JOHN W. WOOD Headmaster Emeritus SENIOR YEARBOOK CLASS OF 1961 us RINDGE TECHNICAL SCHOOL Cambridge, Massachusetts cs ’ TUL DEDICATION We, The Class of 1961, will always remember and cherish our memories of the past four years; some of them pleasant; some of them sad. Particularly poignant was the great loss we experienced in the untimely death of one of our instructors, whose memory the class wishes to revere at this time. . Those of us who were fortunate enough to have had Mr. Morash as an instructor regarded him as a valued friend; others who knew him as a dedicated and proficient teacher held him in high regard for his great abilities, his superior professional spirit, and the lasting influence he has exerted upon his classes. To the Memo ry Ona MR. ARTHUR F. L. MORASH This Book Is Respectfully Dedicated MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Retired Headmaster MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools PROLOGUE Well, here it is, the Rindge Brownie, with the complete account of the constant strife of a group of fine young men who will be the adults of tomorrow. Some of them have accomplished unforgettable deeds: others have done something of some kind _or another to show their high character They have harvested the tree of knowledge and they will always bear its fruit gratefully. When we first came to Rindge, we saw a beautiful white build- ing and began to feel a stirring in our hearts . . . pride in the thought of being a part of it, even a small part. We would try our best and would hope our best would carry us through. Therefore, we cherish the memories of our four happy years at Rindge and this yearbook will serve to supply a visible bond con- taining, as it does, a record of the accomplishment of our class. But it is not for us, The Senior Yearbook Committee, to judge the deeds of our classmates: instead, we let you read and judge for yourself whether they have kept up with the tradition of Old Rindge. 9: Str? es ; ges eal MR. EDWARD J. DANEHY Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER Acting Headmaster We, the graduating Class of 1961, wish to express our gratitude to Mr. William Kelleher. It is with sadness that we bid farewell to him. In the last four years, the road to learning was not an easy one at times, but his devotion to teach- ing has helped us to see into the complexity of life with a greater clarity than ever before. Without his everlasting guidance, many of us would not be in this graduat- ing class. The only words that can sum up our feelings are: “Thank you, Mr. Kelleher.” MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster We, the Class of 1961, wish to express our sincere gratitude to Mr. John Kelleher, whose outstanding character has directed us on the right path of success. As we glance back over our four years we can fully appreciate the value of Mr. John Kelleher. His advice and counsel helped us to see our goal more clearly and as we chanced to stray from the path of righteousness in school matters, this man brought us back abruptly and decisively. We thank him also for his efforts, patience and time. The impression: “Work is one of our greatest blessings—everyone should have an honest occupation” will remain indelible in our minds forever. MR. A graduate of Rindge Tech in 1918, Coach Murphy received further education at Boston College and Notre Dame University. Upon completion of his studies, Coach Murphy returned to Cambridge, joined the faculty of his alma mater in 1927, and remained there until 1951 when he transferred to Cambridge High and Latin School. Always interested in sports and boys, Tom Murphy became basketball coach upon his return to Rindge in 1927 and has been the only one in that position for 34 years. Noted for his sunny personality, Coach Tom never lost his composure when the going was tough; and when the breaks didn’t come his way he never took it out on the officials or his players. To Tom Murphy it never was “the team” but always “my boys.” Over the span of years that he coached basketball at Rindge, Tom Murphy had many successful teams but he considered the finest of these to be the teams of 1941 and 1942. Both these squads won the Tech tourney with the 1941 team going all the way to the finals in the New England Tourney and losing to Bristol, Conn., by a score of 23 to 16. Both Rindge and Latin have lost a dedicated teacher and a veteran well-loved coach. His friends will miss his genuine all around goodness. May his family receive comfort in the fact of his many accomplishments with youth of this and former years. Now, having disposed of all our worldly goods, we, The Senior Class, do subscribe our name on this, our Last Will and Testament. THE CLASS of 1961 72 CLASS HISTORY When we entered Rindge as freshmen in September of 1957 we were quite excited about the whole thing. Even though we did not know quite what to expect or what to do or where to go we looked forward with all enthusiasm to attending our new school, Rindge Technical School. Our freshman year at Rindge was started with a bang with the dedication of the new War Memorial adjacent to Cambridge High and Latin School. Our freshman council elected Leon N. Braithwaite, class president, who carried on splendid work throughout the year. Our class also lead the school on the honor roll averaging fifty honor students for each quarter of the year. Rindge had a good athletic season for ‘57 and ‘58 in both football and track. The annual turkey day game between CHLS and Rindge ended tied 0 to 0. The track team was outstanding that year with Co-Captains Bob Coffill and John Thomas. Some of its fine victories were, The Metropolitan League Championship, and second place in the B.A.A. Track Meet at which Rindge set two new records and tied one. The Alumni Association, in the spring of 1958, honored Mr. John Wood as the Rindge man of the year. At the close of our freshman year “Mr. Rindge,” him- self, Mr. Charles Linehan retired after 44 years of devoted teaching at Rindge. We started off a very successful sophomore year by electing a good council and they in turn elected: Leon Braithwaite, president, Bernard Simmons, vice presi- dent, Richard Lynch, treasurer; and Marcellas Stamps, secretary. The Cross Country Team won the Metropolitan Championship which was closely followed by a winning football season (6 and 3). The team was greatly helped by John Brooks, Leroy Dottin, Marcellas Stamps and Dick Lynch. Our hockey team was not so successful but Jim Riley and John McGarry greatly helped as sophomores. Paul White in his sophomore year was already being acclaimed one of the best goalies in the state. But our track team, as usual, saved an otherwise dull winter season by. winning the state championship. The team was assisted in this championship by John Brook and LeRoy Dottin, two of Rindge’s best athletes. In the annual Science Fair, second prize was taken by Paul Shea and Emery Springer. Third prize by Joseph Bourne and Bernard Simmons. Our sophomore year honor roll was not as high as it could have been; we were only able to place an average of 26 boys on this list. Robert Calvanio and John Wood battled all year for top honors. Unfortunately, during our junior year several outstanding members of the Rindge faculty were forced to retire for various reasons. Our most devoted head- master, Francis T. McCabe, acting on his doctor's advice, retired in November, 1959. Retiring at this time also was Mr. Henry C. Lynch, faculty manager and foreign language department head. Mr. Lynch was appointed to the Rindge faculty in September, 1920. Looking on the brighter side of things, the Ridge Alumni Association Banquet this year was honored with the presence of Mr. Walter Brennan, who is well known for his acting career in motion pictures and television. Mr. Brennan is a member of the class of 1915 and being a former member of the varsity football squad, made it quite fitting that he present Richard Lynch (voted most valuable player of the year) with the Walter Brennan Award for his outstand- ing achievements in football. Richard is a member of the Class of ‘61. Speaking of football, the annual Rindge-Latin Turkey Day Game, after four periods of hard playing, came to a 6-6 deadlock. Finally, the day has come, the day that The Class of ‘61 is the Senior Class of Rindge Technical School. We have waited for this moment for three years and now that it is here it seems like only yesterday that we were freshmen wandering around the corridors of Rindge, getting nowhere fast. THIRD ROW (L, to R.) Assistant Coach Edward Fratto, John Hofferty, James Perri, Head Coach Thomas E. Smith. FOOTBALL The football team of 1960 was truly an exciting ball club. The season was marked by thrilling games, many of which were won by staging an uphill come- back in the waning minutes of play. Head coach, Tom Smith, summed it up when he stated in the local newspaper that “This bunch has more guts than any kids | have ever seen in a long time.” We also compiled the best record in recent years. A paraphrase of our four years shows that as freshmen we had great potential and proved it by winning all our games. Even as sophomores we placed four starters on varsity. We proved so dominant in our third year that of the starting players, nine were juniors. We even went so far as to place juniors, Dick Lynch and Leroy Dottin, as Co-Captains. The highlight of our junior year came when we upset highly favored Billerica 36-0, much to the delight of our line coach, Jack O’Brien, a former coach of that school. As our senior year finally arrived, Bob Hoog and Marcellus Stamps were elected Co-Captains, and we looked forward to a banner season. We lost Dick Lynch because of ineligibility before the season started, but we still remained a well-rounded team. Before long, our fine coaches, Tom Smith, Jack O’Brien, Ed Fratto, and John Powers, fashioned us into a smart working machine. Little did we know that injuries would plague us for the entire season. In losing our first game to Worcester, 28-14, we also lost the service of Co- Captain Stamps, who suffered a leg injury on the opening kick-off and missed the next five games. Our trip to New Bedford the next week proved fruitless as we bowed to them 20-0. We dropped our next home game to powerful Watertown 28-8. We then encountered Lawrence Central the following week and battled them to a 14-14 tie. In doing so, we lost our scrappy right guard, Billy Gale, who suffered a freak injury and broke his leg. A 22-14 victory over Keith Academy gave us the push we needed as we picked up momentum and started to roll. We met Revere in our next home game and beat them 18-12. This dynamic tearn con- sists of eight seniors and four juniors. The seniors are Capt. Gene Ward, Leroy Dottin, Ricardo Sealey and-Walter Burke as regulars, while Emery Springer, Richard Mullins, Don Postell and Jim Zerofski are the nucleus of a fabulous bench. This season’s highlights are as follows: we won our first nine straight. Rindge scored a smashing upset victory over Arlington whom pre-season polls picked for number one in the Suburban League and also won the return match. Rindge out- classes Brookline in overtime period. The score tied 48 to 48, Emery Springer swished a jumpshot which sent the Technicians on to victory 59 to 48. Rindge set a new school and state record of 106 points in a league game over perennial rival, Newton. Rindge has been invited to the Tech Tournament on the basis of their (15-1) record to date. Appearing on the basketball hall of fame are: Gene Ward—5’ 6” 150 |b. guard and captain. An excellent shooter and a great playmaker. Leroy Dottin—5‘ 6” 160 lb. guard was the most aggressive ball player in the league. He always looks for the assist. Lawrence Stead—6’ 4” 185 Ibs. junior center. The high point man in the team and the most agile center in the state. Ricardo Sealey—5’ 7” 155 |b. forward is an excellent spot shooter. He was the second highest scorer on the team. Walter Burke—6’ 1” 170 lb. forward was a model forward. He cannot only shoot but was one of the greatest rebounders in the state. Emery Springer—6’ 3” 170 lb. forward was also capable of playing in the center position. He shoots and rebounds as well as anyone in the league. Richard Mullins—5’ 10” 150 Ib. guard is a great rebounder and shooter but is noted mostly for his superb playmaking. Don Postell—5’ 3” Ib. guard was a great shooter and playmaker. He possessed the best jumpshot on the team which is difficult for even a big man to stop. James Zerofski—6’ 0” 175 |b. forward was a great rebounder. When on the court he was given a lot of respect. In the Tech Tourney we Were defeated by Somerville 71 to 67 in what all basketball fans agree was the most thrilling game seen in the tourney in a good many years. HOCKEY 1960-61 FRONT ROW (L. to R.) The team was well stocked with experienced veterans, but as the season progressed they did not meet with the success that had been expected. Although their wins were few, they were able to upset second place Waltham and our arch rivals, Cambridge Latin. They also showed their ability by fighting aggressive Somerville and Medford each to a tie. The team was never outplayed in any game and they looked good-even in defeat. But as the season came to a close the final record was two wins, two ties and seven losses. Those who proved to be valuable assets to the team were Captain Paul White who always kept Rindge in the game with his fabulous goal tending; Jim Riley who helped the team considerably with his versatility as a forward and defense- man; Jack McGarry, who proved to be very effective with his fore checking; “Gibby” Quinn, whose playmaking was essential, and Tom Nadeau, who was always hustling and played fine hockey throughout the season. We did what everyone said was impossible. In our second game with C.H.L.S. we defeated them 1-0 due to the superb goal tending of Captain Paul White. 75 76 First Row, L. to R. Rindge has always expected the best from its track team. Discounting the fact that we placed second in the Met. League, and fourth in the B.A.A. Meet, we successfully retained our state meet title. Coach Duffy, retiring at the beginning of the season after a glorious history of track coaching at Rindge, was replaced by Mr. Reagan and he filled Coach Duffy's shoes very well. Seniors who made Rindge Track great during the 1960-61 season and who are leaving with a track record to be proud of are: Captain John Brooks, Leroy Dottin, Marcellas Stamps, Robert Hoog and Bob Kelly. We, in the future, will look back on track as the sport in which Rindge was great and will continue to be great. We wish luck to those who desire to go on in athletics, as many Rindge graduates have, and we are sure that they will bring more fame to Rindge. “Rindge is Track, and Track is Rindge.” Hewitt grabbed after long gain Brook receiving a kick-off Hewitt sweeping left end with Chebator and Hoog leading intereference. According to Coach “Larry” Gibson this is going to be a more successful season than those of the past. Coach Gibson says, “| have returning seven starters from last year’s team along with some promising J.V.’s. At the end of last season my team played very good ball and put us into the win column with three victories.” This year’s seniors who will participate are Captain Paul White and Jim Riley (who have been starters since their sophomore year), John Melia and Charles Donahue, who looked very promising at the close of last year’s season. Other seniors who will be supporting the team are “Gib” Quinn, “Jack” McGarry, Tom Nadeau and “Chuck” Lewis. EPILOGUE It is with deep sorrow that we, the members of the Senior Class of 1961 must leave old Rindge after four years of what seemed to be a most everlasting pleasure. Many names, faces and happenings will have a place in our minds as we read this memorial years from now. The old gang and many others will live with us as we think of the things we used to do. It is with pur- pose that the Senior Yearbook Committee has worked to make this yearbook one of the best that any Rindge Senior Class has ever had. Now we stand upon a threshold of a new adve nture, yet the memories of our beloved school will always remain close to our hearts. 79 80 NATIONAL HONOR, SOCIETY NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY FRONT ROW (L. o R.) L. Morash. Mr. Morash graduated from Rindge, a member of the class of 1914, enlisted in the United States Navy in 1917 and while he was in service he attended the Naval Academy for an advanced course in radio, the completion of which was marked by his promotion to Ensign. After his promotion to Ensign, Mr. Morash resigned from the Navy to attend Harvard University from which he graduated in 1923 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He also did graduate work at Mass. Institute of Technology and later returned to Rindge as a teacher in the electronics course. During World War II he was called back to active service after which he again returned to Rindge and here he stayed for his remaining years. “Rindge subjugates Latin in Turkey Day Game.” The latter is a headline in the December issue of the Rindge Register, under which is written the story of how our “Rindge Warriors” romped to a 20-0 win over our old city rival, Cambridge High and Latin School, in the traditional Thanksgiving Day Football Game. During our four years at Rindge (class of ‘61) our Rindge Warriors have won two of the four annual turkey day games and have tied the other two games played. The Senior Council of the Class of ‘61 met September 30, 1960, to elect senior class officers and the results were as follows: president—Ronald Calvanio, vice president—Robert Hoog, secretary—Richard Clark, treasurer—James R iley. At this time the better half of our senior year has passed by and thus far the class officers listed above have done and are still doing a most commendable job. As we go to press now, the Senior Class, headed by our class president, Richard Calvanio, is planning a dance, the benefits from which shall help to pay the cost of this yearbook. Now this brings us up to the last formal event for The Class of ‘61 before graduation and that is the Prom. Plans for the Prom are just getting under way now and all that is known at this time is that it will be held at the beautiful Long- wood Towers in Boston where it has been held for the past ten years. Being proud members of the Rindge student body and The Class of ‘61 we sincerely hope and do believe that our prom will be one of the best ever held by Rindge, just as The Class of ‘61 has been and is one of the best classes to graduate from Rindge Technical School. FOOTBALL (cont’d) victories as we downed Boston Trade 22-14, and Methuen 28-6. A record breaking crowd of 12,000 people was on hand Thanksgiving morning to watch us defeat arch-rival, Cambridge High and Latin School, 20-0. This victory over Latin School provided a perfect ending as we did not lose one game to them during our entire stay at Rindge. When the annual All-Cambridge Football Team was announced, it was dominated by Rindge Players as seniors, Joe Tyree, John Brooks, Marcellus Stamps, Bob Hoog, Leroy Dottin, Walter Burke, and Jim Zerofski were chosen for the honor. For some it was their second year. This account will be incomplete without mentioning the hard work rendered by faculty manager John Terry, student manager Jim Riley, team physician Robert Driscoll, and our able trainer and everyone’s friend, Bill Linskey, better known as sDoce Sponsored by COSMAS INSURANCE AGENCY—522 Mass.
