Sept. 20 RIORDAN 6-FRANKLIN 6 A 33-yard pass from Bob Connelly to Tim Moffett with only seconds remaining set up Riordan's only touchdown of the game and their first of the season. Two plays later, Moffett plunged into the end zone for the touchdown. Ray Calderaro's conversion was good, but Riordan was penalized for having T2 men on the field. Thus, the Crusaders had to settle for a tie in their first encounter of the '57 season .... Sept. 28 RIORDAN O-ALBANY 32 This was the only varsity game of the year to be played on Riordan's own field. Due to a heavy rainstorm, Kezar was not playable and Riordan turned out the worse, as far as the Crusaders are concerned, as they suffered a humiliating 32-O loss to the Albany team that went on to an undefeated season. The only bright spot during this after- noon was the appearance of the sun in the late afternoon after two days of constant rains .... Oct. 4 RIORDAN 33-SANTA CRUZ 45 This was Riordan's first away game of the year, and the Crusaders were met with the task of trying to upset one of the top-ranked teams in Northern California in the pre-sea- son ratings. The Crusaders put up a gallant front in a hard fought effort to stop the hard- charging back of Larry Seimering. This game marked the advent of Bob Connelly as first string quarterback, and he celebrated the oc- casion by completing 3 touchdown passes, two of which were screen passes to Tim Mof- fett, for 67 and 85 yards respectively. Oct. ll RIORDAN 21-MCCLYMONDS 7 The Crusaders moved back to Kezar again, and celebrated the move with a rousing 2l-7 victory over a game McClymonds High of Oak- land. This game, considered by many to be Riordan's finest effort of the season, be- longed to the Crusaders all the way, as they jumped into an early lead which was en- dangered only once, in the middle of the third quarter. Again Tim Moffett rambles through the opposition. Oct. i8 RIORDAN l6-SERRA l2 This game was Riordan's annual homecoming game, and the Crusaders had never won a home- coming game, but this one was to be different. Barry Sullivan got the warriors from Riordan off on the right foot, when he blocked a kick which the Serra kicker was forced to fall on in the end zone for a safety. Bob Connelly was sick and unable to play, but Bill Baker took over and got the iob done in typical Riordan fashion .... Oct. 25 RIORDAN 2l-BELLARMINE 52 We really got off on the wrong foot in this one, as the Bells' All-American fullback Jim Jo- sephson ran the opening kickoff for a 94-yard TD. Later Josephson ran another one for 94 yds. The Crusaders were unable to overcome Baller- mine's powerful crew .... Nov. 8 RIORDAN 33-JEFFERSON 7 Riordan traveled to Daly City to face the great Paul Tapia, who had completed more passes than any other ball player in Northern California. We intercepted 7 of Tapia's passes and blocked two Jeff punts, pulling off the 3rd victory of the season .... Nov. l5 RIORDAN 7-BELLARMINE 25 Although we outgained the Bells statistically, we were unable to counteract the long gains of Sam Spooner and Jim Josephson. We gave them their toughest game, and could have won it with a few breaks. Nov. 22 RIORDAN O-SERRA I2 This last game of the season could even up the record, but Riordan was unable to get started and suffered the 5th loss of the season. Serra scored early in the first quarter and late in the game, but the Crusaders were unable to get on the score board. Crusaders and Padres watch with in- terest at the pre-game toss of the coin. Homecoming Queen, her majesty, Carol Gemmet For the third successive year, Immacu- late Conception Academy was the win- ner in our Football Homecoming Queen Contest. Carol Gemmet, student body president of l.C.A., was this year's winner. We like to think that it was because of Carol and her gracious court that our football team was triumphant over Serra in our annual homecoming game. ' ' cmd 78044 KNEELING, Left to Righl: R. FRONT ROW: Ronald Macaluso, Albert Martin, Garry Stagnaro, Daniel Clifford, George Mellinger, William Whalen, Daniel Brogan. Basketball enioyed its finest season in the history of Riordan this year. The varsity with a 22-9 record had the most wins ever gained by a Riordan five. Their 12-4 record gave them third place in the C.A.L. If it were not for two upsets at the hands of Marin Catholic the club would have surely finished first. This was a hustling group that never knew the word quit. Captain Ronald McGee who was one of the better players in the area, received many individual awards including All City, All C.A.L. and All Catholic and All Metropolitan. Highlights of the season were 7 victories over AAA teams and two smashing triumphs over league champion St. Mary's. Such a season was most gratifying to Coach Albert Lavin in his first year as head coach. This is a team that the students and all concerned can be proud. It worked hard and produced the best basketball Riordan has ever seen. This team had laid the foundation for future basketball teams at Riordan. However, the Crusaders are defending champions and have the desire to bring the sixth straight championship back for another year. Coach Fennelly's squad is led by Mike Mullany and Den Leahy. They are the most consistent point getters on the team. Den has not been beaten in the shot put yet while Mike has been beaten but once in the mile. The sprinters are led by Bob Fennell, Ron Macaluso, and Gary Thiebaut. Top 440 men are Tim Applebee and Richard Thelen, John Kenny, Tom Pear- son, Rich Thall, and Wally Coughlin are the top middle distance men. The hurdlers are led by Tom Burns, Richard Dixon, and Rich Kennealy. Tim Moffett is the top broad Iumper with Bob Spalasso at a close second. Rich- ard Kennealy and Jerry Marron led the Crusaders in the pole vault. John Galten has been the most consistent high iumper. Under the guidance of coach Al Sanelli, the '58 Varsity Base- ball team has compiled one of the best records in the Bay Area. After an unsuccessful '57 campaign, the Crusaders weren't given much of a chance for the present season. The Crusaders have sur- prised everyone, and at the present time they are sporting a 16-3 record. They are currently leading their division of the C.A.L., and are in a good position to grab the league crown. Riordan's leading hitter is Junior Ed Preston, who has hit well over .500 for the entire season. Their best all-around ballplayer is Senior Ed Coleman who is their leading pitcher in victories lo-ll, and team's utility player, having pitched, caught, and played two positions in the infield during the season. Riordan's outstanding pitchers percentage wise are Sophomore Mike Moran who has compiled a 5-O record and Junior Dave Shrieve 3-O. This Crusader team is made up of nine seniors, eight iuniors, and two Sophomores. STARTING NINE: J. Woodcock, E. Preston, T. Quinlan, L. Kane, A. Crudo, A. Marlin, T. Dekker, J.
