Senior Yearbook Class of 1964 Rindge Technical School Cambridge, Massachusetts 22 eT 5 Dedication This, the 75th edition of the Rindge Technical High School Yearbook, we wish to dedicate to the memories of two of the most important men in the area of Senior Class Organization: Mr. William H. Mahoney and Mr. Philip H. Diehl. Although we are deprived of their wisdom and advice in the most important year of our high school career, the memories of their fatherly concern will linger in our minds long after we have left the halls of Rindge behind us. The untiring spirit and matchless personality of Mr. Mahoney will for- ever be remembered by those who knew him best, but all of us truly feel that a measure of “Old R.T.S.” accompanied him to his eternal resting place. For the three years that we knew Mr. Mahoney, he enjoyed, for his unsurpassed contributions to high-school life, more respect and reverence than any other member of the faculty. If there ever was a man who deserved the loyalty and admiration of the students as much as Mr. Mahoney it was Mr. Diehl. Despite the fact that dur- ing his lifetime he did not receive wide acclaim for his golden attitude toward the students, his first love was Rindge and its students. He worked relentlessly to help many weak students strengthen themselves and fearlessly step out into a world of besetting trials. We the members of the Class of 64 cannot let these two men be heroes that were unwept, unhonored or unsung. Our alma mater has lost two irreplaceable individuals with their untimely deaths. For this reason we pay tribute to our beloved friends by making the following pages a memorial to their service. MR. PHILLIP H. DIEHL MR. WILLIAM H. It was with apprehension that we entered and with a fond hope that our four years would pass quickly. Throughout this year we became acquainted and in our first class election Edward Dias was voted president. About the middle of the year; a new administration under Mr. Robert R. Sweeney, former aeronautics teacher, took office. In athletic events, our renowned track team once again won the state championship. Our basketball team ran away with the Suburban League title, but had a bad night and was eliminated, the first game of the Tech Tournament. SOPHOMORE YEAR 1961-1962 We began the sophomore year with an air of assurance. Our councillors again selected Edward Dias as class president, and he did a marvelous job throughout the second year. Sportswise the year was a busy one. In football, the team had a fairly good year, and topped it off by beating the school across the street 30-0. Although our basketball team suffered the loss of its dedicated coach, Mr. Murphy, it won the class “A” title in the Tech Tourney in four hard games. JUNIOR YEAR 1962-63 Many of us thought that this would be the toughest year of high school. A well known track man, Bill House, was elected president. With the coming of October the basketball season began. At first the prospects looked dim, but Coach Culhane whipped up a team that could not be beaten. They won the Suburban League title. Track, which is a year round sport, started in the fall with the cross country team winning the Met League championship. With the winter came indoor track and the B.A.A. title. This team had a record breaking relay team. Jim Griffin and Tim Johnson were sent to the nationals where Tim Johnson set a high school record in the 440 and Jim Griffin placed third in the dash. Although we had one of the best goalies in the G.B.I., Alan Michaels, our team had a poor season. This year both the P.T.A. and the school administration fought a hard battle against the wishes of some of the school committeemen to change Rindge to a trade school, fortunately the P.T.A. won. SENIOR YEAR 1963-64 As we began our final year at Rindge, each student sensed a feeling of disbelief because his years had passed so quickly. The senior class immediately started to roll after electing Paul Gibson as president. Our football team had a very successful season. One of the highlights of the season was a victory over Boston English, which had been undefeated in 19 starts. Two of our boys, Aubrey Flagg and end Lou Herbert, were chosen All-Scholastic. Our strong track team won the division champi onship. The basketball team breezed to the Suburban League championship and gained a berth in the Tech Tourney. 1963 marked the 75th anniversary of Rindge and Walter Brennan, a graduate and now famous actor, came to visit the school. We are now looking forward to our graduation, but still cannot understand how the years have passed so quickly. ——— ———— = We the Class of 1964 of Rindge Technical School, Cambridge, Massachusetts, who as of this date have relinquished all responsibility for our actions, leave to those who must remain here in everlasting torment, our last will and testament in the hope that it will ease their suffering. We leave to: Mr. Sweeney, a personalized bomb detector. Mr. William Kelleher, a set of hand-made deten- tion slips. Mr. John Kelleher, a book entitled, “What to Do Until the Riot Squad Comes.” Mr. Ryan, a dictionary of trite expressions and 0, eam mixed metaphors. Ll —— Mr. Jennings, a book entitled, “How to Express ——— Yourself Clearly.” —= Miss O’Rourke, a boy scout first aid kit. es Mr. Joyce, an autographed picture of Charles de ass Gaulle. ee Mr. Scott, a year’s supply of red pencils for —— correcting papers. aay Mr. Sateriale, a computer capable of handling ninth degree equations with integral coeffi- cients. Mr. Parris, a set of extra lab manuals. ——— _isMr. Culhane, a set of cleats for touch football. at The freshman class, a copy of “How to Succeed in School Without Really Trying.” The sophomore class, the thought of having Mr. William Kelleher as dean. The juniors, an experienced yearbook staff. Having given away all our worldly possessions, we. the senior class, do subscribe our names on this, our last will and testament. The Class of 1964 oN, 60 Epilogue The years of our graduation will be the most important ones of our lives. We must set our goals carefully and then strive to obtain them. In order to make our youthful dreams become reality, we must work. We can say that our quest to fulfill these dreams will be difficult, but not impossible, thanks to our good training at Rindge Tech. Life has shown that maturity and flexibility are the primary elements which will determine our success or failure. Since the world is always changing, we must have the maturity to face it without qualms and the flex- ibility to change with it. If we hesitate or become complacent, our dreams will shatter, and we will be heard vainly echoing regret that we could have done better. Now, as we leave the halls of Rindge, let us remember that life is only a means to an end; that end is God. 6| eh FIRST ROW, (L to R): Asst. Football Under the excellent coaching staff our Rindge Warriors closed out their ’63 season with a 6 win 3 loss record. Much to the surprise of many sports columnists our Fighting Technicians upset many a title seeking squad. Every player showed that he has what it takes. Co-Captains, Ben Brathwaite and Aubrey Flagg, led their team to a position in the top twenty in Massachusetts. Recognition must be given to the departing seniors: Aubrey Flagg, All Scholastic and All American quarterback, Lou Herbert, All Scholastic end, Eddie Harris, a boy with the heart of an All American, James Clark, end, James Squires, center, Stan Greenidge, guard, Darnley Thorne, tackle, Ernie Dobson, halfback and Enricus Everteze, defensive punt specialist. 64 FRONT ROW, (L to R): Thomas Davis, James Brogan, Robert Hawkins, Co-Capt. SECOND ROW, (L to R): Coach William Reagan, Malcom Coley, Larry Bingham, Aaron Brath- waite, Larry LaLamme, Thomas Margetson, Darnley Thorne, Severlin Singleton, Robert Farrell, Carl Griffin, Michael Bianco, John Gallego. Track 1963-64 After having an only mediocre season for cross country, Coach Reagan’s boys of the thinclads started to work out of an excellent indoor season. The indoor track season started in a new home, the Commonwealth Armory, be- cause the old East Newton Street Armory had been condemned a few months before the season started. The tracksters won their first meet to begin the season in the right spirit. They clinched the Metropolitan League title by defeating their most formidable foe, Weymouth, and winning all their dual meets. Despite the dazzling performances in the dual meets, Coach Reagan’s team was not up to its peak in any of the big meets. Along with the absence of a few standouts and some bad luck Rindge lost its class “A” crowns in both the BAA and the state meet. However, the track team is looking forward to a good outdoor season. FRONT ROW, (L to R): Myles McTernan, George Mourgis, Benjamin Brathwaite, Co-Capt. Robert Ward, Co-Capt. Louis Herbert, Thomas Samalis, Coach Edward Culhane, Asst. Coach Richard Calnan. BACK ROW: Cecil Sullivan, Calvin Jenkins, Leroy Waithe, David Greenidge, Wallace Thurston, Paul Frechette, Paul Singleton, Lawrence Waithe, Richard Kanode, James Clark, Edward Harris (Mer.) Basketball 1963-64 This year’s team finished on top of the suburban league, with a record of 17 wins and only one defeat. They will soon defend their Tech Tourney title, which they have held for the past two years. Although they are not favored to repeat as champs, they are a strong contender. The team has three of five returning starters of last year’s team. The two new starters are forward Ben Brathwaite and guard John Semper. These who were starters last year are center and co-captain Lou Herbert, guard and co-captain Bob Ward, and forward Tom Samalis. We wish Coach Culhane and his team good fortune in the upcoming tournament. 65 Hockey — 1963-64 The varsity six of Rindge found themselves in a tough league this year. All season it was a battle for first place with Arlington coming out on top. For the second year in a row the first four teams in the league qualified for the State Hockey Tournament. Although Rindge was experienced, it lacked depth, and finished the season in sixth place. The Rindge pucksters were never really out of any game. Senior captain and goalie, Alan Michaels, defense man and member of the 1963-64 G.B.I. All-Star team, Larry Tosi, Albert Donnely and Steve Donnely all had an excellent season. Ed Wright, an experienced junior, was out most of the season due to an injury. Other players who participated were: juniors: Leo LaBlanc, and Steve Collins; sophomores: Mike Sico, Paul Ciccolo, Morman Leger, Bill Frazier, Dave Rouloue and Tom Jennings; freshmen: Bill Mohoney and Dick Hayes. FRONT ROW: Richard Grant, Robert Maloney, Barry O’Neill, Co-Captain Richard Calabrese, Co- Captain Paul Frechette, Joseph Amato, Joseph Scipiletti, Thomas Valenti. SECOND ROW: Michael Nicoloro Manager, Alan Michaels, Steve Donnelly, John Mulvihill, Ed Harris, Albert Donnelly, Aubrey Flagg, John Fialkowski, Kevin Darcy, Doug Gauthier, Coach Lawrence Gibson. Baseball — 1964 This year’s baseball team is looking forward to a better season than in previous years. In all, we have six returning starters: Bob Maloney at shortstop, Al Michaels in center field, Aubrey Flagg, our most reliable pitcher, Ed Wright, a junior catcher, Co-Captain Paul Frechette in right field, and the other Co-Captain, Dick Calabrese, at first. For the junior varsity we have some players to whom may be given a starting berth: Tom Valenti, Joe Scipiletti, Paul Singleton, John Leucher and Don Greenidge. On paper we feel that we have the makings of a league contender. We certainly hope to do as well as we expect. 67 68 Autographs CHEZ DREYFUS 44 Church St. Cambridge Harvard Square FINE FRENCH AND AMERICAN CUISINE COCKTAIL LOUNGE OPEN DAILY TO MIDNITE BANQUET ROOM NIGHT PARKING FREE Hilton Carte Blanche and American Express Checks Honored Free Night Parking TEL KI 7-431 COMPLIMENTS OF ROOM 201 PAUL BEAUDOIN ALAN GOULD JAMES BROGAN RICHARD GRANT ROBERT BURKE STANLEY GREENIDGE RICHARD CALABRESE EDWIN HUNTLEY JAMES CLARK ROBERT MALONEY FRANCIS DIPACE KENNETH MENZIES PAUL FRECHETTE ALAN MICHAELS JOHN GIBBS DENNIS NEWTON PAUL GIBSON JUAN PURCELL Home Room Teacher WILLIAM JOYCE CAMBRIDGE BOTTLING COMPANY Manufacturers of BERKSHIRE BEVERAGES 4 and 6 Berkshire St. Telephone TRowbridge 6-8374 Cambridge, Mass. 69 CAMBRIDGE FLOWER SHOP and Compliments GREENHOUSES ROTTENBERG PHARMACY 2301 Mass.
