JOHNSON PRESENTED BY ROBERT V. HANNAFORD. Ph.D. Professor of Philosophy Mr. Samuel C. Johnson is chairman of S. C. Johnson Son, Inc. (Johnson Wax) in Racine, the fourth generation of his family to serve as chairman. He is a 1950 graduate of Cornell University and earned his master’s in business administration from Harvard Business School. As organizer of the company’s first New Product Department, he helped launch a comprehensive program of diversification that has been a hall- mark of the firm’s success ever since. His many philanthropic, educa- tional, and cultural activities reflect a concern for community involve- ment that is also a family tradition. Doctor of Laws ALFRED E. KAHN PRESENTED BY JOHN LIVINGSTON, PH.D. Professor of Economics Dr. Alfred E. Kahn was appointed by President Carter in October 1978 to serve as Advisor to the President on Inflation and as chairman of the Council on Wage and Price Stability. At the time of his appointment, he was serving as chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board and had earlier served as chairman of the New York State Public Service Com- mission. Kahn received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from New York University and a doctorate in economics from Yale University. Follow- ing service in the Army, he taught at Ripon College for two years be- fore moving to the Department of Economics at Cornell University in 1947, where he remained until accepting his first government position in 1974. Doctor of Laws ARJAY MILLER PRESENTED BY TED LEYHE, M.B.A. Member of the Board of Trustees Mr. Arjay Miller served as Dean and Professor of Management at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business for ten years, until his retirement in July 1979. Before that he spent twenty-three years with Ford Motor Company, including five years as President beginning in 1963. He was graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles and spent three years at the University of California at Berke- ley as a graduate student and teaching assistant. He serves on the boards of director, of numerous businesses and organizations, including Ford Motor Company, Levi Strauss and Company, Trans World Air- lines, The Washington Post Company, Wells Fargo Co., Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Brookings Institution. Doctor of Laws JOHN B. MURRAY PRESENTED BY ERVIN A. ZIPPEL, A .B. Member of the Board of Trustees Mr. John B. Murray, a member of Ripon’s Class of 1937 and Honorary Life Trustee of the College, spent his entire forty-three-year business career with Speed Queen and its parent company, the McGraw-Edison Company. In 1933 he began work at Speed Queen in the machine shop, was promoted to purchasing agent in 1936, to executive vice president in 1954, and to president in 1959. He moved to the McGraw-Edison Company in Chicago in 1968 as Group Vice President for Appliance Divisions and became Executive Vice President until his retirement in 1976. He served as a trustee of the College for eighteen years, as a director of First National Bank of Ripon and the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. Doctor of Laws MARINA v.N.WITMAN PRESENTED BY WILLIAM J. MARTZ. PH.D. Professor of English Dr. Marina von Neumann Whitman was elected Vice President and Chief Economist of General Motors in August 1979. A summa cum laude graduate in government from Radcliffc College, she received a master’s degree and doctorate in economics from Columbia University. Prior to joining General Motors, Dr. Whitman was Distinguished Public Service Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh. She has served as a senior staff economist with the Council of Economic Advisors in 1970-71, a member of the National Price Commission in 1771-72, and is one of three members of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers in 1972 73.
