the team was defeated by Whitewater and Northern Illinois University at the UW-W tourney. The other team that was present was Madison. The Redmen also traveled to Madison and suffered a loss in the capitol city. The teams that the team faces in the fall are totally awesome according to one player. Bob Murphy commented on the new blood that came out for the team this past fall: They will hopefully grow to be a strong part of future teams at Ripon.” FALL 15 While You Were Out ... - “Christian” militiamen massacred 800 Palestinian civilians in Lebanon - Leonid Brezhnev died after an 18 year tenure, and Yuri Andropov took his place as leader of the Soviet Union - Prince William Arthur Philip Louis, heir to the British throne, was born to Prince Charles and Princess Diana - Princess Grace of Monaco, known in Hollywood as Grace Kelly, died in a car accident in France - Ronald Reagan was in the third year of his presidency - Seven people died in Illinois when they took Extra Strength Tylenol that was laced with cyanide - The Milwaukee Brewers went to the World Series for the first time since 1958, but lost to the St. Louis Cardinals - The Nation suffered its highest unemployment rates since the depression - The football season was delayed by the NFL players strike - The space shuttle program became fully operational with the first launch of a satellite by a reusable spacecraft, the shuttle Columbia - Video game arcades, personal home computers, video disc players, and cable tv became a common part of our environment m - Disposable watches came out on the market, usually for under $6.00 - M A S H ended its eleven year run on television with a two hour special that broke the all time record for largest share of the audience - The long awaited third film in the Star Wars saga, “Return of the Jedi” was released - E.T. the extraterrestrial, outgrossed Star Wars to become the biggest moneymaking film of all time. Kicking Up A Storm-Women’s Soccer With the combined leadership of senior Kati Wanik and alum Barbara Scott, the 1982 women’s soccer team proved to be much improved. Although their schedule was slim, the kickers were happy with the season. Results of the 3 games were a 3-0 loss with a 3-1 loss to Beloit and a 2-0 loss to a tough Lawrence club. Key players on this year’s club were Wanik, sophs. Mary Neice and Moira Duffey, and frosh Robyn Hardt. The team’s only goal came from frosh Connie Kempen. Men’s Team Finishes In Second Place The 1982 men’s soccer team finished a successful season with a 8-3-1 record. Key players for the ’83 kickers were soph. Bo Safrang, seniors Randy Pufahl and Kip Love, frosh Jay Brennan, and co-captains Greg Bolin and Gary Page. Fan support, hard work on the part of the team, and the dedication of coach Dave Scott were credited for the success. The team continues in its quest for a conference championship; they settled for a second place tie behind Carleton. 20 t I I t ’82-’83 Women Ruggers Encounter Tough Schedule Despite a slim schedule, The 1983 Women’s Rugby Team gained ground this year in what is traditionally an all- male sport. Led by president Juli Welk and organizer Carol Wattleworth, the ruggers comprised a 0-3 record in the fall, but ended the season with a score of vet- erans who will be ready to play next fall. Among them are Welk. Michou Braun, Nadine Kingston, Bonnie Koss, Bren Schultz, freshmen Laura Mullins, Jill Overdorf, Alicia Howland, Ginger Cos- tello, and Joan Baumgartner, and junior Donna Reardon. The team made a powerful showing against Illinois State before facing the strong scrum of the University of Ste- vens Point. The Redmen lost that game 8-4. Their final game of the season went to the University of Illinois-a 24-0 deci- sion. The B side ended the season at 2-1. On Sept. 11. the club faced UW-Madison and were defeated. The B squad, however, returned to Ripon with a 17-9 win. In games on Sept. 18, the R.R.C. dropped two to UW-Eau Claire. The A side was defeated 26-8 and the B side suffered a 14-8 loss. But that is where the losing streak ended. Carthage College was the first victim, losing 25-13. Mike Hartley. Mike Albertson, and Fred Gi- rard did a fine job filling in for three starters who missed the first half due to car trouble. With a 6-0 lead going into the second half, the ruggers held on for the win. Mike Dunlap was the top scorer for the game with 1 try, 2 conversions, and a free kick totalling 11 pts. Dunlap. Todd Osadjan, and Biff Murphy were credited as players of the game. The Green Bay Rugby Club was dealt a loss on Homecoming, going down 6-16. President Jon Credit was sure that the scrum would have to play hard in order for Ripon to come off with a win, and that it did. Scott Pohl- mann, Chris Lundbcrg, Kourosh Sa- frang. Before the games with G.B., the ruggers re- turned from Milwaukee with a B side victory (4-0) and an A side loss (12-6) to a very experienced and older team. The final game of the season came on Nov. 13 when the club traveled to Plat- teville and returned with a 16-7 victory despite terrible conditions. Chris Lundberg and Todd Osadjan had great games. The fall season was termed as a rebuilding one for the club. With the practices in the spring and the return of many key players, the ruggers look forward to a great '83-'84 season. Chris Ogle, and Greg Capper, the 1982-83 basketball team com- bined overall talent and depth but could not quite muster enough of whatever it takes to end the season with a winning record. Head coach Gillespie came off his best recruiting year ever, with two of his top recruits. Jay Erdman and Tom Reader, as the teams leading scorers, with 361 and 318 points respectively. The re- turn of Owen Glodowski after a year at UW-SP gave Gille- spie some hope. But the 3rd top scorer was not enough. The Redmen faced some very tough competition this year from teams that have not been a challenge in previous years. After suffering a few losses in the beginning of the season to such teams as Marion and Lakeland, the team settled down to defeat Lake Forest on Jan. 26. outscoring their oppo- nents by 20 points. Chris Jen- sen led the Redmen attack with 20 points and 9 rebounds as Ripon beat the Univ. of Chi- cago. On Feb. 9 the Redmen hosted a tough Lawrence squad who kept close to the Redmen throughout the game and escaped with a win at the buzzer. The last victory of the season came at Lake Forest. The Foresters had not lost a game since their loss to Ripon earlier in the season. Glodowski led the way with 27 points. Chuck Soule’s layup at the buzzer was just what “Gilly” ordered. But the Redmen could not compete with a hard-fighting Univ. of Chicago squad and despite Reader’s 16 points, the Maroons defeated the Redmen 71-59. The final game of the season was another nip and tuck situation with the Vikings, and again the Larries came out on top by two at the buzzer. Silver Lake Thwarts Redwomen Hopes A bigger and better team was what head coach Elaine Coll called the 1982-83 women’s basketball team. But such a team was needed as they faced a tougher schedule than they have in past years. Coll looked to the leadership of seniors Barb Williams, Janice Heinz, Donna Crocker, and Liz O’Brien as well as other returnees such as Mary Neice. Kelly Manis, and Amy Barnes. Coll also counted on support from Patti Keene, Marsha Steffeck. and freshmen Shari Piehl, Jennifer Thomas. Connie Kempen. and Rachel (FVL??????) Mathison. Four games into the season, the Redwomen held a 3-1 record. In the opener against Lakeland, Ripon came out ahead 58-54. A 71-53 victory was on tap for the following evening against Edgewood. Edgewood was to suffer another loss to the Redwomen after the Christmas break, but this time by a much greater Margin. At the buzzer Ripon led 65-25. After defeating Beloit 67-49, the Redwomen set their sights on Silver Lake in a game that would more or less decide whether they would advance to tournament play. A game against Lawrence was all that stood between Ripon and the Silver Lake challenge. The Vikings were put down 61-47 before Silver Lake shot tournament hopes for Ripon in a hard-fought game, 72-62. Shari Piehl completed the season with 305 points, breaking Barb Williams old record of 243 in a single season. Barb Williams completed a fine career at Ripon just 34 points shy of the 4-year record of 762 held by 1980 grad Lisa Heimler. 27 A Lull In The Apathy — Great Hall was packed to the rafters for Air Guitar. There is a recurring goal, however: to provide events which may help the mem- bers of Ripon College to educate themselves about issues we have felt to be important. Included among these issues have been assertiveness training, reproductive health care and contraception, and abortion. These issues are often considered “women’s issues,’’ but, in fact, they are relevant to men’s lives as well. This year’s WESO members were overwhelmingly seniors. Those members would like to extend some wishes of good luck and perseverence to the newer members: Kathy, Kris, and Sindi,- and other interested people. -Linda Brown WESO Elizabeth Bailey Linda Brown Carol Inskeep Barb Kuhlman Anne Oldenburg Sindi Plenge Ann Rawding Kris Schultz Kathy Turner Anne Ullman SOUL Ginger Costello. The new sixteen-page magazine format allowed for more photo spreads, more feature-oriented material, and some different lay-out techniques. The Days staff also opted to publish bi-weekly, rather than weekly, hoping to increase the quality by decreasing the quanti- ty. The Days editors strove to improve the overall appearance and the quality of writing in the paper. For convenience, the Days was delivered directly to the dorms for the first time in recent years. Also, the Days worked for greater organization with a new system of section editors. Assisting the editor-in-chief, Mark Reschke, were: Dave Shogren, news editor; Ken Carlson, feature editor; Michelle Priddis and Norah Zilisch, lay-out editors; Dave Chlosta. sports editor; Loren Gustafson and Lisa Behrens, copy editors; Jay Wilcox, fine arts editor; and Lisa Ulmen, business manager. -Mark Reschke the Ri|Min £onege|)ays MED1A 61 RFS Front: Karen Williamson. The schedule included Raiders of the Lost Ark.” “Taps,” Excalibur, Warriors,” Brubaker.” Arthur,” The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” American Gigolo, Breaker Morant, “Heaven Can Wait,” and many other box office hits. The expense of the film package deal got the club off to a shaky financial start in the fall, however, and things did not improve much as the year went on. Student Senate tried to bail us out with a $2,000 grant, a Wednesday night show was added, and the admission price was increased (a quarter) to $1.50, but to no avail. Cable TV and video disc players in dorm lounges and the fact that alcohol is not allowed in the Pit both contributed a consistent lack of audiences. Of 26 films, only three - Warriors,” Excalibur,” and Rocky Horror” - showed any profit. The days of a selfsupporting Film Society are coming to an end. - Uiura Mundschau THE GOVERNMENT SMAC External Affairs Rl: Mike Guzniczak. Kris Gonynor. Mike Kelly, Bruce DeMauro, Karen Williamson. Student Senate • The Student Senate exercises the legislative and executive functions of student government on campus. Among these functions are appointing students to various faculty committees, acting as the liaison between the administration and faculty on one hand and the students on the other. It is also responsible for administering the total budget from student activity fees. For purposes of clarity and better organization, a new constitution was ratified in April of 1982.
