WOOD Headmaster Emeritus SENIOR YEARBOOK CLASS OF 1960 RINDGE TECHNICAL SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION The Senior Class of 1960 wishes to dedicate this year- book to a man who has devoted the greater part of his life, in the field of education, to the students at Rindge. Francis T. McCabe has been a true and inspiring friend of the stu- dents. Because he has retired as Headmaster of Rindge, it is proper and fitting that we, The Senior Class, dedicate this yearbook to him. MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Retired Headmaster The members of the Class of 1960 wish to express their profound gratitude to Mr. McCabe for the counsel he has viven them during their years at Rindge. We are better trained to answer our vocation in life with the guidance and under- standing of a man we will never forget. Francis T. McCabe, we were sorry to see you retire but we all wish you many years of happy retirement. MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools PROLOGUE We, the students of Rindge Technical School, would like to present to you a brief account of our days at Rindge. This yearbook will provide you with a future reference of your memorable years in school. To us, the members of the graduating class, this is not only a collection of pictures and facts, but also a memento of our high school days. During our years at Rindge we have all had exciting events that will lie imbedded in our minds and will be recalled by this yearbook. As the years go by we shall find ourselves consulting this book time and time again. It will bring back the many memories, some pleasant, some exciting, some even humorous, but all memorable that we shall relive many times over. Thus we have at our finger tips a source of information about our classmates, our friends, and teachers, that will grow more and more valuable as the years roll on. MR. EDWARD J. DANEHY Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER, Acting Headmaster “Gratitude is the memory of the heart” We, the members of the graduating class of 1960, are proud and grateful to have had the privilege of enjoying your sterling qualities of inspirational leadership. The guid- ance and understanding you extended to us were above and beyond the call. We earnestly hope that we will be able to justify your every trust and confidence in enabling us to arrive at the years of manhood and those beyond as we look forward with courage and fortitude to the future. MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER Assistant Headmaster We, the members of the class of 1960, as we are now leaving Rindge, wish to express our gratitude to Mr. Kelleher for the earnest way in which he has guided us in our stay at Rindge. He has shown the utmost interest in our education. We hope that the future classes of Rindge find him as friendly, wise, and accommodating as did the class of 1960. Thank you, Mr. John Kelleher. MR. To the Juniors we leave the memory of many happy hours spent at Rindge. To Mr. William Kelleher we leave our wishes for many more fruitful years. To Mr. John Kelleher we leave hoping he will continue to do well his tiring and exacting work. To Mr. Delaney we leave our sincere thanks for all he has done for us. To Mr. Mahoney we leave the hope of more co-operating classes. To Mr. Leon Fitzgerald we leave a chess-playing computer. To Mr. Eugene Fitzgerald we leave a complete new stock of books. To Mr. Joyce we leave our fond wishes for continued success. To Mr. Sateriale we leave a dozen imaginary roots for his garden. To Mr. Burke we leave and is he glad? To Mr. Jennings we leave a book entitled “Sixty Ways to Teach Chemis- 9 try. To Mr. Parris we leave a new Physics course. To Mr. McCann we leave a radar-controlled ejection seat. To Mr. O’Connor we leave a brand new 1960 factory-guaranteed “lemon.” To Mr. Ianelli we leave a six million volt battery so he can get a “big charge.” To Mr. Nissen we leave a coal mine. To Mr. Mellen we leave an authenticated sample of austenite. To Mr. Thomas McLaughlin we leave the recording “Japanese Sandman.” To Mr. Ryan we leave our best wishes for renewed health. To Mr. Scott we leave a potted cactus from the Mojave Desert. To Mr. Diehl we leave a victim for his miniature guillotine. To the forge we leave a white-wash job. Now, having disposed of all our worldly goods, we, the Senior Class, do subscribe our name on this, our last will and testament. THE CLASS OF 1960 70 SENIOR CLASS HISTORY The portals of Rindge opened to us in September 1956. We entered with the feeling and knowledge that the next four years would greatly affect the rest of our lives. Shortly after the school year opened, Mr. Joseph F. Freni, our beloved band- master, passed away and left a void for his many friends. This sad news was partly offset by the great news that “Charlie” Jenkins won the 400 meter race in the Olym- pics and was also a member of the winning relay team. As freshmen,we felt we had a prosperous and very educational year. Our sophomore year was highlighted by the dedication of the war memorial adjacent to C.H.L.S.: we elected Robert Patterson our president and the cross country team won the Metropolitan League title with David Blackman as manager. The Alumni Association honored Mr. John Wood as “The Rindge Man of the Year.” The year was closed out with the retirement of “Mr. Rindge” himself—Mr. Charles A. Linehan. Our junior year was blighted by the retirement of “Mr. Rindge Register”— Mr. Walter H. Gomes. Here was a truly dedicated teacher. We re-elected Bob Patterson class president; the cross country team again won the league title and Coach Duffy was honored by the Alumni Association. The track team won the Class “A” State title and we were constantly amazed at John Thomas’ world breaking record feats. After the spring vacation we were sorry to learn that our Headmaster, Mr. McCabe, had suffered a heart attack necessitating his resting for the remainder of the school year. Mr. Vincent Burke was named head of the mathematics department succeeding Mr. Linehan. As our senior year opened, we learned that Mr. McCabe, on the doctor’s advice, was to retire. Mr. William Kelleher was named Acting Headmaster to carry on Mr. McCabe’s duties. The year was saddened with the deaths of Mr. John McLaugh- lin and Mr. Leverett Preble, both splendid teachers. The track team won the Class “A” State title after having been given little or no chance. Another great accomplishment for Coach Duffy. Mr. Henry Lynch retired as Faculty Manager and Mr. John Terry was appointed in his place. Walter Brennan was honored by the Alumni Association along with Mr. Linehan. Mr. McCabe, Mr. Lynch and Mr. Gomes. The hockey team showed great improvement and things look bright for the future. We elected Paul Bertelli president and, as we go to press, plans are underway for our Senior Prom and Graduation. All in all we leave feeling we have received what we had planned on entering. a splendid education under the guidance of a superb corps of teachers. FOOTBALL 1959 The 1959 football season was a disappointing one at Rindge. Rindge’s record was 1-6-1. The first game of the season was with Worcester North. The score was, Worcester North 20, Rindge 12. Junior Leroy Dottin scored the first touchdown and also threw a 58 yard pass to Walter Burke. Rindge’s next game was with New Bedford at home. New Bedford shut out Rindge 30-0. Rindge began a long road trip. Their next game was with Watertown. Rindge gave the strong Watertown team a fight but they were finally defeated 30-8. Rindge’s lone touchdown was scored by Leroy Dottin. Rindge next travelled to Lawrence Central where they were defeated 38-6. Danny Southerland intercepted a pass and ran 68 yards for Rindge’s lone score. Rindge’s next game was at Keith Academy where they were shut out 8-0 in a very close game. Revere was next as Rindge closed out their long road trip. Rindge was defeated 16-0. After the game with Stoughton was cancelled because of bad weather, Rindge met strong Billerica at Russell Field. Rindge walked all over Billerica as they defeated them 36-0. Rindge closed out the season with their annual Thanksgiving game with Cambridge Latin. The game ended in a 6-6 tie. Leroy Dottin scored Rindge’s lone touchdown. (L. to R.) FOURTH ROW: Assistant Coach, Edward Fratto, Robert Shaw, Student Manager John Kostopoulos, Co-Captain Rich-: ard Lynch, Robert Chebator, Clayton Singleton, Daniel Sutherland, Joseph Tyree, Melvin Betts. 71 BASKETBALL 1959-1960 FRONT ROW, left to right: Peter Tsoukelas, Student Manager, Richard Lynch, George Hewitt, Joseph Murphy, Captain, Roy Gaul, Lawrence Stead, Mr. Thomas Murphy, Coach. TOP ROW, left to right: Mr. John Terry, Faculty Manager, Richard Mullins, Gene Ward, Eurie Stamps, Richard Leeman, Mr. Culhane, Assistant Coach. BASKETBALL 1959-1960 This past season could really be called an up and down season. On some occasions our lads looked unbeatable and then on other occasions they would look drab. The highlight of the season was the scoring of 97 points against our old rival C.H.L.S. This point total represented an all time high in Rindge basketball annals. On this particular occasion our boys were really hot. Only on one or two encounters were we really outclassed. Many of the games we lost could have been on the victory side of the ledger wit h just a little more luck or a little more “oomph.” Seniors who performed well for Coach Murphy were “Joe” Murphy, Roy Gaul. Eurie Stamps, Richard Leeman. Many lettermen are returning and with candidates coming up from the Junior Varsity, a successful future looms for Coach Murphy. We seniors wish him “good luck.” HOCKEY 1959-1960 FIRST ROW, left to right: F. Swadel, Manager R. Chebator, R. McCallum, J. McGarry, Co-Captain P. White, J. Riley, Co-Captain R. Sousa, J. Falcone. SECOND ROW: J. Terry, Faculty Manager J. Medeiros, P. Gerard, T. Nadeau, P. Leman, J. Quinn, S. Mikles. THIRD ROW: S. Locke. W. Doyle, L. Newell, L. Thibodeau, P. Weisbach, W. Englehart. HOCKEY 1959-1960 There was no doubt about the fact that our hockey situation is on the way back to a position we commanded in the late 30’s, 40’s and early 50’s. Only once during our fourteen game schedule were we decisively defeated and this was attributable to illness and bad luck. Our one goal losses and the tie games we played could easily have wound up on the good side of the record book. All year long, Paul White proved to be a bulwark and to our way of thinking the best goalie in the league. Seniors who performed with real Rindge spirit were—R. McCallum, R. Sousa, J. Falcone. Most of the squad is returning and with Coach Kelley’s expert coaching the future looks bright. 73 TRACK 1959-1960 FRONT ROW, left to right: J. Mello, J. Benson, S. McLain, C. Cronshaw, V. Povio, Co-Captain C. Robinson, Co-Captain K. Bentubo, A. Sullivan, R. Patterson, S. Mascoll, J. Patterson. SECOND ROW: Coach, Mr. Thomas Duffy, Faculty Manager, Mr. John Terry, H. Dupee, J. Sullivan, A. Deleo, D. Blackman, M. Stamps, A. Saratages, S. Griffen, R. Williams, P. Pitcher. THIRD ROW: J. Burke, T. Johnson, C. Singleton, G. Carter, N. Sabbey, W. Cameron, J. Griffen, D. Elder, E. Bailey, N. Sealey. TRACK 1959-1960 Once again Coach Duffy proved the master coach. Troubled at the start of the season with a “thin” squad he worked tirelessly until on Saturday, February 6, at the Boston Garden he unveiled his state champions. A selected squad has been chosen to appear in “The Nationals” at the Madison Square Garden on February 20. The squad consists of K. Bentubo, J. Benson, A. Sullivan, C. Robinson, S. Mascoll, and J. Brooks. J. Griffin will also go. Seniors on the squad who brought glory to Rindge were J. Benson, S. McClain, C. Cronshaw, K. Bentubo, A. Sullivan, R. Patterson and D. Blackman. 74 =a ar egestas A sturdy line a : 3 2 | q Si! Good luck, good game Enthusiasm on the bench 76 BASEBALL 1960 With the trend toward the upswing in all athletics at Rindge, it is hoped that baseball will be no exception this year. As we go to press long before the baseball season officially opens we can only look into our crystal ball and predicate on the future. Seniors who should play an important part during the coming season are: Harold Turcotte, Captain and starting third baseman, Robert Bouvier, a pitcher up from the J.V.’s, Larry Hilliard, a potentially good ball player, and Peter Tsoukelas, who played both the infield and outfield last year. There are a large number of aspirants and juniors and sophomores, so the pros- pects of a good season are exceedingly bright. EPILOGUE Well, classmates, our task is finished. We hope that your frequent perusal of these pages will bring back fond memories of your days at Rindge. As the years pass by we feel that this volume aided by “Father Time” will enhance the value of our work. As we wend our ways into various fields we know that you will regard the “thumbing” through of these pages as a must. With each passing year we hope you will relive your stay at Rindge and will realize only as we grow more mature what a wonderful, pleasant, and joyful period these four years were. Time should not erase the friendships we have made while at Rindge. Let’s always try to keep in touch with the many friends we made here.
