JOHN W. WOOD HEADMASTER EMERITUS MPS SENIOR YEARBOOK CLASS OF 1959 5H RINDGE TECHNICAL SCHOOL CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS DEDICATION The class of 1959 affectionately dedicates its yearbook to a man who will live forever in the history of Rindge. The editorial, which appeared in the first issue of our last year at Rindge, crystallizes our feel- ings towards him: “As a new school year opened, a definite void seemed to exist. No one at first could seem to explain this emptiness. It took only a few days to realize that a man who had been an integral part of the very foundation of Rindge was no longer with us. Mr. Walter H. Gomes had retired. For thirty-nine years, Mr. Gomes had been the so-called faculty technical advisor of the Rindge Register. This was a misnomer, for Mr. Gomes was actually “The Register,” as those of us who knew him know full well. The Register would never have been produced without his able, expert knowledge, his indefatigable energy and his abiding devotion to the Rindge technical school. It doesn’t seem possible that he is no longer with us. “To stop here and wish Walter many years of health and happiness in his retirement would be a gross injustice. The Rindge Register was just one of his many noteworthy accomplishments although, we suspect, his best. The paper is truly a monument to him. ‘We, at Rindge, need only to pass along our first floor corridor and see in frames a complete athletic history of our school. The countless hours that this dedicated man put into this project probably will never be known. He was too modest a gentleman to think that this time spent was a sacrifice. He was imbued with so much Rindge spirit he probably felt it was his duty as a Rindge man. The research re- quired to bring this most amazing project up to the present day, required a tenacity of purpose that only a man like Walter possessed. We feel certain in saying that no other high school in the country has as complete a visual athletic library under glass as we possess. So Walter leaves yet another monument. “There are those of us who can, with a little retrospection, recall yet another monument that could not be seen with the naked eye. For years when we were producing our annual senior drama, or, as a matter of fact, for any type of entertainment he had in the auditorium, Walter supplied all the lighting equipment, stage accoutrements and a working crew without ever submitting a bill for his services. We suspect, and in fact-we know, that it cost this noble character money out of his own pocket. “Back in 1931, our first yearbook was produced and here again without the guiding hand of Walter this project would not have reached fruition; this yearbook fathered our present book. ‘As we bring this article to a close we know we are going to leave many things unsaid, but the wide range of his services to Rindge were of such magnitude that it would take a much more proficient re- searcher to do this truly wonderful person justice. His place in Rindge history is intact—as long as the name Rindge lives, the name of Walter H. Gomes will be indelibly associated with it.” MR. FRANCIS T. McCABE Headmaster Mr. McCabe has been in the Cambridge school system for the past 37 years. He was appointed a teacher in 1922 and master in 1928. He became assistant headmaster in 1937; acting headmaster in September of 1950 and headmaster in 1951. Mr. McCabe is a graduate of the University of Maine, being awarded his Bachelor of Science degree in 1922. He has also received a master of education degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1928. It has been through Mr. McCabe’s encouragement, understanding, guidance, and friendship that many of our classmates are now graduating. We, the Class of 1959, will never forget him and wish to thank Mr. McCabe for his help. We hope that those coming after us will for many years have the advantages of his friendship. a 8 a i th. Re Aven) 4) Ss US, ies . . a MR. JOHN M. TOBIN Superintendent of Schools PROLOGUE An elderly man in a spacious apartment, thoughtfully makes his way toward a shelf of books. They are his respected friends— friends with whom he may converse at his ease. The index finger of his right hand runs across the line of volumes and comes to a stop upon a beautifully bound, brown book. He takes it from the shelf and regains his comfortable armchair. He opens the cover of his beloved volume. He turns to the title page of this “Brownie” of 1959. It was many years ago, yet as he silently turns the memorable pages and delights in reviewing his never to be forgotten high school days at Rindge, it seems like yesterday. A broad smile spreads across his peaceful face. MR. EDWARD J. DANEHY Assistant Superintendent of Schools MR. WILLIAM J. KELLEHER We of Rindge Technical School are fortunate in having Mr. William Kelleher on the faculty. His -whole- hearted assistance and smiling geniality endears him to all that know him. At first, his manners may seem stern and difficult but his pleasant humor soon wins the hearts of his pupils. His job is difficult and sometimes distasteful but he always comes th rough with 4 smile and a good word for all. Mr. William Kelleher, although you were stern in appearance, your words of wisdom carried us to SUCCESS. MR. JOHN F. J. KELLEHER As the class of 1959 prepares to depart and take its place in the world, we wish to express our deepest gratitude to our beloved assistant headmaster, Mr. Kelleher. During our four years at Rindge, Mr. Kelleher has unselfishly dedicated himself to the further advance- ment of our education. To you, Mr. Kelleher, the class of 1959 extends their heartfelt thanks and wishes to you the greatest of success in the future. MR. WILLIAM H. MAHONEY Faculty Advisor SSS AA, Was MR. HENRY O. To Mr. McCabe we leave our wishes that he will spend many years at Rindge as its wise and affable headmaster. To the both Mr. Kellehers we leave empty detention rooms which we so ably filled. To Mr. Mahoney we leave a complete office staff to take care of his numerous tasks. To Mr. Delaney we leave our gratitude and appreciation for guiding us so suc- cessfully through our senior year. To Mr. Lynch we leave the hope that all future Rindge students will turn in their equipment upon request. To Mr. Sateriale we leave a set of pictures to cover the holes in his wall. To Mr. O'Connell we leave a book entitled “A Rindge Boy’s Outlook on World Affairs.” To Mr. Joyce we leave a new album of French recordings. To all the coaches we leave the job of producing winning teams with scant ma- terial. To Mr. Terry we leave an ultra modern physics lab. To Mr. Morash we leave a warehouse full of electrical components. To Mr. Lynch we leave an automatic answering set for his telephone. To Mr. Jennings we leave a ton of plexiglass. To Mr. McCann we leave a life insurance policy along with a supply of crash helmets. To Mr. Wadden we leave a book entitled “Math Made Easy.” Having now disposed of all our worldly possessions we do hereby subscribe names as representatives of the class of ‘59. THE CLASS OF 1959 CLASS HISTORY We, the class of 1959, feel it only fitting and proper that we make a brief record of the events that have taken place here at Rindge during our four years. We entered in September, 1955, as freshmen. We were new to this building at first, and some of us became lost, but we quickly became accustomed to the daily habits and duties of a Rindge student. As freshmen we elected Alan Jackman as president of our class. Athletically we placed William Mitchell and Albert Beaudoin on our varsity football squad. As summer came upon us we were happy to leave Rindge, but more was our anxiety to return to be sophomores. When we returned to Rindge in the fall we began to look at ourselves to find out who would be our academic students, athletes, and class officers. We were now fami- liar with this great building and we were anxious to make ourselves known and appreciated. For the president of our class we chose Ernest Kapopoulos, who was also a standout for Rindge on the diamond. Alan Jackman and Bruce Grigsby were bringing us mention for their performance in track. With most of us determined to go higher in all respects in our forthcoming junior year, we left Rindge in June of 1957. Upon returning to Rindge in the autumn we realized we had but two years left so we quickly went back to work. Without the juniors who performed for our track team we could not have won the Metropolitan League title. On our Thanksgiving Day game we bounced back from a dismal season to gain a scoreless tie against our rivals, CHLS. Academically we placed three juniors to the National Honor Society, Frank Johnson, Ronald Beaudoin, and Mike Bell. A great year was slowly coming to an end, but as we left in June, we were determined to make our senior year one of the best years in Rindge history. We were destined to have one of the most successful football seasons in Rindge’s long history. From the many capable candidates for the office of president, we chose Frank Johnson. To Mr. W. H. Mahoney, our faculty adviser, we owe a great deal of thanks for his unselfish efforts in making our senior class a success. The players on our foot- ball team played their hearts out at every game and made it a wonderful season. Victories over Revere and Lawrence Central highlighted the six-win three-loss season. These boys brought back to Rindge the spirit for football that was sadly lacking. On Thanksgiving Day we overwhelmed our rivals, Latin, by a 14-6 score. This was the climax of our four years at Rindge. This is one day that we will remember wherever we may go or whatever we will do in the future. The track team, sparked by our talented seniors, went on to an undefeated season and captured the Met League title. We can be proud, also, of the fine performances of our athletes in the other sports. In June, 1959, the doors of Rindge will close behind us for the final time. Some of us will continue our education at college, others will go out into our factories and offices, and still others will become members of our armed forces. May this brief record of our days here at Rindge bring us cherished remembrances of the school days we spent here at Rindge. 69 FOOTBALL TEAM ON FLOOR, left to right: L. Brathwaite, B. Jackson, A. The first game proved unfortunate as they lost to. Wareham 20-6. Co-Captain Buzzy Mitchell scored Rindge’s only touchdown in this game. Things brightened up as they beat New Bedford 26-6. Mitchell and Jackson scored two touch- downs apiece in this game. This was Rindge’s first victory in over two years. Watertown was next for Rindge as the boys started to roll. Paul Girouard, co-captain, scored twice in leading Rindge to a 20-6 win. Lawrence Central proved to be a cousin for Rindge as our boys smothered them 42-0. Everyone got in on the scoring of this game, even Ben McInnis who recovered a Lawrence fumble and raced AO yards for a touchdown. Keith Academy proved to be a tough competitor, but not tough enough for Rindge. Ben Jackson, the senior quarterback, scored two touchdowns in leading Rindge to a 20-14 win. Next came one of the biggest upsets of schoolboy football as Rindge beat Revere, potential class “B’ champions, by a score of 28-0. William “Buzzy” Mithcell had a field day scoring 3 touch- downs against a mighty Revere team. But that was not the whole story. Revere came inside the ten- yard line of Rindge three times, even to the one-foot line, but would not score. The big defensive line including the following seniors held Revere in check: Al Beaudoin, Bennett McInnis, George Greenidge, John “Rocco’” McGurk, and Richard “Tiny” Herman. Stoughton proved to be the stumbling block for our boys as they beat Rindge 26-0. Rindge played a good game but Stoughton was too powerful a team and they outclassed Rindge in every depart- ment. i ie FOOTBALL (cont'd) The following week Rindge and Billerica were involved in a real thriller. Rindge came out on the short end of a 26-20 score. Buzz Mitchell scored two in the losing effort. The Turkey Day Outing also proved to be an exciting game. The winless Cantabs, seemingly a pushover, proved to be a tough customer. Sophomore Leroy Dottin scored 2 touchdowns as Rindge won 14-6. This was the final game for many of the Rindge football players. Coach Tom Smith got all the seniors in the game. Football players graduating are: Co-Captains Mitchell and Girouard, Jackson, Greenidge, Beaudoin, McInnis, Bell, Morin, McGurk, Herman, Kennedy, Maloney, Clark, Fresolo, Lyon, Heywood, Doherty, and Betts. William Mitchell, an outstanding player, received All-Scholastic Honors in many of the papers. Ben Jackson, Al Beaudoin, and George Greenidge got Honorable Mention. Also, these four plus Paul Girovard and Bennett McInnis made the All-Cambridge team. Coach Tom Smith quoted, “The seniors played a major role in this year’s team, which was the best team Rindge has had in the past twenty years.” TRACK 1959 (cont'd) The seniors of the Rindge Track Team would like to express their gratitude to Mr. Tom Duffy who, in their opinion, is the best coach in the past, present, and future years. Without his help they wouldn’‘t have a winning team which went undefeated during the entire Cross Country and Indoor season. So to you, Coach Tom Duffy, the entire Rindge Track Team says— “THANK YOU” ee ee at 4 a | CHAMPIONSHIP RELAY TEAM A. Jackman J. Brooks B. Grigsby L. A much better record was expected of the team as five lettermen from last year’s team were re- turning. One of the highlights of the past season was Rindge’s upset victory over strong Brockton, the team picked to win the Suburban League Crown. Coach Murphy is now looking forward to next year’s squad which should prove to be one of the better teams in the League. Seniors who have performed well this season were Al. Harrington, Ernie Kapopoulos, Paul Smith, and Jim Eisner. HOCKEY FRONT ROW, left to right: P. White, R. Dahl, Stanley, R. Beaudoin, W. Braun, R. Kendall, Captain; F. O’Connor, J. Tamsey. Wilband, B. Chebator. HOCKEY 1958-59 Our sextet this year had somewhat of a dismal season due to the fact that it was a young team with only a few seniors to anchor it. The result was obvious because of ‘the lack of experience. However, they were determined to do their best at every encounter and to try to make this a good season. Their hustle and aggressiveness in the last half of the season showed that these lads were not lacking in spirit. They stunned C.H.L.S. with their hustle, but unfortunately they were edged out with only fifty- one seconds remaining. They followed this up with their best game of the season on the following Saturday. They held mighty Melrose to a 1-0 count. The spirit displayed by our seniors on this come- back was undaunted. The following seniors led by Capt. Richard Kendall gave their best against overwhelming odds: Richard Kendall, Bennet McInnis, Ronald Beaudoin, James Tansey, Frederick O’Connor, Walter Braun, and Richard Parkhurst. These boys certainly wish Coach Kelley all the success they can for the coming year. It was his first year at this post and if what he has accomplished is a preview of the future, next year’s Rindge sextet will be very successful. The seniors also wish to thank the two managers, James McDermott and Robert Sousa, for a job well done. 73 74 RINDGE TRACK 1958-59 FRONT ROW, left to right: R. Heywood, A. Sullivan, K. Bentubo, J. THIRD ROW: Mr. Thomas J. Duffy, Coach, J. Goldsmith, S. Mascoll, J. Paterson. (Co-Captain Alan Jackman was ill.) TRACK 1959 The Metropolitan Track League season started January 3, 1959 for Coach Tom Duffy and his de- fending champions. The team looked good after winning its first meet against Medford with a score of 56 to 21. On the following week, January 10, Rindge ran against its greatest opponent, Newton. In the previous years, the winner of this meet always decided the championship. The score that day was 45 2 to 31 2, the winner... Rindge. On January 17, Rindge participated in the B.A.A. In this meet the relay quartet already labled “the best | ever had” by Tom Duffy, sped to a meet-clinching and record-breaking victory. With the team prize up for grab going into the relay, the record-breaking relay team raced to a 50-yard win in 2:23.8, demolishing the mark of 2:25.4 set by a Rindge team. On January 31, Rindge raced against Brookline who was the only other undefeated team in the league. Going into the relay, Rindge was leading by 1 point and Coach Duffy turned loose his winning relay team that outran Brookline and broke its own relay record. They set a new league record of 2:02.8. Final score was 42 to 35. Going into the state meet on February 7, track fans said it was impossible for Rindge to beat Newton. But going into the relay, Newton was heading Rindge by 1 point and that fabulous relay quartet raced to a victory and broke the relay record of 2:24.6. They set a new record of 2:23.6. Also Alan Jackman broke the old 600-yard record and set a new record of 1:14. The meet only produced two state champs—Alan Jackman in the 600 and Bruce Grigsby in the 1000. Other seniors that produced points in the meet were Leon Brathwai te in the 50-yard dash, George Greenidge in the 1000, Howie Stackhouse in the mile, and Robert Heywood in the high jump and the hurdles. Rindge was now the state champ of 1959. The last meet of the year was held on February 14, against Malden. Rindge clinched this meet which enabled them to bring home the trophy that named them the Metropolitan Champs of 1959. Kick-Off to our rivals. Rindge on the march. Our lads guarding our end. wa. ee a | A good try. 75 76 BASEBALL 1959 This year should be a very promising one, says Mr. Gibson, our baseball coach. With many let- fermen returning from the varsity and some promising junior varsity players coming up, the base- ball squad should distinguish itself as one of the best in the last five years. Seniors, John Maloney and Ernest Kapopulous will hold down the catchers and first base positions respectfully. The mound job will be shared by senior, David Kennedy, and junior, Thomas Gannon. David Ward, a senior letterman, and Harold Turcott should make the infield a solid factor for the team. Then other players from the junior varsity and freshmen will make up the rest of the team. Altogether it looks as though Rindge will finally be in the win column a number of times. EPILOGUE The chief aim of this yearbook of the class of 1959, has been to touch upon the high spots of our four years. In these pages we see familiar faces and familiar nicknames by which we will re- member each other, in our struggle in the years to come. It will help us to renew our contacts with a very enjoyable part of our life.
