This year, rhe committee's rheme was variety. Program topics ranged from Sex and rhe Single Persoo, to hypnosis, to civil rights. Key speakers included rhe Rev. Dr. Ralph Abernathy, hypnotist Tom Deluca, and sex therapist Dr. Debra Phillips. The Exrernal Affairs' calendor also featured a talk by former CIA Agent Peter Jomes and o program on Subliminal Seduction by Wilson Dryan Key. Other pro- grams dealt with economics, journalism, and poetry. The committee was under rhe direction of President Colleen Zuro, Secretory Marla Schmitt, and Treasurer Pam Roe Other members include Roland Miller. Mary Rose Zingale. Mart Dilon. Kari Wonek, Marylee Dolock, Jim Rumpel, and Leigh Cohen After a year of much tension, the Student Senate began rhe 1980-81 academic year with a program of renewal ond stability. Although initiative was lacking, rhe Senate did adopt a consistent policy on residence hall staff selection and devoted some needed attention to rhe reocurring problems of rhe student medio and the problems of providing student activities. With the completion of its By-Law revision, rhe 1980-81 Senate has hopefully laid a solid foundation for a more active Senate next year. Sharon Invo Riveiro. some way to Yet another academic year has besieged good ol’ Ripon College, and from my vantage point in the Mapes Hall asylum, little has changed. The huge megalopolis in which this college is located is still a cultural wasteland that offers about the same variety of entertainment that one might find in the middle of the Gobi desert. Indeed, super- ficially Ripon is much the same as it always has been but one major change has oc- curred. Speaking as one who genuinely likes this place in spite of its shortcomings, I feel obliged to deal with it in the context of this, my first column. Believe it or not, Ripon has reluctantly slipped into the new decade with all the fervor and excitement of a snail race. It isn’t quite ready to accept the realization of this transi- tion however, and seemingly neither is the student body, the country, nor the world.
