He slowly consumed his life in the continuous service of Mary and the religious congregation, born of his great love, has been and is a help unto future generations in her name and for her glory. The city of San Francisco has been his debtor for seventy-five diamond years. Seventy-five years of sowing and reaping from the hearts of the youth of the beloved City of Saint Francis -- a diamond harvest of great deeds. In the summer of l886, five Marianist Brothers from Saint Mary's Stock- ton, began this seventy-five years of service. At Saint joseph's Parish in the Mission, they opened the grammar school for boys. Through earthquake and depression they remained true to their calling to educate the youth and to in- crease their love and devotion to Mary Immaculate. In 1906, the Marianist Brothers began to open a high school department at Saint james while also conducting the grammer school. With the increasing de- mands made for another and still larger boys high school in San Francisco, the Marianists closed the high school department in 1949 and moved to the newly constructed Riordan l-Iigh School, a monument to the memory of Archbishop Patrick William Riordan, D.D. This is the light in which the Marianists still laborg this is the spirit which still animates them and here lies the cause of their strength. They are con- fident of eternity and they know the times in which they labor. Both here and the hereafter are to them secure if they remain true to their dedication: For the glory of the Most I-Ioly Trinity and the honor of Mary Immaculate and the sal- vation of souls. . ,swag-ay vi. Ten Dedicated Years Every Riordan man knows Brother Frank Lahey, S.M. Every Riordan man knows his work as treasurer. But, engraved on a desk pen set in his office, ten years of dedicated service to the Riordan Dads' Club recalls years of achievements. ln 1951, succeeding Brother john McCluskey, S.M. then principal of Riordan, as moderator of the Dads' Club, Brother Lahey opened a new frontier of activities which augmented a much needed financial assistance and equipment for a school just begun. During the past ten years, Brother Lahey worked with seven presidents, each energetic in his responsibilities. Following Mr. jack 1. Doyle, Riordan Dads' Club first president, were Mr. Victor Bacigalupe, Mr. john Flaherty, Dr. Edward Grif- fin, Mr. Ralph Applebee, Mr. Raymond Milani, Mr. Paul Ahern, and Mr. Robert Joyce. Ten years of varied activities saw a growing school band equipped with instru- ments and uniforms, a grand piano and electric organ installed in the auditorium, bleachers erected on the football and baseball fields, the track renovated, the utility building constructed, station wagons added to the automotive department. These con- stitute a partial list of the Dads' Club accomplishments under the leadership of Brother Lahey. With the increasing demands made on his office, it was decided by the super- iors that Brother Frank Lahey's duties be lessened. We, the members of the Riordan family, congratulate you, Brother Lahey, for your ten years of devoted activity to the Riordan'Dads' Club. As a student becomes a Sophomore, he looks toward Mary for the inspiration to model himself after her. The student is just coming into Riordan's Family and Mary is the most important member that he meets. For a Crusader, his Sophomore year is his most important year. This is the year in which he will become acquainted with Mary, knowing and loving her. A true Crusader, which he should be, he is deserving of the a- wards of a Christian man. 44 Emerging from the darkness of grammar school, the Freshmen were guided through their formative years in high school by the Lamp of Knowledge. The Lamp of Knowledge showed the path to maturity, understanding, and achievement. The Ereshmen entered Riordan as starry- eyed eighth-graders. Under the patient lead- ership, the Frosh slowly emerged from their childhood dormancy. Still, the Freshmen had much to learn. Through the example of the Seniors, the Freshmen were educated in the intellectual spiritual, social, and athletic aspects of Riordan life. 7 ,ir is 1- 'iskf ., -we f, - ., ff , Y: V ' V, I' .l-.pil:3.,., ,A A 1 I I T ,vhh v,,,,. 1 2,55 A R, ., . ak ,. In the Middle Ages , if a man had proven himself to his lord, he had the right to Wear his lord's coat of arms. Cloaked in these arms , he entered battle with strength and loyalty. This strength preserved him in battle. His loy- alty persisted unto death. A similar challenge has been given the Jtmior Division. After five semesters of work to prove themselves to Riordan, they have received their class rings. No matter where they go, what tri- umphs or tragedies face them , they will forever be tied to Rior- dan by this ring. underclassmen BROTHER GEORGE DIESTEL, S. M. It aims to develop a sense of personal responsibility to God and neighbor, an intense apostolic consciousness, a deep loyalty to parish life, and individual participation in the mission of our Blessed Mother to give Christ to the world. To promote this feeling through- out the school and in the city, the sodality held numerous committee meetings in Which projects were sug- gested to deal with the student and the World. Among the outstanding projects were the canned food drive, the Christ- mas Toy drive, and the inter-school sodality meeting. The greatest victories of any competitive organization at Riordan this year have been Won by the Speech Club. Starting with early season Wins, the Crusader speakers kept up this trend through most of subsequent contests. With this impetus of early and middle season Wins behind them, they prepared for the biggest tournament of the year -- National Qualifications, held this year at San Francisco State College. No Riordan student had ever qualified for national finals before, but this year the tradition was broken. Mike Carroll, senior, and Ed Imwinkelried, junior, swept through eight rounds of debate to Win the right to re- present the Northern California District at Montana Cater this year. But the Riordan Speech Club did not only win in debate. In the other events, Riordan speakers came on to win places at State Finals in Santa Barbara. Dennis Badagliacco, Mike Carroll, Ed Imwinkelried, Mike Ahrens, and Bud Carpeneti all qualified for the April trip to Santa Barbara. This year's Speech Club had only one honor to gain to prove its superiority over its Northern California rivals, schools such as St. Ignatius, Bellarmine and Lowell - the l96l-62 season trophy for accumulated degrees of honor added during the year. That three foot trophy now rests in the Crusader trophy case. Freshmen Speech Members. Front row: T. Mahoney, M. McKay, M. McLough- lin, E. Martinez, R. Bianco. Back row: Mr. Licciardello, P. Determination Although displaying a great spirit of determination and courage, the Riordan Varsity Football Team did not have the success enjoyed by pre- ious teams. joe Sobeck, all-CAL halfback, led the team in rushing, passing, and scoring. Kip Gargano, all-CAL defensive back, headed the tough de- fensive unit. Tackle Kevin Walsh and Center Karl Aichenger, both all- CAL honorable mention, spearheaded the offensive line. Curtis Green also all-CAL honorable mention, provided the longest scoring play of the year--a 97 yard pass-run. Head Cheerleader Gene Muscat was instrumental in providing this year's team with support hardly equaled in the school's history. But plagued by injuries, the team took fifth place in the C.A.L. meet in Stanford. The outstanding performance this year came from the Frosh-Soph team which Won the C.A.L. championship. Many of the team members ran for the varsity in the dual meets and gained valuable experience in doing so. This was the fourth cross-country championship for Riordan. However, Mr. Finnigan, this year's coach, points out that there have been some improvements over last year's performances. Ken Byrne, last year's most valuable swimmer, is gaining strength daily. Mike Dower, a mediocre swimmer in the past, has astounded everyone with his recent per- formances. Vince Palminini and Ed Hornung have equaled their past great deeds. Perhaps the brightest ray of light is freshman Bob Waggner. Swimming a race reserved for older and stronger splashes, Bob has broken the 200 yard freestyle twice. This is indeed a truly outstanding performance for one so inexperienced. All of the practice meets and grueling workouts are leading up to the big meet of the year -- the C.A. L.
