Planning began last spring for the incoming freshmen, in an attempt to make them feel more at home in the Ripon College communi- ty. New students had time to get acquainted with the academics of Ripon, as well as the social aspects. Several dances, a picnic at Lawsonia, and a concert in front of the Har- wood Union were just a few of the events. 43 ■34 4.: Homecoming Homecoming had an extra special flavor this year. It marked the 25th anniversary of Home- coming at Ripon since World War II. Many alumni from 1946 at- tended, including the queen and a court member from that year. Elenita Jackson reigned over the weekend, Ripon Revisited. The theme and the weekend cen- tered around the good old days at Ripon. 4b 46 4 The theme of this years Winter Weekend was Winter Wonderfoot. The weekend was well planned, but it will not be well remembered, due to lack of participation. Those who did attend the dance, games, and talent show and did participate in the snow sculpture con- test seemed to enjoy themselves. Hopefully next year the Union Board and Circle K will get to- gether and make it a good weekend. Winter Wonderfoot 48 Ski Weekend The Union Board again organized a February ski trip to the UP of Michi- gan. The weather was great and both Indianhead and the Porcupine Moun- tain areas had fine conditions. Friday and Saturday night they were lodged at the Indianhead Motel. On Saturday they skiied Indianhead and that night many went to a dance at Powderhorn. Sunday they packed up and traveled to Porcupine, skiing there that day and returning to Ripon that night. 49 Spring Fest, held the last Saturday in April, was again a success. The Un- ion Board sponsored sev- eral bands playing outside to entertain the students through the afternoon and during the picnic dinner. That evening there was a dance in the Union for those who wanted to make it a full day. The weather was cool, but the crowd seemed to enjoy it just the same. 50 b 5? Looking Ahead To Next Year The Ripon gridders, captained by Jerry Rey- nolds, ended the 1971 season with a 4-4 rec- ord in conference play and a 5-4 record in overall play. As a young offensive team, we had difficulty moving the ball. As the season progressed, things began to click with the victory over St. Olaf. The team traveled to Monmouth to play the game that would decide the confer- ence title. We made costly mistakes and lost it 6-27. Our last minute victory over St. Olaf was the high point of the season. CARL ETON 26- 0 CORNELL 0- 7 BELOIT (non-conference) 34- 7 ST. The team could only post a 5-4 dual record, a sixth at the Oshkosh Invita- tional and a seventh place in the Midwest Conference Championships. Jim Walley, Park Ridge, Illinois, paced the team and broke the school record for the four mile. Jim finished in the front three in every dual meet and continually broke his won rec- ords. Following Jim were returning lettermen; Ernie Kelly. John Mapoles (co-captain), Ted Harding, Roger Cotton, Bill Lewis and Gary Lederer. New runners were Jim Reiter and Ralph Schusler. Losing only two men, Lederer and Maypoles, the team looks to be in fine shape for next fall. The Soccer Club compiled a record of 1-6-1 this year. This being the second year in a row the club has had a losing record, one cannot help but think the club lacks uniformity and enthusiasm. This would be a hasty gener- alization, as the Soccer Club is not a varsity sport and cannot be compared to other fall sports. The people that played on the club did so for the love of the game and nothing was required or demanded of the players. FALL 1972 will mark the beginning of soccer as a varsity sport. With the increased competition, the caliber of the team will be greatly improved. MARQUETTE 0-3 LAWERENCE 0-1 BELOIT 0-1 UW, SP 2-1 CARLETON 3-4 LAWERENCE 2-4 UW, GB 0-4 ST. IJW. O LOST RIPON HIGH WON FOND DU LAC WON FOND DU LAC LOST UW, O LOST RIPON HIGH WON 61 1 Plagued with injuries early in the sea- son, the Redmen copped the confer- ence co-title, along with arch rival St. Olaf. Coach Wcincrt noted, “We’ve been involved in alot of pressure games and we’ve won most of them. That’s the mark of a champion.” The title is Ripon’s first since 1965 and only it’s sixth in Midwest Conference history. Through graduation, the team will loose Cooper. Saloun and Weise. Cooper was fourth best on the all-time scoring parade, while team- mate Saloun came in sixth on the list. 62 Basketball Scores Big 63 64 JU« I 00 The Ripon Tankers had a dual meet record of 9-3, beating Oshkosh, Milwaukee and Cornell, while losing to Eau Claire and arch rival Grinnell. Ripon!s season was highlighted with an out- standing performance in the conference meet at Beloit. It was obvious from the start, the battle for the crown was going to be a close and heated one. With the loss of only Bruce Haff- ner and Randy Krohn, Coach Larson is antici- pating a strong returning team and a third championship. 56 67 The Mat men ended their season with a 6-5 dual meet record. Inex- perience and the lack of manpower caught up with the young team, placing them in fifth place confer ence standing. Ripon also went against some tough teams in tour- nament competition. They cap- tured the second place title at Au- rora and again had to settle for sec- ond at their own invitational, los- ing to Carthage. Of the regulars, the outstanding duo were Trachinski, co-captain, and Kraus. With everyone return- ing next fall, the squad will be look- ing forward to a very successful season. 68 Matmen Finish Fifth 69 Bad Weather Cancels Games Despite a strong start, the baseball season was less than a success, with a 3-5 finish. Youth played a sig- nificant role in this years team and it was compli- mented by the enthusiasm of Coach Connor. Bad weather in the form of rain and snow caused the cancel- lation of many games. This dismal season was lightened by a good performance from Kneser at and behind the plate. Nakama, Hubbs and Hagedorn were excellent hit- ters, while Kessinger and Anderson were strong at the plate and on the mound. 71 Netters Battle For First 72 The Netmen showed great promise at the beginning of the season. With Ran- dy Krohn, Pete Plaushines and Walt Henry returning, the Redmen contin- ued on a string of 13 consecutive dual meet victories. Tim Kloosterbocr, Chuck Lewis, George Stevens, Dave Nimmer and Mike Jenks rounded out Coach Larson’s squad that dropped only 5 of 34 matches in the first dual meets. Having placed second in the tough Law- rence Invitational, the team will he ready for the conference meet at Law- rence. The Oles and Carls should prove stiff competition. Plaushines, Krohn, Henry and Nimmer will form the nucle- us that hopefully will bring the title again to Ripon. With all of them having string conference records in singles and doubles they will be tough to beat. Next year only Krohn and Kloosterboer will be missing from the squad and some new freshmen should keep the team in good shape for 1973. 73 Linksmen Had Ups And Downs The Linksmen had their ups and downs this year. After opening with an impressive win over Northwestern, the team has not fared as well in its’ other matches. In a quadrangular meet at Lawrence, the team finished last. In a match with Oshkosh, one of the strongest teams in the state, the team battled well and came close to an upset. With the season quickly coming to a close, two matches remain before conference. Coach Wickstrom and his forces are hopeful of a strong showing at conference and hope to better last years eighth place finish. The team looks very strong for next year with Jim Curtis, Bob Edgar, John Klingle, Tom Koepke and Chris Smith all returning to form a solid nucleus. 74 Frosh Help Track Team The Ripon College Track Team was plagued by the unpredict- able spring weather. The biggest disappointment was the cancela- tion of the Ripon Invitational, which could not be rescheduled. The team, although hurt by graduation, has scored quite well in its meets with help from a group of fine freshmen athletes to complement the returning let- termen. The freshman standouts include; Ken Ebert, Larry Holl- maier, Tom Ebert. Steve Sparks and Richard Bower. The upper- class standouts include Denny Pordon, Pete Meikeljohn, Roger Cotton, Cary Metke, Paul Yuska and Scott Bryson. The team had two assistant coaches this year, Mark Hildebrand and Mike Sal- oun, who did a fine job helping Coach Weinert. 77 78 La Crosse Due to a short spring, the LaCrosse Club only had one game against Law- rence, which they lost 1-3. Next year the Club is hoping for a longer season and may have a few games in the fall. This years team was led by Charley Brault in the goal; Fred Austin, Jeff Bigelow, and Jesse Eschenheimer at defense; Chip Romans, Curt Taylor and Sam Rulon-Miller at midfield; Ken Solarz, Ralph Schulser and Ter- ry Hoffer at attack. The team was surprised at the large number of on lookers and hopes that the enthusi- asm will continue in the future. 79 Phi Delts Cop IM Crown 80 81 'Vv J Organizations Union Board 84 85 Organizations WRPN 86 Faculty 1.
