The Society of Mary is the length and shadow of Father William joseph Chaminade. He slowly consumed his life in the continuous service of Mary and the religious congregation, born of his great love, has been and is a help unto future generations in her name and for her glory. The city of San Francisco has been his debtor for seventy-five diamond years. Seventy-five years of sowing and reaping from the hearts of the youth of the beloved City of Saint Francis -- a diamond harvest of great deeds. In the summer of l886, five Marianist Brothers from Saint Mary's Stock- ton, began this seventy-five years of service. At Saint joseph's Parish in the Mission, they opened the grammar school for boys. Through earthquake and depression they remained true to their calling to educate the youth and to in- crease their love and devotion to Mary Immaculate. In 1906, the Marianist Brothers began to open a high school department at Saint james while also conducting the grammer school. With the increasing de- mands made for another and still larger boys high school in San Francisco, the Marianists closed the high school department in 1949 and moved to the newly constructed Riordan l-Iigh School, a monument to the memory of Archbishop Patrick William Riordan, D.D. This is the light in which the Marianists still laborg this is the spirit which still animates them and here lies the cause of their strength. They are con- fident of eternity and they know the times in which they labor. Both here and the hereafter are to them secure if they remain true to their dedication: For the glory of the Most I-Ioly Trinity and the honor of Mary Immaculate and the sal- vation of souls. . ,swag-ay vi.
