Brown We, the staff of the 1955 Lance, dedicate this Riordan annual to Father James N. Brown. The Lance staff the Riordan faculty, and the student body ask God to bless him and his office asSuperintendent of Catholic Schools. 3 Nr Q s .X or Q 4 1 A CREED FOR RIORDAN MEN We are proud to be men or Riordan, to be taught by the Brothers of Mary, and to see ourselves being molded into Christian gentlemen. We will to foster the Glory of God, to observe the moral and divine law to the best of our ability, to respect and obey all lawful superiors, and to work forthe betterment of the world, without religious or racial preiudice. In our four years of High School we will endeavor to be a model student in studies, in sports, and in activities . We pledge ourselves to make the people of San Francisco proud of the name, RlORDAN HIGH SCHOOL . SCHOOL TEAM SCHOOL COLORS Crusaders Purple and Gold SCHOOL SONG Fight for the purple, Fight for the gold, Fight on crusaders loyal and bold, Give them a battle, Give them a run, Let's go Riordan give them the gun. Make sure that San Francisco shall see, Old Riordan High School has pep and esprit, All loyal rooters shout it with glee, On to victory. Fight for the purple, Fight for the gold, Fight on crusaders loyal and bold, Give them a battle, Give them a run, Let's go Riordan give them the gun. SCHOOL HYMN Sing from the top of the mountain of Riordan's hallowed name . Ring through the soft green valley Our Alma Mater's fame. Our purple is our loyalty, Our gold is tried and true. All hail to Riordan High School Hail, Alma Mater, Hail, Alma Mate Hail, All hail to youl Now comes the day of our parting, We've waited long to see, While in our hearts there's sorrow, It means farewell to thee. Our purple is our loyalty, Our gold is tried and true. Farewell to Riordan High School Hail, Alma Mater, Our Alma Mater, Hail and farewell to youl 'M'-o..,,,,,, K V. CHAPLAIN Religion English Sodality Coordinator Don Bosco Club Senior Moderator To the Class of l955: The distribution of the Lance is one of the many reminders that the end of your high school career is close at hand. But it is a very special reminder, for The Lance is your book of mem- ories, recalling the four years that you have spent at Riordan, while recording in a special way the achievements of the school - scholastic, ath- letic, social and spiritual - under your leadership during l954-l955. Looking back, the l955 Lance will recall your successes and failures as Riordan students. lt should likewise remind you that you have every right to face the future with a firm confidence in your God, in your Heavenly Mother, Mary, and in yourself. The blessing of God and of Mary has been with you in the past. They will con- tinue to bless you as long as you remain faithful to them in the full practice of your religion through active participation in the Sacraments and in your parish life. As for your personal for- mation, your religious, scholastic, social and L gpthletic training has been such as to enable you to'enter the next stage of your development with the tools needed to succeed. As you leave Riordan you go with the heart- iest best wishes of the faculty for a happy and holy life. We have tried to teach you thatl ife will be happy to the extentin which it is holy. Our Junior Varsity showed lots of fight and a never-say-die attitude even when behind. They had good depth and were a well balanced squad, which is essential to a good team. The offense showed great power and usually was able to sustain a drive. Only the scoring punch was lacking. Many varsity prospects showed their ability this year under Mr. Clark. Coaches Jack Buckley and Stan Springer molded these boys into football players who will someday hold the gloryof Riordan on their shoulders. Although the win, loss column showed the Crusaders on the short end, the team displayed unending fight and deter- mination. The big win of the season was the 20-0 slaughter of Serra . Wi th this year 's co-captains, Buddy Bidleman and Charles Becker, leading the team, our future looks bright. V' Coach Ed Fennelly LEAGUE STANDINGS W L St. Mary's l 2 0 St . Joseph 's l0 2 O 'Dowd 8 4 Riordan 6 6 Serra 4 8 Marin Catholic 2 I0 St. Elizabeth's O I2 lilll l'l'Y Czlllllll Although this year'swin-loss record of l0 wins, I6 losses is not em- pressive, it does not tell the true story of thisyear's fighting Crusaders. In no less than seven games this season Riordan lost by six points or less, and in others Riordan outscored its opponent in number of field goaIs,only to lose on the free throw line. These last facts characterize the spirit of this team . lt was on agg- ressive outfit that never knew when or how to quit. lt was only out- classed on rare evenings, such as against Bellormine and St. Ignatius. Every opponent realized that it had to go all out to beat the Crusaders. This season might be summed up in the following quote from athletic director, Bro. Robert Maguire, No team could ever let up against Riordan, for, regardless of the score, Riordan was always in the game. Besides the C.A.L. schedule of twelve games, Riordan engaged in fourteen practice games and the C.A. L. Carnival. Highlights of the season included hectic one-point defeats at the hands of Lincoln and Sacred Heart. A third place in the C.A.L. Cor- nival provided an evening of thrills which saw the Crusaders' only loss come at the hands of champion St. Mary's. ln the league there were rousing wins over Serra, Marin Catholic, and St. Elizabeth's, but the most remembered moments will be the first half of the second St. Mary's game, which at one time witnessed Riordan on the front end ofa ten point edge. Riordan can be proud of the 195411955 edition of the Crusaders and its coach Ed Fennelly. The Junior Varsity completed a succ- essful season of I5 wins, 9 losses. The team gathered second place in the C.A. L. Junior Varsity League with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses. Rich Clarke and Mike Carson were favorably honored by being named to the All-league team. Great individual stars as Don Chesarek and Bob Harring- ton seem ready to roll. The foremost problem this year is the lack of depth behind our fine first line forces. In the upcoming relays Riordan will be represented, as in the past, by one of the finest mile relay teams in the state. First places at El Cerrito and Hollister are again this year within the reach of the excellent relay team. With Harrington, Chesarek, O'Leary, Filippello, O'Brien, Griffin, and Kray leading the way, the C.A. L. track and field championship will probably once again make its home at Riordan. Only the future knows whether or not Riordan will retain its coveted C .A. L. Baseball Championship. This appears to be a most arduous task for Coach Visco Grgich and his inexperienced charges. Only two starters remain from last year's champion- ship squad, third-baseman Vern Waligora, and outfielder Vince Quinn. With sucha small nucleus as this,Coach Grgichwill fielda team that real- izes what it is up against, a team that knows it must make up in desire and team play, what it lacks in balance. However, in league games so far, the Crusaders have beaten Favorite Serra 7-5, and St. Elizabeth's ll-8, while losing to Bishop O'Dowd 7-3- With such an encouraging start, the Crusaders may once again bring home to Riordan a C.A.
