The Ripon Mace In on impressive ceremony on November 19, 1946, ot the Scott Street Lutheran Church, the Reverend Edward N. West, canon sacrist of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine presented Ripon College with a special Mace which is to signify the invested authority of the school. President Clark Kuebler accepted the Mace for Ripon. The pageantry marked the official open- ing of Ripon College's centennial program, due to culminate in 1951. Present at the convocation was Sir Francis Evans, British Consul of New York. Sir Francis spoke on the purposes of education and compared British and American educational systems. The Mace is the gift of the Right Reverend William T. Manning, Episcopal Bishop of New York. In his presentation speech Reverend West stated, ”—the Mace was being given so that this college might have an outward and visible sign of its steadfast continuity in the tradition of its old-world namesake, the Collegium of St. Wilfred, in Ripon, England. Reverend West planned the design of the Mace. The sterling silver Celtic cross on the top of the Mace is of an old English pattern and the stone was cut from the church which St Wilfred built in Ripon, England, in 670. One face of the silver knob contains the seal of the Collegium and on the other side is the seal of Ripon College. Following the presentation Dr. Kuebler conferred the honorary degree of Dr. of Diviniiy on Reverend West and the honorary degree of Dr. of Law upon Sir Francis Evans. Rev. Edward N. West Clark I.
