WOOD Headmaster Emeritus Senior Yearbook Class of 1963 us Rindge Technical School Cambridge, Massachusetts MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Retired Headmaster MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools Prologue We, The Members of the Senior Yearbook Committee, have compiled on the following pages the accomplishments of our class which we hope will bring forth to every member of this graduating class many pleasant memories, in the years to come, of their experiences at Rindge. From the day we first entered Rindge we felt proud to be a member of her student body and since then we have tried a nd will try to the best of our ability to uphold the fine standards of this fine school. In the following years as the members of this graduating class become prominent members of our society we hope that they will look back and realize that this was all made possible by the fine education that they received at Rindge. Dedication — Yearbook Every year there arises the perplexity of to whom is the yearbook going to be dedicated. This year we encounter no such problem. The one man who has been our staff through- out our years at Rindge is our Headmaster, Mr. Sweeney. Appointed headmaster in our sophomore year, Mr. Sweeney has labored closely with us to make possible our having a suce- cessful stay at Rindge. Starting on the day that he assumed office, Mr. Sweeney has made vast improvements in the academic and the extra- curricular aspects of our school to insure that we would re- ceive an education which would meet the Rindge standard of being unparalled anywhere. As we graduate we can be confident that Rindge is in the hands of someone who has dedicated his life to the fulfill- ment of the ideals for which Rindge stands. Mr. Sweeney, we, The Class of 1963, wish you the determination and strength to maintain the proud name of the Rindge Technical School. Cttasn ce ee a liad th ns hs tid MR. ROBERT R. SWEENEY Headmaster MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER ssistant Headmaster We. The Class of °63. wish to express our gratitude and affection to a most loyal and dedicated Assistant Headmaster. Mr. William J. Kelleher. He was more than just an advisor to us: he was our counselor when we were faced with problems; he was ou r guiding spirit when times were bad. When at times some of our members chanced to stray from the path traveled by true Rindge students he brought us back abruptly with a sternness and a kindness that are typical of this fine gentleman. Knowing that our last year at Rindge would have been more difficult without Mr. William J. Kelleher, we will always respect him and hold a place in our hearts for him. We wish him a return to robust health so that his counselling will be available to future senior classes. MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster Since 1952 a man dedicated to his position and Rindge has molded the lives and character of Rindge students. This he has done so that they may attain their goals in life. This man is our own Mr. John Kelleher. Without his stern yet fatherly counsel many of us would not be members of The Class of 63. In our important freshman and sophomore years many of us had dif- ficulty bridging the gap between a primary and a secondary education. Mr. Kelleher made the passage just a bit easier by a kind word, a reprimand and punishment when justified. We, The Graduating Class of °63, say a fond “thank you” and a sincere farewell to you, Mr. Kelleher, hoping that Rindge students have the privilege of knowing you for many years to come. 12 MR. We entered with the feeling that the knowl- edge that we were about to receive would have a great bearing on our future. Unforunately, during the first year several outstanding members of the Rindge faculty were forced to retire for various reasons. Rindge’s most devoted headmaster, Francis T. McCabe, retired in November of 1959. Retiring also at this time was Henry C. Lynch, faculty manager and Foreign Lan- guage Department Head. Basketball coach Tom Murphy passed away after a sudden illness. Track coach Tom Duffey left Rindge for a highest post at Holy Cross. Looking on the brighter side of things, the Rindge Alumni Association Banquet that year was honored with the présence of Walter Brennan who is well known for his acting career in motion pictures and television. The freshman class of “63” elected Francis Kelley their president and John Feeney their vice president. In sports the track team won the Class “A” State title. Jim Griffin, an outstanding all ’round ath- lete. became the first freshman under Coach Duffy to travel to New York. In the annual Turkey-Day Classic the turkey was carved up between Rindge and Latin after four periods of hard playing to a 6-6 deadlock. The basketball team journeyed to the Tech Tourney after a good season. SOPHOMORE YEAR 1960-61 To begin the sophomore year, we elected very capable leaders in the presence of Pres. H. Sarantakis, Vice Pres. N. Sabbey, Secretary L. Hector, and Treas. F. Morrison. These boys did a remarkable job as they led us through the year without a flaw. In our athletic events, the track team once again won the state championship with J. Griffin, J. D’Ambrosio, T. Ford, S. Griffin and L. Thorne among those of our class that participated. Our basketball team ran away with the Suburban League title but had tough luck in the Tech Tourney as they were eliminated in their first game. During the middle of the year, Mr. Robert R. Sweeney, who, since 1938 was an Aeronautics teacher at Rindge, was selected as our new headmaster. The only disheartening part of the year was the sudden drop in our honor roll. As the year closes out, we look forward to becoming “upper class- men.” JUNIOR YEAR 1961-62 Our junior year was a busy year for sports. In football the team had a pretty good year and topped it off by beating the school across the street 30-0. In basketball we won the Suburban League title although the team suffered the loss of its dedicated coach, Mr. Murphy. The team went on to win the Class “A” title in the Tech Tournament in four hard fought games. SENIOR YEAR 1962-63 We can all look back on our final year at Rindge with pride. This was a year of victories. Norman Sabbey was elected president with absolutely no opposition. The Football season closed with the team losing only one game and that was to a very strong team. Two weeks after Thanksgiving a dance was held that proved to be a very successful one. It was the first in several years that showed a profit. With the coming of December the basketball season started. At first the prospects looked dim but Coach Culhane whipped up a team that had only two returning starters into a team that won the Suburban League title. Track, which is a year-round sport, started in the fall with the cross country team and it won the Met League championship. With the winter came indoor track and the B.A.A. title and the State Meet. This team had a record breaking relay team and also sent two boys, Jim Griffin and Tim Johnson, to the Nationals who ran the dash and the 440 respectively. Many boys who go out for the cross country and indoor teams also will go out for outdoor in the spring so that this should also be a victorious team. The hockey team had a poor season although the boys played with every ounce of their strength. This year’s Prom will be held at the Longwood Towers as have the last several Proms. As the year draws to a close it is hoped that every member of the class fulfills his ambitions. . Class Will We, the Class of 1963 of Rindge Technical School. Cambridge, Massachusetts, being now free, of unsound mind and body, and knowing that we must be kind to someone once in a while, do, therefore, declare this our last will and testament. To: Mr. Sweeney. we leave the hope of many happy years at Rindge. Mr. William Kelleher, more seats in Room 114. Mr. John Kelleher, we leave even smaller freshmen and sophomores. Mr. Mahoney, a new set of “P. of D.” notes. Mr. Ryan, we leave hope for a “Latin” scholar. Mr. L. Fitzgerald, an air conditioner for his “hot seat.” 1S) Mr. Diehl, we leave “1001” odd pictures for the bulletin board. Mr. Sateriale, we leave an “errorless” answer book. Mr. Wadden, we dedicate a section of Harvard Stadium. Mr. McFadden, we leave ten lessons at Arthur Murray Studio. Mr. Scott, we leave 20 pairs of ripple soled shoes. Mr. Parris, we leave an “up-to-date” periodic table. Mr. Jenkins, we leave the “Nobel Prize.” Mr. Harrington, we leave a maid for his desk. Mr. Joyce, we leave a one-way ticket to France. Mr. Fogg, we leave a new library of stone etchings. Mr. McCann, we leave a 4 speed shift on floor. Miss O’ Rourke, we leave an aspirin to cure all illness. The Freshmen, we leave the hope of some day becoming seniors. The Sophomores, we leave many pleasant memories of room 6919 99 Bil The Juniors, we leave a jar of Ovaltine to keep them active during their senior year. Having given away all our worldly possessions, we the Senior Class, do subscribe our names on this, our Last Will and Testament. THE CLASS OF 1963 6| 62 FIRST ROW, (L. to R.): Lawrence Hector, Paul Singleton, Enrico Evereteze, Edwin Wright, Co-Captain Fred Lewis, Co-Captain James Griffin, Davis Greenidge, Stanley Greenidge, Edward Smith. SECOND ROW, (L to R.): Assistant Coach John Powers, Kenneth Young, Aubrey Flagg, Eddie Harris, Walter Woods, Thomas Foster, Frank Talarico, Benjamin Braithwaite, Richard Holland. THIRD ROW, (L. to R.): Assistant Coach Edward Fratto, John Ward, Thomas Davis. Joseph Schipilliti, George McGinnity, Ernest Dobson, John Grace, John Kippenberger, John Fialkowski Head Coach Thomas Smith. FOURTH ROW, (L. to R.): Student Manager Lawrence Thorne, Duncan Elder, James Clark, Darnley Thorne, William Hewitt, Louis Herbert, James Brown, James Squires, Watler Lalumiere. Football September 6, 1962, the Cambridge Chronicle stated that inexperience was the key factor in Rindge’s forthcoming season. Matching last season’s record was an improbability. Coach “Tom” Smith had faith in his boys, and was hoping for the best. There were only three starters returning to the squad, all seniors. Out of the three, two were co-captains; Jim Griffin and Fred Lewis: the third was Lawrence Hector. Rindge got off to a victorious start. by defeating Worcester North High School 24 to 20. Desire was the key factor in this game, and if not for a brilliant open field tackle, by defensive specialist Duncan Elder, Rindge would have gone down to defeat. The next week Rindge traveled to New Bedford, minus the services of Captain Jim Griffin and Stanley Greenidge. After a valiant battle with our opponents, Rindge was defeated 40 to 14. From then on, the Technicians went on a rampage. Keith Academy of Lowell was Rindge’s first victim in the series. Rindge downed Keith 38 to 8 with brilliant runs by Jim Griffin, and passing by Aubrey Flagg. Rindge’s line was outstanding. Lawrence Central was next to be defeated by the score of 30 to 12. A rugged Stoneham High was the next to taste the bitter feeling of defeat. by the score of 22 to 12. The next week, Rindge traveled to Boston Latin only to depart with a tie, 28 to 28. Ending the season was our next objective. Rindge was to play arch rival Cambridge Latin, on Thanksgiving morn. Jinxed by bad -weather, the game was postponed three times in succession. Finally meeting their rivals, Rindge played a stubborn Cambridge Latin team to an 8 to 0 half time score. Flexing their muscles in the last period, Rindge departed from the gridiron with a 16 to 6 victory under its belt. Departing seniors, Captains Jim Griffin and Fred Lewis: Duncan Elder, Lawrence Hector, John Ward, Richard Holland and Walter Lalumiere wish all future Rindge teams complete success. HOCKEY 1962-63 FRONT ROW (L. to R.): Richard Blouin, Edwin Wright, Alan Michaels, Captain Paul Fournier, Lawrence Newell, Lawrence Tosi. SECOND ROW, (L. to R.): Coach Richard Kelley, Manager David Pinkus, Robert Burke, John Carlin, Michael Sico, Francis Pever, Kenneth Daley. ABSENT: Daniel Collins, David Holway, Albert Donnelly, Albert Berry. Hockey — 1963 The Rindge pucksters found themselves in a tough league this year. All season long it was a close race among five agressive teams for the league championship in which three teams tied for the top and the first four made the State Tourney. The main reason that lead to our downfall was the lack of depth. Out of four letter- men due to return, only one did. So without experience and finesse which is needed in making a good hockey team, Rindge tried desperately to capture a respectable position in the league. Senior Captain, Paul Fournier, junior, Allan Michaels, and sophomore, Edwin Wright all had an outstanding year. Wright was the city’s leading scorer with Fournier close behind and Al Michaels was outstanding in the goal and was picked for the All Star Team—a remarkable achievement. Other players who helped the cause were seniors—Larry Newell, John Carlin, Richard Blouin, juniors: Larry Tosi, Al Donnelly, Bob Burke, Al Berry and sopho- mores: Dan Collins, Ken Poley and David Holway. Freshman—Mike Sico, is a comer. Although we, did not post an impressive record, we look for a strong team next year and for many years to come. 63 FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): Coach Edward Culhane, Captain William Hewitt, Thomas Dempsey, Louis Herbert, Robert Ward, Thomas Samalis, Manager Myles McTernan. SECOND ROW, (L. to R.): Manager Edward Harris, Aubrey Flagg, Paul Singleton, John Semper, Walter Thurston, Benjamin Brathwaite, Warren Dottin. Basketball — 1962-63 The basketball team this year proved to be just as good if not better than last year’s team. Their record was the same as last year’s record of 17 wins and 1 defeat. They lost to Brookline, a team that improved throughout the season. | Rindge added many new players this year that were very good even though it was the first time they played ball for Rindge. Hewitt returned and took over the part Stead played last year. He was the second highest scorer in the league. A new addition was Herbert, an excellent ball handler and rebounder. There were Ward and Semper, two new and very good guards. Samalis was a very good forward. Rindge had no trouble in winning the Suburban League title and defeated Brockton twice. Rindge was immediately placed in the Tech Tourney. Our stalwarts swept through the Tech Tourney as follows: Rindge 67 Gloucester 60 Rindge 52 New Bedford 50 (too close for comfort) We weren’t clicking on this one and experienced only a fair night defeating Malden to enter the finals. But in this game we were really hot defeating Durfee by a score of 79 to 68. This automatically qualified us for the New England Tourney. In the first game we disposed of Spaulding High of Barre, Vt., to the tune of 82 to 66. They tried to run with us to their sorrow. In the semi-final round of the tournament Stearns High of Millinocket, Maine, put on a late semi-squeeze and squeaked by us 62 to 58. 64 FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): Coach William Reagan, William House, Paul Gibson, Norman Sabbey, Frank Czarnowski, Timothy Johnson, James Griffin, William Cameron, Stephen Griffin, Duncan Elder, Lawrence Thorne. SECOND ROW, (L. to R.): Aaron Brathwaite, Louis Paul, Thomas Margetson, Edward Watson, Warren Washington, Eugene Levarity, Carl Griffin, James Brogan, Enricus Evereteze, Fredrick Berry, Ken Moore, Thomas Davis, Lewis Herbert. THIRD ROW, (L. to R.): Richard Looney Manager, Phil Jackman, Alexander Pickett, John Sullivan, John Jenkins, Ken Young, Fred Lewis, Aurelio Torres, Ernest Wantman, Dennis Newton, Anthony Sarantakis, Manager. Track — 1962-63 After winning the Cross Country League championship, Coach Reagan’s boys set the track world afire with their dazzling performances on the boards. Starting off by winning all six consecutive dual meets to capture the Metropolitan League title, the track team raced away the State Class A title and the BAA title. In the State Meet, Tim Johnson broke his own record to win the 300. Bill House took third and Bill Cameron fourth in the 600; Stephen Griffin fifth in the Mile, and Jim Griffin third in the Dash. The relay team of Bill Cameron, Bill House, Jim Griffin, and Tim Johnson shocked the spectators by dropping the baton; but after making up the 50 yard deficit, they went on to win by 20 yards. A most unbelievable event. Because of new regulations, the relay team was not able to compete in the Nationals in, New York, but Tim Johnson won the 440, breaking a twenty-four year record and running the fastest race in school boy history. Jim Griffin placed fifth in the 60 yard dash. Seniors who have contributed to this unconquerable team are: Jim Griffin, Stephen Griffin, Tim Johnson, Norman Sabbey, Bill Cameron, Laurie Thorne, Frank Czarnowski, Duncan Elder. Fred Lewis, Louis Herbert, Richard Looney, and Anthony Sarantakis. Because of their shining performance, the Rindge Relay has been invited to compete in the Penn Relays. 65 6 Baseball — 1963 Looking forward to the 1963 season as we go to press we can only predict that the outlook seems exceedingly bright. Interviewing Coach Gibson we find the makings of a fine team. With only a few veteran seniors, Coach Gibson feels that he has his work cut out for him with juniors and sophomores. The returning seniors are: Captain, Paul Fournier, a standout at second base; John Carlin, a sturdy third baseman and George Crossman, a classy centerfielder, who was sidelined with a leg injury the whole of last season. Other returning starters are Aubrey Flagg, a stylish veteran pitcher who can easily go nine and Dick Calabrese, our towering first basenian. Up from the J.V.’s we find solid potential from seniors: Robert Williams, Billy Goode, Walter Lalumiere, and juniors: Alan Michaels, Paul Frechette, Robert Maloney, Douglas Gauthier, George-McGinnity and some fine prospects from the freshman team. | ro 1 it | os Nati nor Socie ational Ho Society FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): Mr. William H. When we are far beyond the crossroads. at which we now stand, we will be able to look back in this yearbook and recall with pleasure the four best years of our life. It is for that reason that the Senior Yearbook Committee h as worked so hard to make this yearbook better than that of any previous Rindge Senior Class. 67 68 Autographs Sponsored by HARVARD TRUST COMPANY Cambridge, Mass.
