WOOD Headmaster Emeritus SENIOR YEARBOOK CLASS OF 1962 Rindge Technical School Cambridge, Massachusetts Dedication “The trumpet’s silver voice is stilled, The warder silent on the hill.” HENRY CARTY LYNCH, IN RETROSPECT Henry Carty Lynch, great humorist, master teacher, kind and wise moralist, has gone to his reward. And never more shall we at Rindge bask in his ready smile and be regaled by his inimitable anecdotes which already have be- come part of the Rindge legend. Henry always loved the limelight of life’s stage and no man loved more the sunshine of full recognition. Of subtle intelligence and open nature, of deep erudition and vast conversational powers, he brought rich gifts indeed to his teaching. Certain it is that thousands of Rindge students will always recall with affection and gratitude the clarity and orderliness of his mind which brightened by bland humor and tingling wit made learning his subject a rich and mem- orable experience. Henry's social sympathies were no less strong than his fondness for learning and he was the most fascinating of comrades. His extraordinary knowledge, whether of literature, law, or athletics and his gleaming wit and glittering repartee in which his knowledge was fused overflowed all his conversation, completely captivating us all. Even at the most serious and even critical moments when he was so ill, if there was a gleam of humor anywhere he saw it and used it to help himself over the rough places and in the dark hours. He loved fun, loved to joke and chaff, and, what is more uncommon, greatly enjoyed being chaffed himself. The senior class deems it an honor to dedicate our year- book to this beloved gentleman. MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Retired Headmaster MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools Prologue The young men who have worked hard for four years at Rindge to graduate, make up the senior yearbok committee. This group has made a complete and accurate account of the constant quest for knowledge of a group of fine young men who will be the adult leaders of tomorrow, they who have accomplished un- forgettable deeds, and there are still others who have done some- thing of some kind or another to show their high character. When we figst entered Rindge we were proud to be a part of her student body. We tried our best and hoped we would not dis- grace the honor of Rindge. This book contains the lives of the men of the future and their accomplishments in the past. As you start to turn these pages in the years to come may you always have a warm spot in your heart for Rindge. EDWARD J. SWEENEY Headmaster We have often heard the quotation: ‘'To. get a job done, give it to a man who is already busy.” As headmaster, Mr. Sweeney has been a truly busy man: yet, never too busy to aid us both as a class and as individuals. Mr. Sweeney became headmaster in our junior year, and in the short time between his assumption of that office and our graduation, he has made many improvements in both the scholastic and social aspects of our high school lives. We, the class of 1962, wish you, Mr. Sweeney, all the health and good fortune pos- sible’in the many years ahead of you as headmaster of our beloved Rindge. We know that the strides you have taken in your short term as headmaster are but a token of the suc- cesses which await you. MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster Upon entering Rindge four years ago, we were told by upperclassmen that under no circumstances or conditions should we arouse the wrath of a man, who to outward appearances, seemed pleasant and harmless. We soon realized the wisdom of the advice we had received. This man became our friend and our counsellor. Fair, just and friendly, but firm and unswerving when the rules or regulations of the school were broken. As we glance back over our four years we can fully appreciate the value of Mr. W. Kelleher to our alma mater. When Mr. Francis T. McCabe, our headmaster retired, Mr. Kelleher took over and operated the school in an efficient manner. Yet throughout the time he was acting headmaster he had time to advise and be our counsellor. Mr. William Kelleher we will never forget you. Your fatherly attitude both disciplinary and advisory, has served to make us, we hope, a class of boys soon to become men, that Rindge will be proud to call her own. MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster As we review the prologues of preceeding yearbooks, the name of John Kelleher does not go back too far, but to read forward beginning with the year 1953, you will see that this man has become a vital part of each graduating class. To this year’s class, Mr. John Kelleher gave excellent guidance and encouragement for a secure future. We, the students of the graduating class of 1962, take this opportunity to thank Mr. John Kelleher for his assist- ance in our achieving our goal. As our freshman and sophomore dean, he was a friend to those who could not adjust themselves to high school life. When we were juniors and seniors, we could always ex pect to hear words of inspira- tion and encouragement from him to achieve greater heights. With all sincerity we feel that Mr. John Kelleher cannot be thanked sufficiently for his many kindnesses to our class. MR. HENRY O. DELANEY Guidance Director MR. CASSIDY In Memoriam Our friend, Peter Cassidy, was an humble man and never a pretentious person. He much preferred to leave life’s limelight to lesser men while he addressed himself to the job at hand, diligently, scrupulously, and with great competence. A devoutly religious man, of great gifts, tremendous loyalty, indomitable will, strong character, inflexible principles and lofty ideals, he loomed a colossus among us. Peter had a sturdiness, a stoutness of heart, a robustness of soul and an uncon- querable spirit that saw him through bleak moments and dark hours up until the very end. Character has now become a much-abused word, often wrongly applied and so little heeded by cynical and worldly persons that as a quality it does not now command the attention and respect that it should. But if one word, one quality alone can adequately describe Peter Cassidy, it is character; for his life and works, his whole being, were triumphs of character, of greatness of mind and spirit. Beside him we were puny. We lacked his magnificence and extraordinary selflessness. He was a dedicated teacher of rare talents, not only in his classroom, shop and laboratory, but wherever learning could take place. He had sagacity and was wondrously wise. Strive as he might to conceal it behind his gruff exterior, he was all kindness and compassion. He hated injustice and abominated bias and prejudice. Ordinarily a man of quiet dignity and deep reserve, his would be the first voice raised to inveigh against any activity or proposition that appeared to him to be inherently evil or morally indefensible. He was a very parfit, gentle knight. Peter was more than a teacher of vocational subjects, more than a portraitist, more than a member of the Rindge faculty. His fine contributions cannot be assessed that easily and neatly, for much of the good that he accomplished, most of the assistance that he rendered to his fellow men, and most of the responsibilities that he assumed are known only to the Lord, whose willing servant he always was. Peter Cassidy passed this way only once yet his valiant spirit will be with us forever more. ew coal Yearbook Staff FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): George Giosmas, Bernard Hynes, Robert Chebator, Clayton Singleton, Michael Jarvis, Robert Fournier, George Carter, Stephen Mascoll, Thomas Milton, Mr. William H. Mr. Sweeney we leave many more years at Rindge as her headmaster. Mr. Burke we leave the hopes for a healthy year. Mr. William Kelleher we leave an empty detention room. Mr. John Kelleher we leave a new crop of freshmen. Mr. Mahoney we leave a new errand boy. Mr. J. Powers we leave a new thermos bottle. Mr. Diehl we leave an autographed picture of the Key Club. Mr. Healey we leave a quiet homeroom. Mr. Jennings we leave all the free electrons he can find. Mr. Parris we leave a completely equipped lab. Mr. Sateriale we leave a slide rule accurate to 12 places. Mr. Travers we leave a large shovel. Mr. Delaney we leave our gratitude. The Sophomores we leave Mr. William Kelleher. The Freshmen we leave Mr. John Kelleher. The Juniors we leave the Sophomores and Freshmen. The teachers at Rindge “we leave!” Now having disposed of all our worldly goods, we, the Senior Class, do subscribe our names on this, our last Will and Testament. THE-CLASS OF 1962. 72 Class History At last the long anticipated day on which we were to enter high school had finally come. To the majority of us the first days were difficult; however, we adjusted ourselves quickly to this new way of life. Although the subjects and discipline seemed difficult in the beginning, soon everything found its place. During the course of the year the Student Council was elected with Richard Pacheco elected as president. William Mangan proved to be the top student and also a fine football player. Other talented athletes were Bob Chebator, George Hewitt, Dennis Dottin and Larry Stead. Our track team that year won the Class A Title and the football team beat Latin 6 to 0. Finally summer came and most of us began to feel more at ease. On September 9, 1959 we once more assembled at Rindge; but now it was our turn to look down at the freshmen who occupied the position that we had held just one year ago. We walked through the corridors with confidence for as sophomores we were now considered to be human beings. This year we got down to business more rapidly. We elected Reuben Dottin, class president. In October we were unhappy to hear of the retirement of Headmaster Francis T. McCabe, a man who had dedicated 35 years to Rindge. Mr. William J. Kelleher, acting headmaster, assumed Mr. McCabe’s duties. We were honored to be visited by Walter Brennan the famous movie and television star who graduated from Rindge in 1915. His visit to the school was inspirational in as much as it showed the success that had been attained by a Rindge graduate. In the annual Thanksgiving Day football game we had to settle for a tie against our next door rivals, Cambridge Latin. The track team enjoyed another very successful season, led by Stephen Mascoll, State “600” champ. In the beginning of 1960 Rindge competed in the New England Relays and won to be- come the “New England Relay Champs.”’ Once again we lost aededicated faculty member as Mr: Henry C. Lynch retired. We not only lost an outstanding teacher but also an efficient faculty manager. Mr. John J. Terry suc- ceeded him as faculty manager. Ours was a very busy junior year. Arthur L. Morash passed away. He will long be remembered for his devotion to Rindge. The famous track coach, Tom Duffy, retired but his shoes were filled well by our own Mr. William Reagan, who guided the Rindge track team to the Class A State Championship. Joseph Patterson won the State Championship in the low hurdles. Basketball coach, Thomas Murphy, also passed away in our junior year, but the basketball team, as a tribute to Mr. Murphy, won the Suburban League Championship with strong support from Larry Stead. The football team beat Cambridge Latin decisively 20 to 0 that Thanksgiving Day. William Mangan was elected president of the junior class. Mr. Robert Sweeney became headmaster. Upon returning for our last year at Rindge, the class officers were elected early so that we could have a good start on the apprdaching busy schedule. Manuel Rogers was elected presi- dent, James Lappas, vice president, George Carter, Secretary, and Harold Hector, Treasurer. In football our outstanding players were Billy Mangan, George Hewitt, Bob Chebator, Harold Hector, and Dennis Dottin. Our basketball team enjoyed another fine season with Capt. Larry Stead, Michael Jarvis, Harold Dupee, George Hewitt and George Anastos playing exceptional ball. Our hockey team had its best year while we were at Rindge with Capt. Bob Chebator, Goalie Steven Michaels, Paul Leman, Walter Englehardt, Billy Gurry, all contributing to a very successful season. As our book goes to press we are looking forward to our Senior Prom to be held May 29th at Longwood Towers. This event, we are sure, will long be remembered as the outstanding social event of our high school career. Graduation will follow and at last we will join the ranks of Rindge alumni. FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): Lawrence Hector, William Squires, James Perri, Harold Hector, Walter Football Faced with one of the hardest schedules in the state, our football team under the fine coaching of Mr. Tom Smith, Mr. Ed Fratto and Mr. John Powers, proceeded to build up an in- experienced team. With only five starters from the 1960 squad, Mr. Smith developed a good representative team. Our first two games were two hard setbacks to Worcester North and New Bedford, but our victory over Watertown, 14 to 6, was the first in three years for the Warriors. With a patched up squad our next opponent was to be Lawrence Central but due to weather condi- tions, the game was canceled. After this disappointing cancellation, Rindge traveled to Kieth Academy in Lowell, Mass. In this game our te am had bad luck. At half time the score was 22 to 0, but that wasn’t all. Dennis Dottin, an all-round player, got both ankles hurt and our star halfback, James Griffin, got his knee very badly banged up. After one of Mr. Smith’s fine locker-room pep talks and the running genius of George Hewitt and the passing of William Mangan, Rindge managed to get 22 points losing by 8 points—30 to 22. The game hurt our team physically, but our subs were showing a lot of progress and played brilliantly. Against Stoneham, the Brownies won 28 to 14. Back at Russellfield, Rindge next took on Boston Tech., which turned out to be a disappointing loss 16 to 14. In the following week, Rindge played host to Methuen, which turned out to be one of the highest scoring games in which Rindge had played in many years. The final score was 48 to 0 with Rindge on top. Practicing for the turkey day classic, the Rindge Warriors knew that even though Latin had a bad season that when they played Rindge they always came alive with a fierce running and blocking attack. Rindge, however, prevailed at the 71st Annual Turkey Day Classic 30 to 0. This marked the third straight shut out over the Cantabs in three years, the scores being: 1959: 0 to 0; 1960: 20 to 0; 1961: 30 to 0. We, the seniors of the 1961 football squad, hope the Rindge Warriors will keep up the good work against the Cantabs in the years to come. Graduating members of the team are: Ends: Harold Dupee, Clayton Singleton, Gene Weeks, Backs: Co-Captain George Hewitt, Co-Captain: Bob Chebator; Allen Dobson, Dennis Dottin, Bill Mangan, Line Men: Lee Thurston, James Perrt, Harold Hector, John Hofferty, Bill Squires, Paul Leman, Thomas Byrne and our unsung hero, manager—George Carter. SECOND ROW, (L. to R.): Gilbert Quinn, Manager; Albert Donnelly, Albert Berry, George McGinnity, Richard Blouin, George Burke, Paul Fournier. (Walter Englehardt was absent). 1962 Hockey This year’s hockey team enjoyed a wonderful season. Although the team was stocked with only a few experienced veterans they did the impossible by upsetting Cambridge Latin for the third time in two years. After that Waltham was downed 3-1 and even aggressive Somerville was beaten 7-4. Although the wins were few we were able to tie four games. The team was never outplayed in any game and they looked good even in defeat. This year’s final record was three wins, four ties, and seven losses. These seniors proved to be valuable assets to the team. Captain Bob Chebator whose hustle kept us in the game. Walter Englehardt who led the team in scoring. Bill Gurry whose play making was essential. Steve Michaels whose goal tending was fabulous and Paul Leman who was always hustling on defence. 74 Basketball — 1961-62 Our 1961-62 basketball team proved to be one of the best in the history of our great school, posting an 18-2 record. For the second consecutive year it was the winner of the Suburban League Title. Coach Edward Culhane, beginning his second year of guiding the basketball team, started the season with only four of last year’s varsity members. The team made up for the lack of experience with good height and speed. We were co-champions in the Suburban League and reached the Tech Tourney. Two of the 18 victories were against our all time basketball rival, Brockton. Brookline proved to be our toughest opponent: they beat us on our home court. We suffered our second loss to Waltham at their home court. Senior Line-Up Closing the season with an 18 to 2 record our “champs” were selected for the Tech Tour- ney. We defeated Beverly 67 to 62, Lawrence Central 66 to 51, Attleboro (a pre-tourney favorite) 68 to 57 and then won the final over our old league opponent, Brockton, 69 to 62. Larry Stead was selected as the outstanding player in the tournament and he and George Hewitt made the All-Tournament All-Star first team. Larry broke the individual scoring re- cord which was 110 points by dropping in 119 points. Winning this tournament we went on to the New England. Facing Bulkeley High of Con- necticut, we were beaten 53 to 31. Our opponents played strictly defensive basketball much to the di spleasure of a huge crowd. The players wish to thank the managers, George Giosmas, John Frank, Robert McCaigue, and John Ippolito for the fine job they did. This season surely made basketball history for Rindge. FRONT ROW, (L. to R.): William Hewitt, Michael Jarvis, George Hewitt, Lawrence Stead, George Anastos, Coach Edward Culhane, John Frank, Manager. Track 1961-62 On December 30, 1961 the track team started their 13th metropolitan track league season. Coach William Reagan chose Joe Patterson and Steve Mascoll as captains and George Bogosian as manager. The team finished second in the Metropolitan League losing one meet to Newton High School. At the conclusion of this meet, the relay team of Gene Weeks, Jim Griffin, Bill Cameron and Steve Mascoll established a new division and league record. Rindge participated in the annual B.A.A. School Boy Track Meet at the Boston Garden. In this meet, Joe Patterson finished a strong second in the hurdles and the relay team of Jim Griffin, Bill Cameron, Steve Mascoll and Ted Johnson took third place. Rindge finished 4th place in the indoor state meet. Seniors leaving this year are: Steve Mascoll, Joe Patterson, Harold Dupee, Teddy Johnson, George Bogosian, Clayton Singleton, George Carter, Gene Wecks, George Hewitt and Joe Sullivan. 76 MR. LAWRENCE GIBSON Baseball Coach Baseball As our book goes to press long before the baseball season is underway, all the staff is able to do is give an approximate forecast of the coming season. Coach Gibson seems to have the nucleus of a strong team. Among the seniors that will form the backbone-of the team are: William Mangan, George Anastos, Walter Doyle, George Elderd, Robert Chebator, Michael Jarvis and Stephen Michaels. Other seniors and juniors, who were members of the junior varsity last year, are certain to give any complacent lad a battle for a berth. Good luck to Coach Gibson and his 1962 squad. ra 78 Epilogue Now that you have rambled through the pages of “The Brownie’’ you may feel a little sad because your school days are past. In the years to come you may again ramble through its pages and a tear will roll down your cheek. Many of your old friends have gone onto higher things or have gone their own ways never to be seen again. The youthful years are past, but we have the knowledge which we received at Rindge and which will be with us always.
